The actual true story is more interesting to Read.
Skunda1 September 2009
I found this movie lacking and above all sad. It has all the necessary elements(like the darkness and crazy teens)for a decent movie but if the SCREENPLAY is as bad as it was, then this movie is just a bunch of hot boys and girls talking to each other in scenes that last longer than my mind can keep up.

In a nutshell...screenplay bad, scenes to long that end up coming back to bore you again...Not watchable. Do Not Recommend.

By the way, I blame the bad acting on the directors and producers because I know Drew Fuller to be a decent actor. I do however recommend to read an article of the true story...far more interesting.

Reminds me of an experience in fiction writing class
tcdarkness12 June 2003
The people producing this film fell for the same fallacy that one of the students in the class did. He insisted that a couple of the stories he wrote in the vein of, "I realized that such-and-such is a true because this happened." He insisted that the story didn't need modification simply because it was true. Problem was, he forgot about a few things like effective story telling and sticking with just the significant facts. And the need to embellish a little is always a good thing.

This film suffers from the same problems. The back of the DVD says that the plot is all the more chilling because it is real. Well, being real is not scary. Most good horror films are scary because they are real. And if based on real life, they are scary because they are well-written and directed to convey a mood where even if you know the real story, you are unsure what will happen next and fear for the characters.

The biggest problem with the story telling is that the story of the clan begins at the end of the journey--with the kids being arrested in New Orleans for the murder of a Eustis, FL couple. THEN they all sit down one-by-one and tell the tale of how they got to be in 'Nawlins. The problem is, at this point we already know what is going to happen: parents get killed and kids get arrested in New Orleans! End of plot! Somehow the actual traveling seemed to take up a big portion of the run time but we already know where they are headed before they even take the trip.

The film has some good, young talent in the supporting roles (there is no real lead except for the one daughter of the parents who are murdered who goes on the journey). For some reason, all the young actors seemed to out-shine the older ones (especially the laughably bad-acting police officers). The casting of these roles was right on cue. Most people look like they did in real life except for the Rod character, who if you look him up on the Florida Dept. of Corrections site does NOT look like a hearthrob like he was in this movie. The kid with the glasses was eerily doppleganger-like.

The very opening of the movie is very reminiscent of Scream 1's opening scene with a girl realizing she may not be alone while talking on the phone. The shot setups look alike too. The bad-acting cop who shows up and tries to be the scare-factor in the scene makes the film more of a comedy than a thriller.

There is some decent amount of blood in the film. The killing of the parents is on-camera but out of frame (not necessarily a bad thing). We do get to see some bloodied, bludgeoned bodies which is always good (I think). The music is pretty fitting as well but it is cranked up too high at parts and you can't hear parts of the dialogue. And that is not because it is diagetic music.

Like the whole arrest at the beginning of the movie, putting off the murders for as long as the creators did makes it far less dramatic. The kids actually flash back to the murder scene but skip showing it on camera until the end. Why?! There's no revelation. It's just pointless to add it at the point and not put it in chronologically.

In the end, the writing is the biggest thing keeping this film down. Some B-grade actors as cops and complete lack of suspense build-up in direction doesn't help either. 3/10

Incorrect
xanarchyangelx-112 April 2006
The story of the Vampire Clan is a great story. But the movie, did not do the story justice. Personally I like the movie to a point, but so much of it was incorrect.

1.Rod had long black hair, not short.

2.Dana was overweight, not Charity.

3.Scott Anderson never psyched out during the murders, he somewhat enjoyed himself.

4.Dana was not the one who called for help at the hotel, Charity did.

5.Jeni did not come get Heather after the questioning. In fact Heather was put on trial like the rest, but was proved innocent. And even after her innocence was proved, her family still blamed her for the murders.

An accurate depiction, more or less.
nickthewright9 March 2004
I followed the "Vampire Clan" murder story through the years, mainly because I was the same age as the teens involved in the case and also played roleplaying games like Vampire: The Masquerade. I never believed I was a real vampire or got into actual bloodsucking, cutting or what have you, but still, the case struck close to home.

As a result I can attest that this movie has done a very good job of presenting the facts of the case in reasonable detail, right down to Jennifer Wendorf's red Saturn convertible. The most obvious changes were in the characterization, which someone probably thought would make the story flow better.

Missing was Rod Ferrell's massive mane of black hair, as well as Scott's somewhat less intrusive chin-length cut. They were given standard short haircuts, which kind of detracts from the weirdness of the original case. The characters of Charity Keesee and Dana Cooper should have been played by opposite actors. The actual Dana was overweight, which could have been pulled off more easily by the round-faced Alex Breckenridge. Marina Black looks absolutely nothing like Dana Cooper (who had short, curly hair at the time,) but wouldn't have been a far cry from Charity.

