Paula Weinstein, who produced dozens of films including The Perfect Storm and The Fabulous Baker Boys, exec produced Grace and Frankie, won Emmys for Truman and Recount and was a former studio and Tribeca Enterprises executive during a nearly 40-year career, died Monday morning. She was 78.
Her daughter Hannah Rosenberg told Deadline that Weinstein died peacefully at her home in New York. She was well-liked around Hollywood; condolences to her many friends in the industry.
“The world is a lesser place without my mother,” Rosenberg said in a statement to Deadline. “Paula was a lifelong activist and force of nature who was a champion for social justice and underdogs for more than half a century. She shattered barriers in Hollywood and always lifted other women along with her. I know my mother would want me say this: if you’d like to honor her, please stop what you are doing...

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

Bruce Willis burst onto the American entertainment scene as the glib, smart-alecky detective David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd’s Maddie Haynes in ABC’s Moonlighting, a show that helped launch the dramedy genre. If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Let’s Get Divorced; a Japanese Netflix series offers an unusually unsettling concept for a rom-com.
Taishi Shoji (Tori Matsuzaka) and famous television actress Yui (Riisa Naka) strive to reconcile when the former is seen in public with a young reporter, Sakurako (Lisa Oda).
However, their circumstances do not allow for a clean divorce, so various personal dramas and conflicting subplots conspire against the divorce throughout nine overlong episodes.

Every 10 years or so, Hollywood seems to fall head over heels in love with a writer. In the 1990s, studios couldn't stop turning John Grisham's legal drama/thriller novels into movies. Such was also the case with romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, starting with "Message in a Bottle" in 1999 and stretching on throughout the 2000s and a little beyond.
More recently, journalist and writer David Grann has quietly emerged as the hot new thing in Tinseltown. His book "Killers of the Flower Moon" is now a $200 million, three-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screen rights to his newest work, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder," were acquired by Scorsese and DiCaprio before it was even published. Recent years have also seen Grann's book "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon" and his New Yorker article...

The Beatles exist in a stratosphere all their own decades after they broke up. The music still resonates, and the band members — living and dead — are still celebrated. So are the group’s other projects, such as The Beatles’ first movie A Hard Day’s Night. It cost $500,000 to make, which was well worth it beyond the box office receipts. Paul McCartney said filming the movie was nerve-wracking, but it came with a huge payoff.

A Hard Day’s Night (1964) was like many other movies. A screenwriter (Alun Owen) penned the script. A director (Richard Lester) helmed the shoot. And actors (many of them anonymous in the U.S. aside from The Beatles) performed in it.
Yet it comes off as a quasi-documentary with Paul, John Lennon, George Harrison,...

It may feel like throuples are a distinctly modern romantic arrangement – but this couldn’t be further from the case.
In fact, consensual non-monogamy, such as a ménage à trois, goes back centuries. It can even be found in the bible.
Recently, David Haye has been the subject of speculation surrounding his private life, with fans claiming that the ex-boxer is in a three-way relationship with model Sian Osborne and The Saturdays singer Una Healy.
On Valentine’s Day, Haye appeared to confirm the rumours, with Healy also sharing a coy message on Instagram alluding to the relationship.
When it comes to depictions of polyamorous relationships in film and TV, good examples have traditionally been few and far between.
But that’s not to say there haven’t been any – from pre-code classics to modern indie dramas, there are plenty of films and TV series which place the spotlight on...

After coming up short against Allison Janney on her first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for 2017’s “Downsizing,” Hong Chau now has a second chance at a supporting victory thanks to her work in “The Whale.” Although she is far from the first woman to compete for the same SAG Award twice, she has broken new ground as the only person of both Asian birth and descent to receive multiple solo film acting nominations from the guild. If she prevails, she will follow Yuh-Jung Youn (2020’s “Minari”) as only the second Asian winner of any individual film SAG Award.
Along with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who earned her first SAG Award notice for 1994’s “True Lies,” Chau is one of two returning supporting nominees in this year’s lineup. Also vying for the prize is Curtis’ co-star, Stephanie Hsu, a past TV ensemble winner for...

