Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Fashionista at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Simon Rumley reveals why he’s a fan of drugs in film and his planned foray into London gangster land…
Fashionista finds you back in Austin after Red White and Blue. What excites you about Austin so much? Could Fashionista have been set anywhere else?
I had such a great experience on Red White & Blue for so many different reasons that it was only natural that, at some point, I’d return to Austin. With Tim League (exec producer), Paul Knauss (co-producer) and Karen Hallford (casting director) I’ve got a great bunch of friends who also happen to be great collaborators and they form the core of both films’ Austin based crew and most probably without them neither films would have happened. Beyond that, I love the unique style of Austin, the food, the music,...

FrightFest panel included actor Andy Nyman, director Simon Rumley and Arrow Films’ Mike Hewitt.
The UK genre scene has experienced a “mushroom cloud of independent filmmaking” in the past decade but getting these films in front of audiences is proving an ever-increasing challenge, according to a panel chaired by Screen at Horror Channel FrightFest.
“In the UK, it’s become very hard to release smaller independent films in the traditional theatrical market without having a star or a specific in-built audience,” said Mike Hewitt, brand marketing and business development manager at distributor Arrow Films.
“There’s been a mushroom cloud of independent filmmaking and genre festivals like FrightFest can show these to their audience, who come and pay to see these films. But the challenge is then to get audiences to pay to see it elsewhere, either by buying the DVD, renting it digitally, or the hardest of all in cinemas.”

Throughout his career, filmmaker Simon Rumley has created some of the most uniquely compelling genre efforts we’ve seen. From The Living and the Dead to Red White & Blue to his segments in the anthologies Little Deaths and The ABCs of Death, Rumley has always found ways to push audiences into uncomfortable places. His latest, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, looks to do the same, but in a very different way, as the film is based on the real-life court case that found a young man guilty for the rape and murder of a nun in 1981 Texas, and the strange slew of deaths of those involved in his conviction after his execution.
While at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead sat down with Rumley to discuss his latest project and heard more about his approach to the story, his thoughts on utilizing a script that he didn’t pen himself,...

Colin Morgan fans won't have long to wait for their next fix now that Humans is over.
The former Merlin star will lead the cast of BBC One's haunting new series, The Living and the Dead.
A supernatural drama set in 1890s Somerset, the six-parter has been created by Life on Mars creator Ashley Pharoah.
If that wasn't exciting enough, Glue standout - and BAFTA nominee - Charlotte Spencer is also on board.
Morgan will play Nathan Appleby - a young man faced with dangerous supernatural phenomena - with Spencer cast as his wife Charlotte.
"The Living and the Dead is one of those scripts that you read and are instantly compelled and engaged by," Morgan said. "It's intelligent, chilling and engrossing, it's going to be very special and I can't wait to start working on it with the wonderful creative team."
Spencer added: "It's always been a dream...

An interesting consequence of all this is that the entertainment industry has begun looking beyond capes and cowls in their ‘what can we make a franchise out of?’ discussions. ‘What about other sorts of legendary characters?’ you can imagine them asking, before a big eureka moment… ‘What about Robin bloody Hood?!’

Androids, magic, parallel worlds, ghostly crime, and the apocalypse. Here’s a raft of new forthcoming UK sci-fi and fantasy TV…
The superhero genre may be taking up residence in cinemas for the foreseeable, and Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead are leading Us TV's genre output, but what can fans of UK sci-fi and fantasy look forward to seeing on television over the next year?
There’s Doctor Who of course, which appears to be in rude health and going nowhere, a Christmas Special from Black Mirror, and a hint of new Red Dwarf on its way. (And of course, if there’s anything like justice in the world, the terrific In The Flesh will be recommissioned for a third series.)

BBC America and BBC One have announced the new series The Living and the Dead, written by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, co-creators and writers of Life on Mars, Ashes To Ashes and Eternal Law.
The synopsis:
Somerset, England, 1888. A land and a community on the edge of monumental change, on the great hinge between ancient traditional ways and an industrial, scientific future. A land of ghosts and myths, poltergeists and demons - if there was ever a time for those ghosts to rise out of the ground, this would be that time.

Emerald City
NBC has opted not to move forward with "Emerald City," a ten episode modern and dark reimagining of the classic L. Frank Baum Oz tales said to be more akin to the likes of "Game of Thrones" than the 1939 MGM film.
Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedman's project would've drawn from Baum's original fourteen books and featured more battles, political maneuvers and a very different take on the infamous wizard. Though ordered straight to series, the plan has been scrapped due to a "difference in vision" between the network and show runners. [Source: Variety]
The Living and the Dead
"Life on Mars" and "Ashes to Ashes" co-creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham are re-teaming for the six-part supernatural period drama series "The Living and the Dead" for The BBC .
Set in the English countryside in 1888, the story follows a gentleman farmer who is obsessed with proving the existence of the afterlife.

This project selection boasts a higher-than-usual concentration of fresh talents, many of them presenting first feature film projects after many award-winning shorts, or second features following debuts that traveled extensively on the festival circuit.

