UK network ITV has posted Q1 revenues down 7%, as its studios division felt the impact of last year’s Hollywood labor strikes.
The commercial broadcaster’s total revenue was £887M ($1.1B), compared with £952M in 2023, with a recovery in the ad market offset by a 16% dip at ITV Studios.
The Media and Entertainment unit that houses its main network was up 2% at £505M, according to a trading update this morning. Earnings weren’t broken out.
Total revenue at ITV Studios, which makes the likes of Love Island and Mr Bates Vs the Post Office were £382M, down on the £457M in the same period last year.
According to ITV, this was “due to the phasing of deliveries which are heavily weighted to H2 and the expected impact from both the 2023 U.S. writers and actors strikes and the weaker demand from free-to-air broadcasters in Europe who have been holding back...

U.K. broadcaster ITV has reported mixed financial fortunes for the first quarter of 2024.
Its advertising revenue growth of 3%, with the second quarter expected to be up around 12%, is offset by the downturn in revenues from ITV Studios. Total revenue was down 7% to £887 million ($1.10 billion), between January and March, compared to £952 million ($1.18 billion) during the same period in 2023.
Within that total, ITV Studios revenues were down by 16% to £382 million (2023: £457 million), “due to the phasing of deliveries which are heavily weighted to H2 and the expected impact from both the 2023 U.S. writers and actors strikes and the weaker demand from free-to-air broadcasters in Europe who have been holding back spend until they see more certainty in the advertising market,” the broadcaster said.

Welcome to the island of St Jory, population: one less than there used to be.
A year ago, St Jory teenager Cai Prideaux went missing and the police did very little about it. Now there’s a new sheriff in town in Sgt Grace Narayan (Anjli Mohindra), an outsider with an unbending belief in the letter of the law that’s ruffling feathers among the locals. The islanders, you see, are used to running things their own way. The True Way.
That’s the Hot Fuzz-meets-The Wicker Man premise for The Red King, an original six-part series written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse and directed by Daniel O’Hara and Lisa Clarke. It’s a crime drama/folk horror mash-up that uses murder mystery trappings to tell a story about religion, insularity and national identity.
St Jory is your typical folk horror island in that there’s nothing typical about it.

Big ‘Dris himself joins us on the show this week, talking to Kay about Sonic spin-off Knuckles, which comes to Paramount+. Elsewhere, we’re back on the Baby Reindeer beat again this week, seeing as we made such a shambolic show of reviewing it on last episode, and now that everyone’s talking about it, we though it only fair to give it a proper viewing. Plus we revisit The Big Door Prize on Apple, and head off to hang out with the druids in The Red King on Alibi.

Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss has said he and the team behind the popular detective drama are still interested in adapting the series for the big screen.
Gatiss, who created the show with Steven Moffat, was quizzed on a Sherlock film adaptation last night by Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye on the green carpet at the 2024 Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
“We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult,” Gatiss told Deadline, adding that if you want a concrete answer on a film you’ll have to “you’ll have to ask Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman].”

Hurray for the Riff Raff dropped by CBS Mornings’ studio to perform three tracks from their new album The Past Is Still Alive for “Saturday Sessions.”
For the mini-concert, singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra — who uses they/them pronouns — delivered the first three songs from the recently released LP, “Alibi,” “Buffalo,” and “Hawkmoon,” accompanied by NNAMDÏ on bass.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Segarra broke down The Past Is Still Alive, an album informed by grief, like the death of Segarra’s father and, as on “Alibi,” a childhood friend who had become addicted to heroin.

Mark Gatiss will co-write and star in Bookish, a crime drama for Alibi, and here are the details of the new show.
It’s been several years since the last project by The League Of Gentlemen, and there is as of yet so sign of any further adventures for Sherlock. However, in the intervening years, Mark Gatiss has kept himself busy with a number of projects, from his annual Mr James Ghost Story For Christmas films, collaborating with Steven Moffat again on Dracula and directing Moffat’s debut play The Unfriend.
His next television project will be Bookish, a crime drama for Alibi he wrote with Matthew Sweet.
The synopsis reads as follows:
London, 1946 is the dynamic, dangerous and chaotic setting for this stylish new detective drama, with the eccentric Gabriel Book (Gatiss) at the very heart of the story: a self-appointed consultant detective to the local police. The thousands...

One week before Alynda Segarra’s father died, he mailed them a package. It was a box of all the music Segarra had sent him over the span of nearly 20 years, ever since they’d left their childhood home in the Bronx to travel the country. Everything they’d recorded, from burned CDs for street and jazz bands they’d played in, to records from Segarra’s own band of more than a decade, Hurray for the Riff Raff, was in there.

It’s been a decade of reinvention for Hurray for the Riff Raff, the recording moniker of singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra. After years of street-busking and self-releasing acoustic records, Segarra cemented their status as an old-timey roots standard-bearer on 2014 Small Town Heroes. But over the course of their past two albums–2017’s The Navigator and 2021’s Life On Earth–Segarra chipped away at that artistic identity by exploring other musical lineages (everything from alt-pop to punk to Nuyorican folk-poetry) while carving out a truer artistic self. Their new album, The Past Is Still Alive,...

“Alibi,” the opening track of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s The Past Is Still Alive, embraces the sense of invincibility that comes from facing down the very worst that life can throw at you. “You don’t have to die if you don’t wanna die/You can take it all back in the nick of time,” Alynda Segarra sings. The arrangement, featuring organ and bursts of tambourine, imbues the song with a sense of resilience and liberation—a relentlessly forward-moving spirit that recalls the music of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Waxahatchee.
The rest of The Past Is Still Alive is likewise informed by recollections of both a friend’s addiction and the passing of Segarra’s father, charting a determined, if sometimes uneasy, journey to make peace with uncomfortable truths. “Snake Plant” alternates between pleasantly mundane memories to direct addresses to a friend battling addiction (“I know...

