Powerful roles and memorable lines have been the hallmark of Clint Eastwood’s career. Cops, cowboys drifters, soldiers and, generally bad ass men’s men … he’s played them all.
The lines that stick with you? Dirty Harry: “You’ve got to ask yourself a question: ‘Do you feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk.” Josey Wales: “When I get to likin’ someone, they ain’t around long.” Bill Munny in Unforgiven: “It’s a hell of a thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got, and all he’s ever gonna have.” And perhaps the most quoted of all, Harry Callahan in Sudden Impact: “Go ahead, make my day.”
Eastwood has a cop for so long he should be collecting a pension. He joined the force with Dirty Harry in 1971 and his last movie as a cop was A Perfect World in (1993). He made five...

The Academy has confirmed to Deadline that this is the first time two international foreign-language movies have been nominated for Best Picture in the same year and the first time that two foreign-language movies have received five Oscar nominations apiece in the same year.
Justine Triet’s contemporary courtroom thriller Anatomy Of A Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s innovative holocaust drama The Zone Of Interest lead the international charge today. The former is a French-language French production, while the latter is a German-language international co-production (with some key U.S. backing).
The two features, which both debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, nabbed five Oscar noms each this morning, including showings in Best Director and their respective screenplay categories: adapted for Glazer and original for Triet and her co-writer Arthur Harari.

The Oscars celebrate excellence in the world of filmmaking, and the people who write the stories and scripts are a huge part of it.
Variety exclusively reported “Barbie” would be campaigned for best original screenplay for the upcoming awards season rather than in adapted screenplay as had been presumed. The decision brought about some interesting debate on social media, and even some Academy members contacted me directly with questions and opinions about it. But it’s not a black-or-white question. The categories in which a movie competes aren’t always as clear as you’d think, as seen through the history of nominees and winners.
Let’s start with the existing definitions. What does it mean to be an original script vs. an adapted one? As most people know, an original work creates an entirely new narrative, while an adapted one transforms pre-existing material into a screenplay.

The mythology around Japan as a nation of everyday ghosts — where the living and the dead share space, occasionally in view of each other — can lead certain western filmmakers into dubious territory: If you don’t recall how Gus van Sant floundered with the mawkish, condescending exoticism of “The Sea of Trees,” trust that it’s best forgotten. Centered on a long-grieving Frenchwoman who finally makes peace with her husband’s death over the course of a Japanese work trip, “Sidonie in Japan” risks similar pitfalls — but Élise Girard’s droll, bittersweet romance mostly dodges them with grace and good humor, plus a pointed awareness of the limitations of its outsider perspective.

Currently among Gold Derby’s top 10 films likely to receive Best Picture bids at this year’s Oscars are “The Color Purple” and “Maestro.” What both movies have in common is that they happen to be produced by Steven Spielberg. If they both get in as expected, this would be the first time Spielberg personally received Oscar nominations for two different movies in the same year.
“The Color Purple” follows Celie Harris Johnson (Fantasia Barrino), an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. Spielberg was previously nominated for producing the 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, which he also directed. This new movie, which is adapted from the 2005 Tony-winning stage musical iteration, is currently in fifth place for Best Picture with 11/1 odds.

Christopher Nolan’s historical epic “Oppenheimer,” about the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II, is preparing for a massive global debut next month. As of now, though, the film’s distributor Universal has yet to announce when — or if — it will premiere in Japan.
A spokesperson for the studio says “plans have not been finalized in all markets.” Universal is releasing the $100 million-budgeted “Oppenheimer” in the U.S. and much of the rest of the world on July 21.
The situation in Japan is complicated given the film’s subject matter and the devastation the bombs wrought on the country. “Oppenheimer” centers on American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), who led the efforts to build the weapons of mass destruction that ended the war. Approximately 200,000 Japanese civilians died after two atomic bombs were dropped in 1945 over the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Though the...

Two Japanese films by internationally renowned auteurs — “Monster” by Koreeda Hirokazu and “Kubi” by Kitano Takeshi — are in the Cannes lineup this year, and both carry with them big box office expectations in Japan.

Any questions regarding whether Steve McQueen’s WWII drama, “Blitz,” will compete at this year’s Academy Awards can be put to rest. Following the Cannes premiere of “Occupied City,” McQueen’s four-and-a-half-hour documentary about Amsterdam under Nazi rule, festival head Thierry Frémaux, per World of Reel, said the movie will likely play the Croisette in 2024.
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham, “Blitz,” which just began post-production, is steeped in the same historical milieu as “Occupied City” and takes place on the ground with Londoners during Germany’s aerial-bombing campaign against Great Britain. While it would’ve been exciting to see the two projects released alongside each other – a quasi-“Flags of Our Fathers”/“Letters From Iwo Jima” pairing, if you will – a 2024 release makes logistical sense for Apple, which no doubt has its hands full this year with Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (premiering...

To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.

