I just caught bits and pieces of Last Comic Standing, the competition Dat Phan won to get this Comedy Central special, and from what I saw, I just didn't think Dat was the funniest person on there. My vote would have gone to Rich Vos, but that's just my opinion.

So as I'm watching this special, I'm trying to figure out how Dat won. I still didn't find his material too funny. I had a few chuckles like when he talks about his mom trying to set him up with an Asian girl and when he did his pregnancy test joke, but there weren't really any laugh-out-loud moments. I think he was voted in because he just seems likeable. That's about it. People feel they can relate to him, and he's slightly funny, and he wins!

This isn't to say I don't like Dat Phan; it's just that I've found other Comedy Central Presents comedians to be much funnier, like Dane Cook, Stephen Lynch, and Brian Regan. More power to Dat in his career, but I don't see him being a comic powerhouse.

My IMDb Rating: 6/10

eye watering hilarity

Warning: Spoilers
Dat Phan tells of his wacky mother, hilarious family scenarios, and the all too real effects of stereotyping. It was all hilarious, but I think the best part is when he impersonates a man with a heavy accent delivering some of the most terrible pick-up lines in all of history. It's good all the way through; any impersonation of his mom will make you laugh, she seems like a great lady.

He made my eyes tear and my stomach hurt with the pains of deep laughter. Totally worth your time(if you have a good sense of humor). It's something you can watch over and over again and still laugh.

Worth buying on iTunes... or just watch it online

Way, way funny

At first, I was wondering what this was all about. I mean a special has to last a lot longer than the few minutes they gave on the show, and the audience would be there for the entire time, so they would be hearing the material and all that. well, it's a lot harder to just tell the same five routines for more than 8 minutes, and even with music and an introduction, at least three times as much funny joke needs to be stretched out. Thank goodness for the notebook. After opening with the killer material from the Last Comic Standing, the notebook had different gags and quips that really brought the house down. I know the audience was held like puddy in my hands because they were too enraptured to talk or do anything other than sit there mouth open. It was a great show, and if you didn't see it, try to find it on tape on on the internet. It is something you will want to see time and time again.