As far as the personalities go, there was no indication that Scott Anderson was a fidgety, shifty, nutball-type character. He had a hellish upbringing but was normally seen as calm and collected and was mostly a good student. Rod's characterization was reasonable, but I saw Charity as a less demonic force than the movie portrayed her as. She was a generally cheery girl who was grossly misled by her love of Rod, and she took the news of the deaths pretty hard. When it came down to it, she was one of the first to break down, and it was in fact Charity that made the call to her mother, not Dana.

I found it a bit ludicrous that they showed the Lake County Sherriff (who of course wasn't actually present at the questioning in Baton Rouge) just letting Heather go after hearing her story. In real life, Heather spent several months in jail waiting on the authorities to make up their minds before they finally decided to clear her of the charges. And Jennifer and Heather had bad blood between them in the interim due to some of Jennifer's comments to the media and Heather's responses. I highly doubt that they embraced like that when they reunited.

There was also a lot more dirt on Heather that never made it to the DVD. She just barely escaped charges, and there is still some question as to how much she actually had to do with the murders. Also, I wonder how long it took for somebody to come by and swipe the pearls she left on her mother's grave.

Another IMDB user had a good point in that they missed out on some interesting plot by not involving Rod's mother Sondra Gibson in the movie. There were aspects of that mother-son relationship that would have gone far to enhance Rod's insane image. They also ignored the entire role-playing issue, but it might have been better that they did. It's not that the game makes people insane, it's that Rod was already insane to begin with, but not everyone understands that.

All in all, though, the movie was well-done, although I think it's been grossly miscategorized. This is a True Crime story, and people looking for a good Horror flick are doubtlessly going to be disappointed. Yet, that's where you'll always find the movie, mainly because it has the word "Vampire" in the title.

Biggest Waste of Time Ever!
fthurston-2942427 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
OK so this film is, how should I put it nicely? Um- The Biggest pile of crap ever!!!!

OK so I came into this film because I had never seen Drew Fuller in anything aside from Charmed before. I was so excited for it too. Popcorn at the ready I sat with anticipation to see... nothing good!

I kept thinking to myself; It'll get better, It'll get better and yet, it just never did!

And what makes it worse is that they had the POTENTIAL to make it SO much better! When Drew Fullers Character started talking about everyone being a family and (something like) going down to hell/Taking over the world, they really could have just cut out the crap and skipped straight to them actually doing that.

I know, I know (before anyone bites my head off) that this was based on a true story and you have to keep the storyline the same, so OK fine, they so-to-say did that. But seriously it was just terrible!

MY ADVICE: If you want to see Drew Fuller, watch a Charmed episode he's in. Because this... simply put, is a waste of nearly 2 hours!

Not good.

Warning: Spoilers
Vampire Clan while based on real events, is unfortunately pretentious rambling nonsense and awful.

These girls situations are understandable, somebody wants them and they wanna take a chance. The guys are just nutjobs though. It's like a part one of a plot, except they're doing life in prison. Heather's plight's the only part to ever engage.

do not rent this movie
sulu_9915 February 2003
I like vampire movies, even a lot of the bad ones. But not Vampire Clan. Vampire Clan is bad. The plot was simply not engaging, dragging on and on. The acting was silly and the main character was just goofy (but maybe that's how goth kids really are, i don't know.) The dialogue was okay considering it had to fill minutes and minutes of nothing happening. This movie succeeded on no level. Some vampire movies are so bad they're good right? "Queen of the Damned" is completely stupid, but it's not a total loss as you can make fun of it every step of the way. Not Vampire Clan. The only thing this movie gives you is the feeling of what it's like to live forever, and not in a good way. So don't rent this movie. Look away. run.

Poor Script, Poor Actors, Poor Movie
QReyes3 March 2004
I'm not sure who to blame in this movie. Could it be the actors? No? Then maybe it's the script writers. Or it could be both. One thing I know is, even if the script are so poorly written, a good actor would be able to portray his role well. I saw so many plot holes and I think they could have thunk a better title for this movie. Vampire Clan? Please, they're not even vampires. They're wannabes. I think they choose this title as to attract fans of the horror genre. But even if you fancy thriller or horror movies, I don't think you'll even like this one. There's nothing horrifying about this movie. Heck, IMDb didn't even bother putting a genre for this movie (as of this writing).

