There are two remarkable women at the heart of Philip Dawkins’ new play “Charm,” which opened Monday at McC’s Off Broadway Lucille Lortel Theatre. One is Miss Gloria Allen, a 73-year-old retired nurse and transgender woman who rose to new prominence several years ago by teaching an etiquette class to youth at an Lgbtq center in inner-city Chicago. She inspired Dawkins’ lead character, here dubbed Mama Darleena Andrews, who has been “living my truth since I was 19.” The second is Sandra Caldwell, a veteran actress with recurring and guest roles on shows like “Soul Food” and “Law & Order Svu,...

Let no one accuse Oprah Winfrey of letting her Own channel become the unofficial Tyler Perry network. Now comes word that Own is developing "Tulsa" (working title), a two-night miniseries set to star Oscar winner Octavia Spencer ("The Help"). The miniseries will tell the story of the largest race riot in U.S. history, during which 300 people are believed to have been murdered. With Spencer's name above the title, we can't help but think this is sure to be Emmy Awards bait. Describing this as "a story that was largely covered up for decades," Own says that Spencer will be playing the role of Mattie Clay, a journalist who moves back to Tulsa after a stint in Chicago where she must "face the demons of her past and decide where her future lies." The miniseries will be executive produced by Nancy Miller ("Saving Grace"), and co-executive producers are Valerie Woods...

Revolution is getting a makeover, but things are only getting dirtier — in every sense of the word.
When the NBC drama returns for Season 2 on Wednesday at 8/7c, the characters will find themselves in dark (power’s out again, sorry), desperate (Rachel’s lost it, yikes) and grimy (hello, underworld) situations. But instead of trying to turn the lights back on, their mission shifts to battling a new, so-called patriotic enemy, executive producer Eric Kripke tells TVLine.
And there’s even more change ahead: With the Matheson clan splintered, Charlie takes off on her own — and gets a bit of a personality makeover!

The biggest takeaway from 1982, writer-director Tommy Oliver’s debut feature film, is that Hill Harper should simply be getting more roles. With a decades-spanning career that includes recurring television parts on the now defunct CSI: NY and Soul Food, the 47-year-old actor and writer has had the fate of many a black actor in Hollywood: steady work, yes, but with few opportunities for roles that appropriately show off his movie star potential. With 1982, that potential is on full display as Harper plays Timothy, a man struggling to raise his young daughter Maya (wonderful newcomer Troi Zee) in the midst of his wife Shenae’s (Sharon Leal) growing drug habit. But it's not like he hasn't been in the movies, too, having made appearances in "Brown Sugar" and the fourth installment of the "Resident Evil" franchise, "Afterlife," back in 2010. He made it through that film, and considering that he said director Paul W.S. Marlon Brando is so seared in our minds as Stanley Kowalski from "Streetcar Named Desire" that it takes an actor with true presence, a raw intensity and not a little bit of swagger to play him without comparisons to Brando popping up constantly.
Blair Underwood has all of that, and so very much more in the superior production of Tennessee Williams' masterpiece at the Broadhurst Theatre. The play does not have the happier Hollywood ending the 1951 movie has, and that wasn't exactly a day brightener.
Emily Mann's direction reveals Williams' rougher, grittier and far grimmer play. And it is glorious. You will feel as if you need to sit in a dark room and decompress for a while after. Twelve hours after leaving the nearly two-and-a-half hour production, I still feel this way. But if you are very lucky, you will see this limited run.

TV Line is reporting that Rockmond Dunbar will be returning to Bet's The Game for a 6-8 episode arc in its upcoming fifth season. Dunbar, currently portraying new Charming sheriff Eli Roosevelt on Sons of Anarchy, will be reprising his role as Pookie, who he played in a season three episode.
The Game returned to television last January nearly two years after being canceled by The CW. The show, which found a foothold on Bet with its well-rated reruns, then exploded in popularity, arguably launching Bet's current scripted boom. The network recently debuted Reed Between the Lines, a sitcom featuring Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends) and Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show), and will be premiering the next seasons of The Game and Let's Stay Together in January.
Dunbar, most known for his leading role in Showtime's Soul Food, has appeared in the likes of Terriers, Prison Break, and Heartland.

Following news earlier this month that Lifetime would be crafting a version of Steel Magnolias with an all-black cast, it looks like another predominately black project is getting off the ground.
According to FishbowlLA, Twentieth Century Fox has expressed interest in reviving Soul Food, the former Showtime series based on the 1997 film of the same name. There's been no word on any potential casting or what network the series is being targeted for, but Twentieth Century is said to be looking to "revamp the series for a new generation".
Although I think Bet makes a lot of sense as a possible network home for the show, considering its success with scripted shows recently (The Game, Reed Between the Lines, Let's Stay Together), I'd love to see a drama like this get a fighting chance on one of the Big Four. Yes, there'd be higher expectations and a smaller margin for error,...

Maria Maggenti's 1995 film about teenage love is a romantic comedy of a different kind. Written in eight days and shot in 21, The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love is a standard lesbian rite-of-passage movie that is a favorite among many gay women, especially those who came of age in the mid-'90s.
So whatever happened to the women of The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love?

