When Peter Billingsley's comedy "Couples Retreat" was released in 2009, some critics argued that the title should serve as a warning. It only garnered a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian saying that former Prime Minister of Cambodia, Pol Pot, could have written a warmer, funnier film.
The film follows four middle-aged couples on a retreat to a tropical resort called Eden where they mean to rekindle their respective flagging relationships. The couples are played by Vince Vaughn and Malin Åkerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. The cast was stacked, and the story interspersed run-of-the-mill midlife crises with limp attempts at slapstick. The film cost $60 million to make and netted $171 million worldwide, so it wasn't a bomb, but it also was dismissed and forgotten by the culture at large.

Do you know who has the Magyk?
Simone and Blue. Seriously, it's taken quite some time to lean into it overtly. But Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 6 delivered on the intern friendships blossoming, giving us that nostalgic feel of Og Magic with a fresh perspective.
In general, the installment had those shades of how the series used to be, especially with its balance on medical cases and doctors actually practicing and personal interactions.
One theme that has consistently carried over is the focus on mental health and the attempts to prevent doctors from burning out.
It's not just lip service, as it's a genuine issue that came to the forefront, forcing everyone to pay attention where they previously ignored it during the Covid pandemic.
The tables have turned a bit, with many people not pursuing the field fervently or dropping out of it. It has also prompted people to reevaluate how...

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have had their marriage under a microscope for some time. It seems the lack of time together is weighing heavily on the country singer, especially because Gwen recently ditched him to spend time with Jesus instead.
Gwen Stefani And Blake Shelton Have Packed Schedules
It’s common for Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s busy schedules to keep the husband and wife apart. Sometimes they are on opposite sides of the country, and other times, they are on opposite sides of the world. Maintaining a marriage and keeping it healthy is difficult, even for couples that spend time together daily.
However, this is extra difficult for a couple in the public eye like Blake and Gwen. Both of them show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Unfortunately, this often leads to them prioritizing career moves and advancements more than spending quality time together.

In June, the rural Tennessee town of Murfreesboro recently passed an ordinance banning LGBTQ couples from showing affection in public.
It sought to ban “indecent behavior,” which, according to Section 21-72 of the law, would include “indecent exposure, public indecency, lewd behavior, nudity or sexual conduct.”
In the section, it explicitly included homosexuality as a form of sexual conduct – effectively restricting public displays of affection for LGBTQ couples.
The city has now amended the bill to explicitly state that LGBTQ couples are exempt from these restrictions after a court blocked its implementation.
People caught violating the old law would have been barred from hosting public events or selling goods and services at such events for two years. A five-year ban would have been even more severe if the violation occured “in the presence of minors.”
In response, the ACLU of Tennessee filed a lawsuit against the city in early October.

Pope Francis has given formal approval for priests to bless same-sex couples, a significant shift in Vatican policy.
The new document, released by the Vatican’s doctrine office on Monday, expands on a letter previously sent by Pope Francis to two conservative cardinals in October. The document clarifies that blessings for same-sex couples can be offered under certain circumstances, as long as they do not confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage.
While it emphasizes that marriage remains a lifelong sacrament between a man and a woman, the document stresses that the blessings in question should be non-liturgical and distinct from civil unions. It advises against the use of specific wedding rituals, clothing or gestures.
However, the document asserts that requests for blessings from same-sex couples should not be categorically denied. It presents a broad interpretation of the term “blessing” in Scripture and argues that individuals who seek a...

Just when Holly's becoming likable, she'll do the most self-destructive thing ever -- and hurt her friends, too.
Neighbours spoilers for the week of 12-18-23 say that Holly's jealousy gets the better of her as Christmas approaches.
Not only does she do something impulsive and self-destructive this week, but she blames poor, sweet Trevor. Imagine stooping so low as to pin your bad behavior on the dog!
Until now, the worst part of this love triangle has been Mackenzie and Haz's inability to speak up and admit their feelings for each other.
Mack has been the worst here, deliberately hiding her feelings, denying them to Haz, and claiming she's not ready to date, so she doesn't care if Holly goes out with him.
But since Mackenzie blurted out those feelings during an impulsive, angry moment, Holly has been at her worst.
She's refused to tell her friends how she feels,...

