A highly entertaining Soviet Red Western (Ostern) film from Soviet/Uzbek filmmaker Ali Hamroyev. The action takes place circa 1920 in Central Asia, at this time The Basmachi Movement, comprising a diversity of tribal Muslim nationalists, is waging a guerrilla campaign and embarking on conventional warfare, fiercely resisting the Soviet Red Armies advance into their sacred territory. Our hero, fearless and honorable is Soviet revolutionary Mirzo. Tasked with escorting prominent prisoner Sultan Nazar to the reginal center of Bukhara, Mirzo who is familiar with the harsh conditions and impossible terrain, leads his small group along precarious paths and steep mountain ridges, in ruthless pursuit are a cutthroat group of Basmachis intent on rescuing the Sultan.
Spectacular scenic landscapes, thrilling stunt action, wild gun blazing horse pursuits, a fascinating historical background and accompanied with a mod soundtrack typical of the late 70s era, Telokhranitel is an excellent action-adventure film. The story was written by the director Ali Khamraev, his earlier film 'The Seventh Bullet' also has a similar historical setting, although not quite as spectacular, the two films would benefit greatly from restoration, and both deserve wider recognition.