Wasted Opportunity
SpookGrrrl7 March 2006
I read somewhere that the acting in this movie made it worth watching, as did the depictions of the crime itself and the accurate representation of the real-life facts. May I state for the record that I would like to thrash the person who said this repeatedly about the face and neck.

I love a good true crime thriller, so I took a chance and got the DVD from Amazon; I had already read Aphrodite Jones' account of the case in her novel "The Embrace" and was clamoring for something a little mo' better. I'll be trading in this DVD as soon as possible to receive store credit at my local media outlet, and I'm kicking myself for wasting my money and time on this worthless piece of sensational trash. Seriously--there is nothing redeeming or worthwhile about "Vampire Clan," and I would strongly urge anyone even remotely curious to steer clear. The worst of it is that the story had potential; the sordid tale of Rod Ferrell and his blood-drinking, spell casting, Masquerade-playing groupies is just crazy enough to be the subject of a great movie. John Webb and Aaron Pope killed anything good about it, unfortunately. The flashback to the scene at the Vampire Hotel is unnecessary and stupid in light of the fact that it's the only reference to anything that happened before Rod and his lackeys showed up in Eustis, Florida (well, that and an unexplained bit about Jaden Murphy). Every other line of dialog between every character in this entire film is forced and unrealistic. I LAUGHED at the supposed accurate portrayal of the crime scene. I've seen scarier blood and gore in the worst B horror movies ever made. David Wells--portraying Rick Wendorf--looked less like a murder victim and more like a man who had indulged in some bizarre ritual with a jar of strawberry jelly. Drew Fuller, despite being exceedingly easy on the eyes, sucks worse than a Hoover vacuum with a giant hairball stuck in the hose. He is not a convincing Rod Ferrell. His desperate attempts to come across as an evil bloodthirsty murderer are just plain goofy. Ditto that for Timothy Lee DePriest, who was SUPPOSED to be goofy (Scott Anderson was nothing if not a big dork trying to emulate his hero, Rod) and made me want to smack HIM with the tire iron--please don't anyone ever hire this guy to act in anything ever again, not even a toothpaste commercial.

To summarize...I dislike Kevin Costner movies, and yet I would rather have my eyelids duct-taped to my forehead and be forced to watch "Waterworld," "The Postman" and "Wyatt Earp" back-to-back than sit through another viewing of "Vampire Clan."

Violent and Weird Drama Based on a True Story
claudio_carvalho30 April 2005
In 1996, in Eustis, Florida, the parents of two girls are found brutally murdered at their home by the oldest daughter, Jeni Wendorf (Stacy Hogue), and the other one, Heather Ann Wendorf (Kelly Krueger), is missing. A further investigation discloses to the police that a group of Gothic deranged teenagers that worships vampires were responsible for the slaughter of the Wendorf family. The former boyfriend of Heather and also very evil and sick Roderick Justin Farrell (Drew Fuller), the leader, has killed Rick and Ruth Wendorf trying to open the gates of hell for him.

"Vampire Clan" is a violent and weird drama, based on a true story, having a well developed screenplay and characters and an excellent soundtrack. The low user rating of this movie is caused by the wrong idea of the genre that the title gives to the viewer. My family and I were expecting to see a horror movie, but it is indeed a drama. Even the genre in IMDb need to be corrected. Therefore, the target viewer is not reached, and persons that expect to see a horror movie becomes frustrated. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "O Clã dos Vampiros" ("The Vampire Clan")

This movie sucked massive culo
artstar041 January 2005
Alright. SO it sounded good. It started to look good, while we watched it it seemed good and then it ended. It ended and the story didn't even really start. So i guess the massive problem with this movie is that of Terror Toons... the camera lense was off and the sound was on. Who in their right minds would read the script for this movie and say "oh gosh! I love it!" and then have the balls to go and actually film it?!?!? This movie sucked. Stay AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!! IF you see this in the video store and say that it looks interesting run... run before its toooooooo late! GO NOW! Don't SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its not worth your time or your money. even if its free to rent... don't GET THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT SUCKED MASSIVE CULO!!!!!!

Surprisingly good
Mercury-428 February 2003
I don't know what I expected with this one, probably a cheap low-budget exploitation horror movie with a lot of gore.

I was very surprised and liked this. It is somewhat documentary in feel, but overall I thought the story flowed well. I found the mini-cult very believable and watching these people slip into it was fascinating to me.