What a difference a couple of years makes.
At one point, Freeform was the go-to destination for younger viewers, with shows like Pretty Little Liars giving the bigger networks a run for their money in key demographics.
These days, it seems the network is more interested in experimenting with cost-effective programming, and sadly, the shows that have been so successful up to now will be a distant memory.
Even at that, there's no telling whether scripted offerings will even be available in the future on the network or if the network will even exist.
The recent announcement that Grown-ish would wrap with the second half of its current season set the stage for change.
Over the weekend, official word broke that Cruel Summer and Good Trouble -- the network's last two scripted offerings -- would not be returning for additional seasons.

There’s more trouble in paradise in the latest episode of Married at First Sight. The honeymoon is winding down for the four Denver couples in the Nov. 29 episode of the Lifetime reality show. But for one pair, it looks like the end of the Mexican vacation might also mark the end of their brief marriage.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Nov. 29 episode of Married at First Sight Season 17.]

Fox is the latest network to confirm post-strike return dates, and there are some big shockers.
No, we're not talking about 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 being banished to fall 2024.
We're talking about one of the network's most reliable performers, Family Guy.
The animated hit that has been canceled more than once and returned to much fanfare is on the move.
The Cleaning Lady Season 3: Everything We Know
As revealed Tuesday, the series will move to Wednesdays beginning March 6, 2024, where it will air out of Animal Control.
Both comedies are being paired up with The Masked Singer.
Having Family Guy away from Sunday nights will be different, but perhaps it's a test to see if some of the other Sunday mainstays could be moved to new nights.
It's hard to imagine the move triggering the series' demise.
Alert: Missing Persons Unit Season 2: Everything We Know

Elliot Stabler was first introduced to viewers 24 years ago on the series premiere of Law & Order: Svu.
Since then, we've learned plenty about his past.
When Christopher Meloni departed the series, it seemed like Elliot's story was over.
Thankfully, the actor saw the value in returning to the role with Law & Order: Organized Crime.
As front and center, we witnessed his plight for vengeance after his wife's murder.
The series is undergoing a bit of a creative retool for Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 4.
As a part of that process, we're about to meet more members of the Stabler family than ever before.

TVLine broke the news this week that the show would introduce Joe Jr., Elliot's youngest brother, and Randall, his older brother.
Joe Jr. spent 15 years in the Army before being dishonorably discharged for reasons kept under wraps.

The revolving door that is the cast of Chicago Pd is spinning again.
Variety reports that Tracy Spiridakos is bowing out of the NBC crime drama during Chicago Pd Season 11.
The outlet didn't determine at which point the actress would bow out in the upcoming season.
The good news? We know this news in advance, and the writers can plan accordingly.
It's unclear at this stage how the decision for the actress to depart came about and whether it was her own.
The writers room for Chicago Pd Season 11 only opened recently following the resolution of the WGA strike, so there's a chance that Spiridakos' exit as Hayley Upton is a recent development.
There is a possibility the actress had informed producers of her intention to depart last season and that she allowed the show to craft an exit plot.
We should get more clarity down the line, but it's...

Before "Cheers" ever got to rolling cameras on its very first episode, "Give Me a Ring Sometime," the show went through a great deal of evolution. In fact, the central "will they or won't they" relationship at the heart of the show's first five seasons between barkeep Sam Malone and waitress Diane Chambers didn't exist. The original pitch was to have Sam be a barkeep with a female boss, a dynamic the series would come back around to when Kirstie Alley joined the cast in season 6.