Warehouse 13 takes on the dark subject of terrorism, but the result is unbalanced. Here's Jenni's review of Parks and Rehabilitation...
This review contains spoilers.
4.12 Parks and Rehabiliation
This week’s episode wasn’t the strongest we’ve seen from Warehouse 13. We have some good closure over Leena’s death and a peek at how things will run in her absence, but the main artifact plot wasn’t that engaging, went in some strange directions, and didn’t even bother to explain the artifact itself. Also, while I love the use of popular culture gags in the show, this episode seemed to be overstuffed with them, perhaps in an attempt to lighten the rather dark subject of terrorism.
The main plot for this week dealt with eco-terrorism. While I normally applaud the writers' handling of sensitive subjects, this episode felt like they couldn...

It was so nice having Warehouse 13 back in our living rooms last week, and the premiere did a nice job of setting up some future story lines. They dealt well with the death of Lena, a theme that will understandably continue this week, gently and respectfully. There were of course a number of one-liners, most delivered by Pete, and they have been gathered here for your amusement:
Featurette: Warehouse 13 – Best Lines From “The Living and the Dead”
Click here to view the embedded video.
Yes! They included my favorite, the vampire line, a lovely thing coming from the lips of a Buffy/Angel grad, and I loved Pete’s line after. Eddie McClintock gets so many comments about how much he looks like David Boreanaz that I was hoping we’d get some “you look familiar” reference from James Marsters. Ah well, probably too obscure.

4.11 The Living and the Dead
Here we are, back for the second half of Warehouse 13's fourth season. This episode brings a tidy ending to the mid-season finale, gives us some real emotional punches as the team and Artie work through Leena’s death, and sets up a new bad guy and gal for this half, although who will pose the biggest threat remains a mystery. We see many of the common storytelling elements in this episode, it begins with the whole team together, but shortly thereafter, they split off into two teams to solve both conflicts separately. Jinx and Claudia go to save Artie from his self-imposed coma, and Pete, Myka and Mrs. Frederic look for...

When we left our favorite artifact recovery team in October, Claudia had used an artifact dagger on Artie to try and excise the evil personality “Brother Adrian” from him after he had killed Leena and released a plague curse on the world.
Coming back from the long winter hibernation, Warehouse 13 hit the ground running. We picked up right where we left off last fall in "The Living and the Dead," which brought new characters in its wake. Let’s break down the episode...
Good:
Right off the bat, I’m thrilled that Artie was able to be saved from himself. I loved Steve and Claudia’s discussion about how winning wasn’t the point of the warehouse, it was the fight against evil. Steve more than anyone knows what the Warehouse can exact as a cost, given that he died for it, (but he got better).

In the premiere episode “The Living and the Dead,” the series picks up on the stunning, mid-season cliffhanger. Artie (Saul Rubinek) has infected the Warehouse Team – and the world --with the Black Orchid Artifact’s deadly “Sweating Sickness.” If Pete (Eddie McClintock), Myka (Joanne Kelly), Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) and Steve (Aaron Ashmore) can’t reverse what Artie has done, the world will be engulfed by the deadliest pandemic since the Dark Ages. But the Team is already succumbing to the disease’s symptoms as they race to stop the artifact sickness -- before it stops them. Among the new Season 4.5 guest stars are Polly Walker (Caprica, Rome), who portrays Charlotte Dupres, a historian who may know more about the Warehouse than she lets on. Walker’s multi-episode arc begins in the premiere. Later in the season, Kelly Hu (The Scorpion King, Cradle 2 the Grave) joins the cast as Abigail Cho,...

Syfy has announced the dates for its upcoming season/series premieres and finales, and it holds a lot of promise as well as at least one laugh. Season finales have been set for Being Human – But Where’S The Next Season Renewal, Syfy? Premiere dates, as we’ve already told you, for the Mmo game-linked Defiance and for fan favorite Warehouse 13 are now confirmed, as well as the return of Ghost Hunters.
New unscripted series announced include a paranormal show with a southern accent, Deep South Paranormal, and a William Shatner-hosted – Yes, William Shatner – examination of stories of the bizarre and unexplained entitled Weird or What? Yes, a nice title, but once again the Syfy Original Movie has offered up the best chuckleworthy title of the season: Stonados.

Last year The Horror Channel premiered Simon Rumley’s stunning piece of award-winning cinema, The Living And The Dead and this month they are giving his equally astonishing and controversial movie Red White And Blue its UK TV premiere. Set in Austin, Texas, this dark love story follows the disaffected and promiscuous Erica (Amanda Fuller ) as she sleeps with a series of nameless men, until she is befriended by Nate (Noah Taylor), an ex-Iraq war veteran with a sociopathic streak. Nate, seems interested in Erica for more than just sex – but when one of her previous partners, hard-rocking mamma’s boy Franki (Marc Senter) resurfaces, Erica’s actions come back to haunt her, leading to a terrifying climax which has shocked audiences worldwide.
Rumley talks about his deeply shocking yet tenderly moving film, what it was like shooting the movie in America and why distributors are confounded by his work.

