Today’s filmgoers say they want more cerebral science fiction films, and some moviemakers make an effort to comply. This year’s Arrival is quite ambitious, and last year’s Ex Machina is as good as any sci-fi movie since 2001.
But back in the 1950s producers quickly discovered that the audience wanted little more than monsters and mounting disaster in their sci-fi. Although some wonderful work snuck through, killer robots and alien invaders became the norm. From the 1970s forward, even with Stanley Kubrick aboard,...

23 years ago today, Disney continued its renaissance with the release of “Aladdin,” and Abu, Aladdin, Jasmine, the magic carpet, and the Genie quickly found their way into Disney fans’ hearts. Part of an era for the House of Mouse that’s known as the Disney Renaissance, the movie that showed us a whole new world was released between 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” and 1994’s “The Lion King.” It was the film that started the trend that continues to this day: Celebrities dominating voice acting in animated films. Before the late Robin Williams lent his winning energy to the Genie, voice acting was almost exclusively in the realm of people specifically trained to provide voices for animated characters. Though our favorite street rat-turned-prince got his name in the title, the Genie is the character audiences really responded to, and that continues today: He’s the most memorable part of the...

It's been quite a fall for one of Broadway's crowned princes. At the end of August, Santino Fontana finished filming the first season of Shades Of Blue, opposite Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, which premieres on NBC on January 14th. Then, the next day, he married Jessica Hershberg, whom he met backstage at Birdland in 2011, both waiting to perform. The couple, who briefly overlapped as cast members in Rodgers amp Hammerstein's Cinderella, then headed to L.A. where Fontana began shooting the new musical comedy Crazy Ex-girlfriend. Hershberg, having adopted her married name, just recently headed back to New York to begin rehearsals for the Transport Group's production of Once Upon A Mattress, where she will star opposite Jackie Hoffman Lady Larkin and Princess Winnifred respectively.

ABC's Galavant is the kind of show that thrills me in its gloriously misguided audacity: It's a half-hour musical comedy set in a fairy-tale-style kingdom, with heaps of fourth-wall-breaking jokes, bouncy songs, and catchy lyrics. The show does what it does about as well as it can be done — it's funny and a little naughty, and ironic enough that it might loop all the way back to being earnest. Terrific. And yet it's more of an excellent specimen rather than an excellent TV show. It feels like a great recipe baked in the wrong-sized pan. Still good, but not its best self.Galavant, which premieres Sunday at 8, owes a lot to Princess Bride, Men in Tights, Spamalot, Once Upon a Mattress, and Shrek. That's pretty good company to keep, and in most ways, Galavant fits right in: We have our hero Galavant (Joshua Sasse), who's a bit less heroic than...

Discussing the finer points of her just announced participation in the upcoming Encores mounting of celebrated Vincente Minnelli movie musical The Band Wagon, Ullman opens up about her anticipation in taking on the role of scrappy and smart Broadway lyricist Lily Marton, famously essayed in the original film by Nanette Fabray. Also, Ullman sheds some light on some of the musical material we can anticipate hearing from her in the newly devised Encores edition of The Bandwagon penned by Douglas Carter Beane, including such showstopping classics as That's Entertainment and Louisiana Hayride. Furthermore, Ullman elaborates on her excitement in teaming with noted co-stars Brian Stokes Mitchell and Michael McKean, as well as performing for the...

Jane Krakowski is no stranger to showbiz awards. In 1986 and 1987, she was nominated at the Daytime Emmys for Best Ingenue for playing the role of Rebecca "T.R." Kendall on "Search for Tomorrow." After leaving the daytime drama, Krakowski set her sights on Broadway, originating the role of Dinah in "Starlight Express" in 1987 and playing it for nearly two years before garnering a 1990 Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for playing Flaemmchen in "Grand Hotel." Throughout the 1990s, Krakowski transitioned between film ("Mrs. Winterbourne," "Go"), stage ("Company," "Tartuffe," "Once Upon a Mattress"), and television ("Ally McBeal"), but didn't strike individual awards gold until 2003, when she won a Tony for Featured Actress in a Musical for a revival of "Nine." Committing that performance to film, however, does tend to get people riled up in a way that, say, Nick Jonas playing Marius in Les Misérables on stage does not.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said Burnett will receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Oct. 20 in Washington. A gala performance featuring top names in comedy will be taped and broadcast nationally Oct. 30 on PBS.
The 80-year-old Burnett said she can't believe she is receiving the prize from the Kennedy Center.

Irish stage and screen character actor who appeared in Barbarella, The Verdict and the BBC's 1969 sitcom Me Mammy
For a performer of such fame and versatility, the distinguished Irish character actor Milo O'Shea, who has died aged 86, is not associated with any role in particular, or indeed any clutch of them. He was chiefly associated with his own expressive dark eyes, bushy eyebrows, outstanding mimetic talents and distinctive Dublin brogue.
His impish presence irradiated countless fine movies – including Joseph Strick's Ulysses (1967), Roger Vadim's Barbarella (1968) and Sidney Lumet's The Verdict (1982) – and many top-drawer American television series, from Cheers, The Golden Girls and Frasier, right through to The West Wing (2003-04), in which he played the chief justice Roy Ashland.
He had settled in New York in 1976 with his second wife, Kitty Sullivan, in order to be equidistant from his own main bases of operation, Hollywood and London. The...

My friends, we are ladies and gentlemen of the theater, are we not? I mean, obviously most of us are never going to win a Tony — or God help us — even a Lortel, but we were all at least nonspeaking townspeople in our high school productions of Once Upon a Mattress, and so we understand the pain of seeing one’s name struck off the callback list hanging outside the chorus room; of spending years of your life on a script only to be greeted with a handful of limp carnations and a cagey “how did you think it went?” from people you thought were your friends; of spending two grand on head shots you could ill afford since just the interest on your student loans from Carnegie Mellon is twice that.Yea, a life dedicated to the Great God Thespus-and-Sondheim-Is-Son is one of hardship and heartbreak, and on some...