While House of the Dragon managed to continue filming abroad amid the SAG-AFTRA strike, Interview With the Vampire has been halted in Prague.
Deadline revealed Monday morning that the AMC vampire drama has paused production until the strike is resolved.
The news is a bit surprising in the wake of the House of the Dragon Season 2 shoot resuming, but Deadline notes that some of the cast filming Interview With the Vampire Season 2 are SAG members.

The CW is getting prepared for the fall season.
The network on Wednesday unveiled its fall premiere dates, and there are some changes vs. the schedule the network revealed earlier this year.
All American, which was set to remain on Mondays in the fall, has been pushed to midseason.
The scheduling shift isn't surprising: The WGA strike is ongoing, and there's a good chance a SAG-AFTRA strike will go ahead later this evening.
Moving the show off the fall schedule is a good move because there's no telling when new episodes will be ready for air.
The decision means all four returning CW dramas have been delayed until midseason.
All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois, and Walker recently landed pickups for the 2023-24 season.
Canceled AMC series 61st Street, which was set to join All American on the fall schedule, has also been delayed.

The Walking Dead: Dead City stars Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have heard about the Internet chatter. So when TVLine brings up the talk of a romance between mortal enemies Maggie and Negan ahead of the spinoff’s Sunday, June 18, premiere (at 9/8c on AMC), they are well-prepared — and amused. “We love it!” Morgan exclaims.

Over three seasons (and a pandemic special) on Showtime, “Couples Therapy” has quietly become a destination for healing for television watchers who are interested in the difficult work of digging into interpersonal relationships — or watching other people do that work, anyway. Through the empathetic, incisive probing of Dr. Orna Guralnik, executive producers Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman and Eli Despres have not only explored the complexity of couples’ shared and individual lives, but the essential, often painful and yet invariably revelatory therapeutic process that helps people understand themselves, their partners and the world around them.
Following the April 28 premiere of Part 2 of the show’s third season, Variety spoke to Steinberg, Kriegman and Despres about “Couples Therapy” as a mirror for the challenges that many relationship face. In addition to talking about the themes that emerged from the conversations shared with their selected couples this season, the filmmaking trio broke down the process,...

Showtime has successfully petitioned the Television Academy to switch its Emmy submission for the acclaimed docuseries “Couples Therapy” to outstanding structured reality program, Variety has learned exclusively.
During its two previous seasons, the series had been offered in the unstructured reality category, where it competed with shows such as National Geographic’s “Life Below Zero,” TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé” and Hulu’s “The Kardashians.” However, it failed to receive recognition during its respective years. Notably, the show did win a major prize from the Television Critics Association (TCA) Award in 2021 for outstanding achievement in reality programming.

“Couples Therapy” follows Dr. Orna Guralnik, a world-renowned psychologist and psychoanalyst, as she guides couples through real-life therapy sessions. This second installment of the third season follows four couples, with all nine episodes premiering on the Showtime app on April...

This piece contains spoilers for the "Succession" season 4 premiere.
There are a lot of interesting relationships that have been cultivated throughout the modern Shakespearean tragedy that is HBO's "Succession," almost all of them being twisted in their own unique ways. You've got codependent assistants, sadomasochistic wielders of power, and just plain old traumatized sibling rivalry. These relationships are not only important plot details -- they easily dominate the show's entire plot.
However, few relationships on the show are as important as the one between Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) and Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen). From their poorly-timed proposal in the first season to Tom's ultimate betrayal at the end of its third, they have been on one hell of a rollercoaster together. If you search the hashtag "#failmarriage" on TikTok, almost every video is a fan-made edit of their scenes together. And yet, through all the storms they have weathered, it...