Not the best...but not the worst...
PinkMascara29 March 2006
I had spent months trying to find a copy of this film, only to find that it was no longer in production, only three years after it's release. Little did I know, that my friend had a copy that she purchased for 99p! (With an Arnold Schwarzenegger film...)

The film tells the story of Rod Ferrell, a Gothic teenager convinced that he is a vampire. Although the film is not correct in details about the characters - e.g. Rod's long hair and Dana's short hair - it's not a complete let down. Admittedly, I have seen better films, but there have been worse at the same time.

The gory aspects of the film, such as the corpses of Heather and Jeni's parents, were very good, as was some of the make-up. However, I think that casting could have been better, as I found some of the actors a bit tedious to watch for seventy minutes, despite how nice Drew Fuller looked wearing eyeliner.

Horrible!
so_sue_me_2 July 2006
This is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. While it has a bit of entertainment value if you're sick and twisted, (like most of my friends,) the acting is terrible, the story is boring, and the teenagers are obnoxious.

My impression of the kids: "We're vampires! Really! We drink blood and everything! Aren't we creepy?"

I routinely use this movie as my example of the worst movie ever made and entreat people to refrain from seeing it, even if their lives depended on it. (Jokes, of course, but this movie is quite a waste of time.) Don't ever see it, please. I beg you.

A disappointingly dull movie
riftwolf13 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I got this in a 2 disc set with 'Hercules in New York', and it spent 4 years gathering dust before I finally sat and watched this. I should have guessed that the B movie to Hercules wouldn't be worth the time.

To be fair, the production and acting aren't bad. It's on par with a made-for-TV movie, the main characters played their parts well and I understood what was going on, so I went into this movie open-minded. The main problem with the film is there's not enough story to last the length of a feature length movie. The murder and apprehension are covered in the first ten minutes, then the rest of it is boring retread as we go over a lot of unnecessary detail. We start off with Rod confessing to the murder, then going over the details of what led up to the murder in a police interview. A lot of other minor details are revealed over the course of the movie, but it's boring because we already know the ending. I repeatedly checked the run time during this to see how much longer this was going to go. I think the movie would have held my interest if it hadn't been told in flashback. It robs the movie of all immediacy and basically tells you 'Here's the story in ten minutes, now sit on your hands while we drag this out'. Obviously because this based on a true story you weren't going to get a twist ending, so it's just dull.

I'm not giving this lower than a 3 because it was competently shot, well acted and well produced. But the nothing of a plot and tedious pacing drag this down from being an okay movie to a bad one for me.

Worst Movie ever
hallandrewe2 February 2005
I just rented this movie last night,And In my opinion Monkeys on typewriters could have done a MUCH better job. I am from Eustis Florida the place the murders took place, I actually knew Rod Ferrel very well before he moved to Kentucky. My first problem with the movie is, it wasn't even filmed anywhere near Eustis. Also Rod Ferrel was not a handsome short haired guy, he had long hair and in my opinion is very ugly, also he was like 10 times crazier than they made him seem on the movie, i mean the guy actually thought he was a Vampire how crazy is that. None of the actors in the movie where any good, and the story left out a lot of details, it seemed to me that they didn't do very good research about the crimes and rushed making it, I think the movie could have been much better and I'm VERY disappointed and would like my money back.

What movie?
lifebringer24 November 2002
I don't think this is a very popular movie, as I'd never heard anything about it. First of all, I wouldn't call this a movie. I'd call this a dramatization...sort of like if you go out and rent some videos of re-enactments of crime's or train wrecks or something. While the movie gets you into the story a little, it doesn't really have a timeline. You see what's happened, you see where it started, and then you see the details in between. But nobody really ever tells you Why?

The ...dramatization, if you will (since it states "based on actual events," albeit probably loosely...) starts with a girl coming home to find her parent's have been brutally murdered by her sister's new friends. The friends believe they are vampires. Now, I'm not spoiling anything for you as this all happens in the first five minutes, and honestly I think I could share the entire story in this review and I wouldn't spoil a moment.

The story behind the movie...itself is ok. We don't really see enough character development; I want to know more about WHY Rod believes he's a vampire and see THEIR world, an angle we aren't shown. Quite frankly, I think I could do a similar job if I got a few good camera's and a budget and me and my friends set out to make a film like this.

