You don't see many movies about cockfighting, so right away one is drawn into an unfamiliar world with interesting possibilities. Indeed, the first hour or so is mildly entertaining. But it loses it in the third act with unrealistic story twists, and the many technical gaffes throughout (such as film equipment reflections and wildly varying boy's hair length for a story taking place in the course of one day) are quite distracting. A good but flawed effort.

John Quartermous (Sonny) is a friend of mine that I've known for years. Having performed with him and seen him in several stage shows myself, I know that he is an excellent actor. He has a way of becoming whichever character he is portraying at the moment, whether it's an old Jewish man, Huckleberry Finn, or one of the fratricidal brothers in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, that never ceases to amaze me, and I've looked up to him since I was young. Though this film is not on of your high-budget blockbusters, it is worth it. John is one of many excellent performers who made the story of this movie much better than the final production as was seen.