After playing Tina Kennard on The L Word, Laurel appeared on an episode of Castle and in the teen series Gigantic. She's currently focused on painting and recently filed for divorce from her husband of nine years.

WWE fans, another WWE Superstar will be lending their talent to a Syfy show. Joining the ranks of Cody Rhodes who guest starred on Warehouse 13 this past fall, Edge aka Adam Copeland will be guest starring on Syfy’s Haven in its upcoming new season this summer.
This won’t be Copeland’s first involvement with the sci-fi/fantasy genre. He had a small part in Highlander: Endgame in 2000 and will also guest star in the final episode of the third season of Amanda Tapping‘s Sanctuary.
In Haven, Edge will play Dwight Hendrickson, “a shrewd, longtime Haven resident” with connections to Nathan’s late father and Haven’s ‘troubled’ past. Check out the full press release below:

It's a good time to be a wrestler on TV these days, or at least on one of Universal's affiliate networks.
Just one day after we learned that massive WWE superstar The Big Show would join Michael Westen and co. for an episode of Burn Notice, now SyFy reports that retired four-time WWE championship winner Edge will join the cast of Haven in a guest role.
Edge, real name Adam Joseph Copeland, will take the role of Dwight Henrickson, a longtime resident of the supernatural Haven and former partner to Nathan Wuornos' Sheriff father. As Nathan takes the position for season two, he finds himself in need of Dwight's help as well.
Other guest stars for Haven's second season premiering on SyFy July 15th include Vinessa Antoine (Being Erica, Soul Food) and former 90210 star Jason Priestly, who will direct one of a four-episode arc he appears in.

I thought we’d covered this film previously on this site, but a search revealed that we most certainly have not, so here it is, along with news that it will be released in theaters this May.
The gist of it…
It’s called 35 And Ticking, an ensemble romantic comedy written and directed by Russ Parr, and starring Nicole Ari Parker, Tamala Jones, Kevin Hart, Keith Robinson, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Meagan Good, Mike Epps and Clifton Powell.
Plot? Victoria (Tamala Jones), Zenobia (Nicole Ari Parker), Cleavon (Kevin Hart), and Phil (Keith Robinson), 4 friends approaching the age of 35, are all struggling to build the families they’ve always dreamed of. While Zenobia is still looking for a man, Victoria is married to a man who doesn’t want children. Clevon, meanwhile, is too geeky to get a woman, and Phil is already married with children, but his wife is not very interested in being a mother.

Update: I’ll repost this as new titles are added to the list…
Compared to recent years, 2011 is shaping up to be one of the better years for black cinema, or blacks in cinema, in terms of both volume and variety.
With For Colored Girls now mostly behind us, I’d like to look ahead to what we can expect to see in theaters in 2011.
I did a bit of research, and these are the titles I came up with, all (or most) of which I expect we will see in 2011. Feel free to add any you know of that I didn’t include. I should note that I’m only counting films in which the characters that black actors play are central to the film’s plot, or films directed by black filmmakers, regardless of whether the cast is comprised of black actors or not.
First, on the indie front,...

[1] TriStar Pictures has released a new trailer for Jumping the Broom, starring Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Paula Patton (Just Wright, Precious) and Laz Alonso (Avatar). The film revolves around the wedding of Sabrina (Patton) and Jason (Alonso), and the clash that ensues when her uptown family meets his downtown one. This is the first feature by director Salim Akil, a television director whose credits include The Game, Girlfriends and Soul Food. While Jumping the Broom is unlikely to convert romcom haters, it looks like an enjoyably fluffy flick for everyone else. Check out the trailer after the jump. [via TheMovieBox.Net [2]] Now that's what I'm talking about. Romantic comedies have a tendency to be predictable, for better or for worse. Jumping the Broom looks like it sticks to the formula -- big stars, hijinks, a recycled premise. The difference is that unlike in, say, Something Borrowed [3], the formula actually seems to work in Jumping the Broom.

Actor Boris Kodjoe is facing a hefty tax bill in the U.S. over allegations he owes more than $230,000. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials have filed three separate liens in Los Angeles against the "Undercovers" star for unpaid income taxes.
A $110,202 request was filed in 2008, an $82,745 demand was submitted in 2009 and the most recent in July for $37,497, according to The Detroit News.
Professionally, Kodjoe got his big break on "Undercovers". Before that he was not the lead star on TV series like "Soul Food" and movies "Resident Evil: Afterlife" and "Surrogates". In "Undercovers", he plays one-half of a married and retired spy couple who is thrust back into the world of espionage after one of their former colleagues went missing. The show is airing every Wednesday at 8/7c on NBC.

If J.J. Abrams sought to find the perfect leading man for NBC's new spy show, "Undercovers," he couldn't have done better than Boris Kodjoe. He's dangerously handsome, internationally traveled and he can definitely embody a reinvention of the super spy role.
"Steven is a fun guy, he doesn't take himself too seriously," Kodjoe tells Zap2it. "I think that's a new element when you talk about a leading man, somebody who's supposed to be a super spy. So, you can probably picture Steven as a James Bond with a lighthearted side to him."
Kodjoe, who most viewers will remember from his tenure on Showtime's "Soul Food," was born in Austria to a German mother and West African father. Still a German citizen, the leading man speaks two languages other than German and English. He also speaks French and Spanish.