As for the acting...if this had great actors playing perfect parts, I think I could have given it a 7/10..the story and dialogue/screenplay hurt it a lot, but the acting tops the barrel off. While overall the teen's don't do that bad of a job, it's those rare moments that are shocking. You know when you watch outtakes of a movie where the actors crack up halfway into their line? Well, it's as if they kind of kept those cuts IN the final version of the film here...one scene comes to mind...when the father reacts to finding out his daughter skipped class that day. Overall, I just don't feel like I gained anything from this movie...I wish they had put some bizarre, frightening twist on the end..at least I'd do some research and inquire WHY the ending were so wierd, but the ending is as normal and drab as the rest of the film. (props to the opening pre-title though, that was nice.)

Well, it's 3am, sorry if this review was a little incoherant, blame it on my state of mind after watching this...Sorry, I give it a 5/10..hopefully others will find this more entertaining than I did...

Should be recommended for college psychology classes
nitewalkr13 March 2003
I Saw Vampire Clan and I'm very familiar with the story being that I live nearby where the incident took place. What I heard and read about this case the script writers followed the depositions and stories that were given by the teens almost to a "T". To me, all the actors pulled off their characters very well. A must see movie for anyone whose into the psychology. I give it an 8 out of 10.

disappointed
heroinchic26 January 2005
i've always been highly interested in true crime, especially cases concerning vampires and teens who kill. so before i ever knew of a film being made about rod and his crew of merry followers i had read almost everything there was to read about the case. so it was natural that i wanted the film to be as accurate as possible. so it is no surprise that i was bitterly disappointed. for one thing ROD FERRELL HAD LONG HAIR. casting drew fuller with his trendy messy short hair style was just PLAIN WRONG. if i was the casting director and i saw drew fuller come in to audition i would have been like "GET OUUUUUUUUT, ROD HAD LONG HAIR YOU STUPID LITTLE MUPPET, UNLESS YOU CAN GROW YOUR HAIR ABOUT 16 INCHES LONGER IN THE NEXT 5 SECONDS YOU'VE GOT NO CHANCE!!!!!". it actually made me angry. no disrespect to the actors in the film, but you got it all horribly wrong. all i can say that was good about it was that the girls were extremely pretty looking all Gothic. so to conclude... 3/10. it is reasonably watchable if you are a goth freak of some kind and care little about the actual case. if you know about the case then you'll be pretty bitter as was i

Could Have Been Much Better
Darkest_Rose28 January 2003
This movie caught my eye a few weeks ago, the cover especially appealed to me. It showed a girl biting her wrist and on the back it said that it was based on a true story. So I decided to give Vampire Clan a try. The movie wasn't bad, the acting was decent, the soundtrack was awesome. But the filming and the plot could have been much better, if some good people worked and it and gave it a little bit more effort, the movie could have been very good and it could have even come out on a theatrical release. Anyways, Vampire Clan is about a bunch of teenagers that think they are vampires and one night murder the parents of one of their friends. This actually happened sometime in 1996. It's nice to see a movie getting made on something realistic. I would give Vampire Clan 6/10

This movie rocks no matter what others say!
suicidaldragnfly9 August 2004
I loved this movie! Drew Fuller has become one of my favorite actors now, all of them have. It wasn't put out to become #1, it's based on a true story. If they had added more then what they did it probably WOULD have made #1, but then people would complain about how it wasn't accurate. What more do you want? The acting was like real teenagers are, and people like those 'vampires' DO exist. Believe what you want but I will continue to love this movie no matter what the ratings are and I urge everyone to see it. The music was good and the way they told what they knew was dead-on. I give this movie a 9/10. I do see why you don't like it, because you expected more. Seen with an open mind this movie rocks!

What a terrible movie!!!!!!!! The acting was bad! The story was so bizarre to begin with that to know it was real or "based on a true story" is so out there. This is one of those movies that you see and say "Man, I want my hour and a half back". Don't get me wrong, I LOVE vampire movies and the like, just not this one.

This is actually based on a true case
npacione30 July 2008
If you go into this knowing this isn't a vampire movie and based on a true crime you'll appreciate it. My ex-room mate got this one for a party she was throwing thinking it was a vampire movie, but I knew more about the case personally because when it happened I was working at College of DuPage.

The killer in the story tries to portray his reality as a vampire but he's just a disturbed individual himself. He leaves the teenager girl an orphan because of it -- and this also leads into how the author of the book would also end up writing the book based on the case.

One of those movies you'll enjoy if you know what really happened and what lead into the movie. It is a true story. The movie emerged when my own true crime outing, The Cabbie Homicide: October 13, 1993 was made live. When one examines the events of the crime then go into this movie, they're in for nightmare fuel when they realize this happened. Though the writers of the movie form took some liberties on how the murderer looked as he was making faces at the camera and had very long hair when they dragged him through the courtroom.