This piece contains spoilers for the first episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
In "Yellowjackets," no character proved how wrong first impressions can be like Jeff Sadecki (Warren Kole) did. During the first season, he was set up to be a philandering scumbag who didn't love his wife Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) anymore — hence why Shauna felt comfortable cheating on him with the enigmatic artist Adam (Peter Gadiot). When it turned out he was blackmailing Shaun and her friends with the truth of what they did those 19 months in the wilderness, suspicions seemed confirmed.
Then Shauna confronted Jeff, and the truth came out: he wasn't cheating on her, just indebted to loan sharks after trying to keep his business afloat. His dorky dad/milquetoast wife guy persona isn't cover for a dark side -- it's just who he is. While he's charmingly oblivious ("there's no book club?!"), he's also dependable — he volunteered to...

This piece contains spoilers for the season 2 premiere of "How I Met Your Father."
"How I Met Your Father" proved right out of the gate to be a worthy successor to "How I Met Your Mother," and this second season is looking to be no different. Balancing millennial realism with sitcom hijinks is far from an easy feat, but the show's been able to charm from the beginning. This was especially true of the first season's finale, which utilized a key character from "not-Mother" in a way that was far more than just nostalgia-bait. We're talking, of course, about the appearance of Robin Scherbatsky and how her encounter with Sophie (Hilary Duff) serves as a metaphorical baton-passing from one hopelessly-romantic generation to another.
The spinoff's second season premiere carries on this cross-sitcom symbolism, albeit in a different way. While we already knew that Ellen (Tien Tran) managed to get a job at Goliath Market,...

Even more so than a good script and firm direction, chemistry is the most important thing in a movie romance; without it, audiences will be left unconvinced that they should even care about the love story unfolding on screen, and it can result in some extremely awkward cinematic moments.
Plenty of sub-standard rom-coms have survived on the basis of their chemistry, and in many cases – see: The Adjustment Bureau – the sizzling frisson between the two stars has elevated an otherwise pretty flat film.
However, sometimes Hollywood, so unwaveringly confident in the box office bankability of its leads, forgets to screen-test them together or even begins to entertain the thought that, you know, they might not be all that well suited.
Whether it’s down to the casting department or the simple fact that these actors simply weren’t attracted to each other in real life, the result is the same – a stale,...

It's always fun to reminisce about what lead to people connecting. Couples love talking about how they first met, and long-time friends share stories about how they came to be friends. But Kate Beckinsale and Chelsea Handler didn't tell enough about the genesis of their friendship on "Chelsea Lately" (Weeknights, 11 p.m. Et on E!).
While Handler was a little sketchy on the details -- though admittedly her mistake could be easy to make considering what we're talking about -- it all comes down to animal anuses. Particularly, Beckinsale sent Handler a photo of her dog's anus. Handler wasn't sure if it had been a dog or a cat that initiate the exchange.
"Within, maybe, two-and-a-half seconds, I had a picture of her dog’s a**hole right back," Beckinsale told the audience. "This is a lifelong friendship."
But that story really needed to start at the beginning. Start with...

Screen Australia has invested $2.4m across seven documentaries to create what it says will be $6.5m worth of production.
Cordell Jigsaw will return with a second series of Sbs’s successful Go Back to Where You Came From to test six Australians about their preconcieved notions of asylum seekers by visiting refugees from regions not previously covered.
Producer Tristram Miall and writer/director Robin Hughes will create a six-part series called Creative Minds, exploring the lives of six Australia artists who have significantly contributed to the nation’s cultural landscape.

Award-winning actor with a fastidious intelligence and a hint of inner steel
Anna Massey, who has died of cancer aged 73, made her name on the stage as a teenager in French-window froth. She then graduated, with effortless and extraordinary ease, to the classics and to the work of Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and David Hare. In later years, she became best known for her award-winning work in television and film. What constantly impressed was her fastidious intelligence and capacity for stillness: always the mark of a first-rate actor.
Born in Thakeham, West Sussex, she was bred into show business although, in personal terms, that proved something of a mixed blessing. Her father was Raymond Massey, a Canadian actor who achieved success in Hollywood; her mother was Adrianne Allen who had appeared in the original production of Noël Coward's Private Lives. Anna's godfather was the film director John Ford.
