In an effort to increase diversity in movies and in its membership, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced changes in their eligibility criteria for two of its major film award categories, and removed a rule on how to become a member.
According to the update, films eligible for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer must show that they have worked to increase representation of minorities, women, people with disabilities, and from lower socio-economic groups in two of four areas: on-screen characters and themes; senior roles and crew; industry training and career progression; and audience access and appeal to under-represented audiences.
“[We believe] they are a flexible and achievable model, which the whole industry can adopt as a shared language for understanding diversity,” BAFTA said in a statement.

Last month the White House hosted the musical tribute “Bet Presents Love & Happiness: An Obama Celebration.” The event was televised on Tuesday, November 15 on Bet and served as a love letter to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
The celebration, which Dave Chappelle referenced in his “SNL” monologue and joked about Bradley Cooper being the only “white guy,” included performances from Jill Scott, Janelle Monaé, Common, Usher, Bell Biv DeVoe, The Roots, De La Soul, Yolanda Adams, Michelle Williams, Kierra Sheard, and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr.
Obama began the night by saying some words on how special the event was, “It’s with a little bit of bitter-sweetness that this is our final musical evening as president and First Lady.”
He then explained the history of holding live performances at the White House and described how Chester A. Arthur opened the doors to the all-black Fisk Jubilee Singers,...

Election Day came and went, and many Americans continue to be disappointed with the outcome. Still trying to cope with the final results and accept that Donald Trump is President-elect, Jennifer Lawrence penned an open letter for Vice’s Broadly on Thursday in response to his victory.
“Is this the stark reality? It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how qualified you are, at the end of the day, if you’re not a man? Is that what we just learned,” she begins. “This country was founded on immigration and today the only people that feel safe, that their rights are recognized and respected are white men.”

This year the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation branch has deemed eligible a record 70 animated shorts to vie for the shortlist of ten, followed by the final five nominations for the Oscar. That’s 10 more than last year’s 60.
The number of qualified shorts has been growing steadily, from 33 in 2010 to 58 in 2014.
Members of the branch who volunteer to serve will now view the shorts and rate the films. The ten best-rated shorts will go on the shortlist, to be revealed in November. A larger group will check those out and cull the final five which will be announced on Tuesday, January 24. The shorts will be sent to the entire Academy, who will vote on the winner.
Cartoon Brew got hold of the list of qualified contenders, and assesses what they consider to be the best of the best, including trailers. The Academy has not released that list.

The official submissions for the foreign language Oscar are in from around the world, and the Academy has deemed a record 85 eligible to compete. Last year, 81 submissions were released theatrically in their home countries between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015. (This year’s deadline for submissions was October 3, 2016.)
Several Academy foreign committees comprised of members from all the branches will whittle down the films to a shortlist of nine and finally, five Oscar nominees. (Last year’s winner was Cannes prize-winner “Son of Saul,” directed by Hungarian Lazlo Nemes.) Many countries pick films that do well on the festival circuit as their strongest Oscar contender; others do not.
Politics often intervene: Brazil’s submission was expected to be Cannes competition film “Aquarius,” starring Sonia Braga, but it was embroiled in controversy over filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s support of outgoing impeached president Dilma Rousseff.