Every month the Sound On Sight staff bands together to tackle a specific filmmaker, event and/or some sort of movie related theme. This month our focus shifts towards the “Master of Suspense”, Alfred Hitchcock.
The Trouble With Alfred
’I don’t exactly hate women…’
Once you know those words came from the mouth of Alfred Hitchcock, how would you expect the quote to end? Perhaps with something like ‘…I loathe them.’?
Over time, the legend of Hitchcock as kinky, voyeuristic misogynist has gradually accumulated details, like a snowball rolling downhill, until it has become the kind of unstoppable self-perpetuating leviathan that engulfs the truth the way the avalanche destroys an Austrian hamlet.
Google the man and you’re confronted with a list of accusations: his marriage was a sham. He used to expose himself to actresses to get them to react. He tried to blackmail Tippi Hedren into having an affair with him,...

Simon Rumley has made a name for himself in indie horror with films like The Living and the Dead and Red White & Blue. But he's poised to reach a much bigger audience with his next films, Stranger and Skin, both of which he discusses in the following interview. In the mean time, however, Rumley is contributing to The ABC's of Death, and his latest work "Bitch" is as heady as ever. The third and final segment of the new anthology film Little Deaths – which, with its distrubing views of sex and death, hit unrated DVD yesterday via Image Entertainment – "Bitch" examines the sadomasochistic relationship of an English couple, and what happens when that relationship's balance of power goes...

Get set, Dreadheads; Image Entertainment is about to release the critically acclaimed horror anthology Little Deaths (review here) on unrated DVD. Directed by the UK filmmaking trio of Andrew Parkinson, Sean Hogan and Simon Rumley, the flick features three titillating and depraved tales of sex, power and retribution, all exploring just what can happen when these universal themes are violated in unspeakable ways.
Dread Central recently chatted with writer/director Rumley regarding his contribution to Little Deaths, the sado-masochistic love story "Bitch," which is centered around the relationship of strong-willed receptionist Claire (Kate Braithwaite) and her docile and obedient boyfriend Pete (Tom Sawyer), whom she literally treats like a dog. Eventually Claire’s sexual games become more than Pete can bear, and the tormented boyfriend sets in motion a series of events meant to give Claire the ultimate taste of her own medicine. Red White and Blue deals with some very tough issues, how did the script come together?
Well, it’s something that goes back to when I was touring with The Living and The Dead, I went to a lot of festivals around the world and spoke to a lot of people and read a lot of reviews, and I liked that idea that people thought it was more horrific than any horror film, but they didn’t think it was a horror film. I liked that duality, the emotional reaction that engendered in people. I also liked the idea of doing a film which was disturbing rather than out and out scary.
So I started looking at subject matter for my next film and I’d read about a woman in Tokyo who’d slept with a Japanese policeman and been infected with HIV and then decided to get her...

Earlier this year, Sean Hogan collaborated with Simon Rumley (The Living and the Dead, Red, White and Blue) for the film Little Deaths. Hogan brings a new film to Fantastic Fest called The Devil’s Business. Completely shot on the Canon 5D Dslr, The Devil’s Business tells a story of a couple of hit men that enter their target’s house to carry out the hit. Unfortunately for them, this target is a little different than their typical subjects.

Simon Rumley ( The Living and the Dead , Red White & Blue ) is set to helm Stranger , a thriller chase movie located in the heart of rural China. Inspired by Duel , Rumley penned the script which is being produced by Mark Foligno ( The King's Speech ) and Bob Portal ( Red White & Blue ). Casting begins this week and filming is expected to begin early 2012. Rumley is also developing The Cherished One , written by Lena Rae, a serial killer thriller about a maniac in Texas who uses his young daughter to entice his victims. Oddly billed as a slacker revenge movie, “Red, White & Blue” is, to be fair, a bit of a hard film to pigeonhole, being a bleak and intense, though impressively grounded and believable tale of disaffected characters colliding in violent fashion. Despite its Texas setting, the film was directed by British helmer Simon Rumley, following up his disturbing drama “The Living and the Dead” after a break of 4 years, and boasts a pretty eclectic cast, headlined by television actress Amanda Fuller, Noah Taylor (“Submarine”) and Marc Senter (recently in the semi-successful screen adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s “The Lost”). Following a highly successful run at festivals and having built up some very positive word of mouth, it lands shortly on region 2 DVD via Trinity. Fuller plays Erica, a directionless young woman in Austin, Texas, living in a boarding house and spending her nights trawling the local bars for one night stands and unprotected random sex.

Dread recently met with Brit director Simon Rumley as well as actor/producer Marc Senter and just-returned-from-Shanghai VP of Phoenix Films Edward McGurn. We engaged in a rather lengthy conversation, riffing on subjects ranging from Rumley’s hard-as-nails flick Red, White & Blue to his involvement with the upcoming horror anthology The ABCs of Death.
Other topics were discussed also over a quartet of cocktails beside the rooftop pool at the Andaz Hotel (formerly known as the ‘Riot House’ to those with a knowledge of Southland rock history). Overzealous security, McGurn’s classic Mustang, drinks and horror: You’ve gotta’ love Hollywood!
