Not a lot of books have trailers, but then again, not a lot of books are written by co-founders of independent film festivals. Dan Mirvish, one of Salmdance’s founding fathers, has penned “The Cheerful Subversive’s Guide to Independent Filmmaking” as a how-to for aspiring filmmakers. Check out the trailer below.

In an email to Indiewire, Mirvish describes his tome as a “non-fiction, comprehensive guide to the craft and culture of making indie films” that “also serves as something of an oral history of the last 25 years of Slamdance and our alumni (everyone from Chris Nolan, the Russo Bros and Rian Johnson, to Lynn Shelton and Benh Zeitlin). The book covers everything from financing and casting, to directing and festivals, to distribution and piracy — all from my particularly skewed perspective.”

The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Bahama Film Festival and has been honored at over 20 film festivals in 7 countries. This marks Mirvish's first time directing since 2004's comedy musical "Open House," although he has largely kept busy in the year's since making various short films and continuing to work with Slamdance. A co-founder in 1994 of the Slamdance Film Festival, Dan Mirvish is a busy director, screenwriter and producer. Labeled a “cheerful subversive” by The New York Times, and “Hollywood’s Bad Boy” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mirvish has made quite a name for himself in the world of Independent Film. He remains actively involved with Slamdance, frequently serving as master of ceremonies and mentor to the incoming crop of filmmakers each year. The festival has served as a launching pad for such filmmakers as Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception), Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity).
Most recently, Mirvish has directed the feature Between Us, based on the hit Off-Broadway play of the same name and starring Julia Styles, Taye Diggs, Melissa George, and David Harbour. Mirvish co-wrote the screen adaptation with original playwright Joe Hortua...

I was immediately dubious when I first heard about Kickstarter.com, a website where creative and entrepreneurial types can look for funding for their projects via a limited-time appeal to the masses. I've come to hate the expression "in this economy," but in this economy, I just didn't see many folks ponying up even a few bucks for the effective development of a film, music recording, or invention. And having spent a significant portion of my life looking for financing for creative endeavors... let's just say that it's a challenging process.
But this hardened cynic will eat his predictions on this one.
Although I'm sure there are plenty of examples of projects that don't get funded at all through Kickstarter, and other similar "crowd-funding" sites, a number of filmmakers have been having some real success with it,...

Julia Stiles, Taye Diggs, Melissa George and David Harbour are attached to star in Between Us, the Dan Mirvish-directed adaption of the Joe Hortua off-Broadway play about two couples who were friends in school and whose periodic meetings conjure up rivalries and bitterness over unrealized ambitions that get waylaid by money and children. The film will shoot in May. Mirvish is the co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival who directed Open House. Hortua and Mirvish wrote the script. They are producing with Hans Ritter, Barry Hennessey and Dana Altman. The play opened originally at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2004. ICM is packaging the film and reps the talent.