There’s no shortage of brilliant detectives in novels, film and television, but one of the greatest — or at least the one with the fanciest facial hair — is Hercule Poirot. The Belgian investigator, created by Agatha Christie, has appeared 33 novels, more than 50 short stories, and has been played by a variety of iconic actors.
But for whatever reason, Poirot has only sporadically appeared on the big screen, with many of his earliest movie appearances being lost to time, while some of his other noteworthy adventures were rewritten as vehicles for Christie’s other beloved creation, Miss Marple.
Here we take a look at the various theatrically-released adventures of Hercule Poirot, from the 1930s to today, and see which of his mysteries were truly worth solving.

Mes enfants! A Haunting in Venice marks the third entry in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie movie series, finally giving us enough evidence to sift through in order to solve the present mystery: who is the best screen Hercule Poirot?
Taking into account appearance, accent, mannerisms, brilliance of mind, vanity, theatricality, humour, pathos, and of course the all-important moustache, here’s our ranking from most unfortunately disappointing version of the detective, to Poirot perfection.
A bit of housekeeping: only English-language screen Poirots have been included, so no radio, animated, international or videogame versions appear below, nor do bit-part sketch comedy Hercules. The nine actors in contention range almost a century in time, several inches in height, and vastly in their take on what makes a proper Poirot.

If you thought you'd seen the last of Hercule Poirot, think again. Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective, who has appeared in countless of her mystery novels, returns in "A Haunting in Venice," which is set to premiere on Sept. 15. The movie is based on Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party," which revolves around Poirot embroiled in another murder mystery. The original story takes place at a Halloween party, while the upcoming adaptation sees the detective at a séance.
"A Haunting in Venice" coproducer and director Kenneth Branagh is set to reprise his role as Poirot for the third time in the upcoming film. He first made his debut as Poirot in the star-studded 2017 film "Murder on the Orient Express." Five years later, he returned as Poirot in the 2022 movie "Death on the Nile," which also had a stacked cast. The third film in the Branagh trilogy will also feature huge stars...

There's one thing you can say about every single Academy Award nominee: whether they're good films or bad films, beloved or obscure, they are officially in the history books. Future movie lovers will read about them and, often, watch them out of either passionate interest or mild curiosity, decades later.
And that's a very good thing because a lot of the films that are nominated for the Oscars fall into obscurity pretty quickly. We may remember most of the Best Picture winners, for example, but what about the other films in contention? "Casablanca" won Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards and it's a film most people can quote directly, even if they've never watched it before. But there's a good chance that many of its fellow nominees that same year — films like "The Human Comedy," "The More the Merrier," and "Watch On the Rhine" — aren't nearly as well known today.

Bradley Cooper won’t get five Oscar nominations for “A Star Is Born” and Diane Warren may have to wait a little longer to get her 10th nomination and first victory. That’s because Warner Bros. has submitted three tracks from “A Star Is Born” for Best Original Song consideration, and none of them are penned by Cooper or Warren.
As posted on its Fyc site, the three tunes are “Shallow” (duh), “I’ll Never Love Again” and “Always Remember Us This Way.” All three are co-written by Lady Gaga. “Shallow” was also written by Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. “I’ll Never Love Again” counts Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey and Aaron Raitiere as its other songwriters. We’re far from the shallow now.
You know that song that’s been stuck in your head; the one that Lady Gaga belts out when Bradley Cooper brings her up on stage in the trailer for the upcoming musical drama “A Star Is Born?” It’s called “Shallow” and it just dropped.
Gaga premiered the earworm on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio on Thursday, in addition to releasing a much-anticipated video.
Most of the music on the soundtrack is original, written in part by Cooper and Gaga, who duet in “Shallow.” Cooper, who also directed the film, famously insisted that the music in the drama be recorded live. Gaga wrote “Shallow” with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando, and co-produced it with Benjamin Rice. It’s already drawing Oscar buzz.

Shameless gets political in the most shameless of ways. So in other words, it is befitting of our times!

Shameless Season 9 Episode 3
Last week, we considered just exactly what kind of patrons the Alibi has when, despite being on the South Side, there is apparently not one non-white person present on V’s day off—or even after knowing Frank Gallagher for decades they’d still put bread in his jar and actually believe they were funding a real political campaign. It would seem the Shameless writers embraced this paradox head on in the “Weirdo Gallagher Vortex,” suggesting the Gallaghers aren’t the only weird ones on the series’ version of Chi-town’s inner-city.

Tonight it makes more sense that the Alibi’s clientele would unanimously chant “Mo White” (and not be referring the pedophilic politician’s name either) when we discover the Alibi is...

On Aug. 30, Lady Gaga made an announcement that both delighted and disappointed us. When it comes to the fourth remake of the classic Hollywood tale A Star Is Born, we have official confirmation that there will be a soundtrack full of blissful bops. Given the fact that Gaga belts it out in the trailer, we're not surprised. The album is replete with an electrifying 34 tracks to accompany the release of the movie, and there's even a full tracklist to get you all amped up.
So what, you may ask, is the bad news? Unfortunately, we won't get to hear any of the music prior to the Oct. 5 release, as the soundtrack is set to drop on the same day. Then again, maybe it's a blessing; we can experience the magic of the music while we witness the moment on screen. If you like, you can preorder the soundtrack through whatever music service you use.