In the two dozen years since she received her first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, Cate Blanchett has become one of the most-recognized performers in the organization’s history. With her 2023 lead notice for “Tar,” she ties Meryl Streep’s record for most film SAG Award bids. If she prevails on her 18th general nomination, she will follow Daniel Day-Lewis, Renée Zellweger, and Viola Davis as only the fourth person to ever take home three SAG trophies for individual film acting.
On her fifth Best Film Actress outing, Blanchett faces three category newcomers and one heavily-feted veteran. The one whose SAG Awards resume most closely rivals hers is Davis, who is seeking her third win here for “The Woman King” following victories for “The Help” (2012) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021). The other three categories she has conquered are Best Film Ensemble (“The Help”), Best TV Drama Actress, and Best Film Supporting Actress.

George Harrison and Terry Gilliam met before Harrison founded HandMade Films, but they soon worked together on a movie for the production company. They did not have a smooth working experience, due mostly to the fact that they had different ideas for the direction of the film. While Harrison tried to be understanding of Gilliam’s creative vision, he eventually reached a breaking point. He lightly insulted Gilliam, and Gilliam said it made him proud.

At the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 2007, Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) made history as the first Black winner in the supporting actress category. In the time since, five of the 11 other Black women who have vied for the same award have succeeded. Ruby Dee (“American Gangster”) prevailed the very next year and was followed by Mo’Nique (2009’s “Precious”), Octavia Spencer (2011’s “The Help”), Lupita Nyong’o (2013’s “12 Years a Slave”) and Viola Davis (2016’s “Fences”). Now, having landed a nomination for her role in “Passing,” Ruth Negga could become the lucky seventh member of this group.
Negga faces Caitríona Balfe (“Belfast”), Cate Blanchett (“Nightmare Alley”), Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) and Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”). Balfe, who is also up in ensemble for “Belfast,” and DeBose stand with Negga in forming the lineup’s SAG newcomer majority. Blanchett, also an ensemble contender for “Don’t Look Up,...

Over the 27 years of Screen Actors Guild Awards history, no other performer has earned more nominations in the supporting actress category than Cate Blanchett. She made history this year with a fifth bid in this category for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” stealing scene after scene as Dr. Lilith Ritter, a manipulative psychologist with hidden motives.
Blanchett is far and away the veteran in the category this year, which features three first-time nominees and one past winner. Caitríona Balfe scored two bids in supporting and in ensemble for “Belfast,” while Ariana DeBose and Ruth Negga also landed their first citations for “West Side Story” and “Passing,” respectively. Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”) rounds out the category, having previously won as an ensemble member of “Hidden Figures.”

In the quarter century since he was first nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for his supporting turn in 1995’s “Othello,” Kenneth Branagh has added a dozen feature films to his directing resume. Now, for the first time, he has succeeded in guiding other performers to SAG Awards nominations. The cast of his autobiographical film “Belfast” have collectively received a bid for ensemble, and one of its featured players, Caitríona Balfe, is in the running for an individual prize.
Balfe’s challengers in this year’s supporting actress contest are Cate Blanchett (“Nightmare Alley”), Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”) and Ruth Negga (“Passing”). Like Balfe, DeBose and Negga are also SAG newcomers, while Dunst won as part of the ensemble cast of “Hidden Figures” five years ago. After Cate Blanchett won her first Screen Actors Guild Award as an ensemble member in “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, it took her another 10 years to conquer the remaining two film acting categories. She garnered a supporting actress win for “The Aviator” in 2005 and then a lead actress victory for “Blue Jasmine” in 2014. Now, with her performance in the miniseries “Mrs. America,” she is looking to follow in the footsteps of Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, and Allison Janney by earning a trophy in a fourth category.

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Spike and Mike are credited with investing in a market where one didn’t exist and without them it’s quite possible we’d never have the likes of The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation was born when two concert promotors from Riverside, California: Craig “Spike” Decker and Mike Gribble, who started showing cartoons between acts. Originally sourcing from smaller distributors, college campuses, and the National Film Board of Canada, they grew their brand to compete with others and found their niche with their Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation. Originally a touring show that started in non-traditional venues on college campuses, the tour grew to include independent cinemas. That’s where I discovered it–on our annual family trip to Disney. Although intended for audience members 18 and older,...