Actor Clint Eastwood would have a very different career if it weren’t for A Fistful of Dollars. It was his first leading role in a feature film as the “Man with No Name,” who ultimately became a cultural phenomenon, continuing to influence today’s biggest movies. However, Eastwood could only accept the role because of a strict Rawhide contract condition.

Rawhide was a major part of American Western television, which starred Eric Fleming and Eastwood. It aired for eight seasons, running from 1959 until 1965, making it one of the longest-running series in the genre. Over its six years on television, it lasted an impressive 217 episodes.
Eastwood played Rowdy Yates, who assisted Gil Favor (Fleming), the trail boss of a cattle drive. This adventure allowed the characters to run into various characters and wild journeys along the way.

Slowly but surely, the Oscars are starting to reflect the best in international film, rather than simply celebrating the most impressive achievements in American production.
That’s a good thing for world cinema — to be recognized at last by the historically Hollywood-centric awards show — but a tricky transition, as the Academy reinvents what the Oscars represent.
For the past 50 years, the org has largely relegated non-English-language cinematic achievements to the “international feature” corner.
But a recent push by Academy leadership to expand its membership in every conceivable direction — seeking diversity at home, gender parity where possible and greater representation of industry talent around the globe — has significantly boosted international participation. Today, roughly 20 of the organization’s nearly 10,000 members live abroad.
These overseas members are the new wild card in the voting process, embracing achievements that are no more “foreign” to them — as non-English films were once labeled — than your average Hollywood film.

Another year, another Best Picture nomination for Steven Spielberg. When the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” was called out seven times, including for Best Picture and Best Director for Spielberg. That gives Spielberg a record 12th Best Picture nomination as a producer and also ties Spielberg with William Wyler as having directed the greatest number of Best Picture nominees ever at 13 in total.
Spielberg has directed the following Best Picture nominees: “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “The Color Purple,” “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Munich,” “War Horse,” “Lincoln,” “Bridge of Spies,” “The Post,” “West Side Story,” and now “The Fabelmans.” Of those 13 films, only “Schindler’s List” won the Oscar for Best Picture so far.

Who doesn't love a good war movie — the romance, the spectacle, the exhilaration, the drama, the heartbreak? Well, as it turns out, most critics seem to hate a majority of war films and save their positive reviews for a select few, such as "Apocalypse Now," "Full Metal Jacket," and "Saving Private Ryan." Granted, the genre has produced some real stinkers over the years, but plenty of war epics also endured unwarranted critical disdain; many of these pictures provided rock-solid entertainment but were labeled cliché, sentimental, or too noble for their own good.
Imagine calling a film set in World War II too earnest or berating a romantic epic for its love story.
Look, I'm just as enamored with and respectful of a critic's opinion as the next person, but we can all agree they get it wrong sometimes. As proof, I've compiled a list of war epics I believe were...

The tone of Clint Eastwood's 2006 war film "Flags of Our Fathers" might be surprising. "Flags of Our Fathers" is a film extrapolated from the celebrated 1945 Joe Rosenthal photograph titled "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima," taken at the eponymous battle, and featuring a group of American soldiers hoisting their nation's flag just after the carnage. The photograph also served as the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial, sculpted in 1954 and located in Arlington, Virginia. The screenplay was an adaptation of a book by James Bradley and Ron Powers, whose fathers are featured in the photograph, hence the title.
Ever since the days of "Twelve O'Clock High" in 1949, whenever American filmmakers make movies about American soldiers, they tend to be romanticized stories of survival and victory. Given the subject matter of "Flags of Our Fathers," one might presume that it, too, stands as a tale of honor and tenacity.

In 2006, Clint Eastwood directed a pair of war dramas that stood as companion pieces. The first, "Flags of Our Fathers," based on the 2000 book by James Bradley and Ron Powers, was a contemplative and violent dramatization of the Battle of Iwo Jima, told from the perspective of the seven American soldiers who famously raised an American flag to signify their battlefield victory. The raising of the flag was captured on film by the Pulitzer-winning photographer Joe Rosenthal, and his picture served as the inspiration for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington DC. Eastwood's film climaxed with Rosenthal's taking of the picture.
"Flags of Our Fathers" was released on October 20, and its companion, "Letters from Iwo Jima" was released on December 20. "Letters" also detailed the events of the Battle of Iwo Jima, but from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. Because Steven Spielberg is widely acknowledged to be at or near the top of the list of the most accomplished filmmakers of our time, it’s assumed that he must have a boatload of Academy Awards on his mantel. But in fact, he has just three to show for his 19 overall nominations: for directing and producing Best Picture victor “Schindler’s List” in 1993 and for directing “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999. As hard as it is to believe, that last win was almost a quarter-century ago, just short of 24 years.
The presumption among Gold Derby voters is that Spielberg is overdue to punch his Oscar ticket with another gold man or three as director, producer and co-writer of “The Fabelmans,” the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama that opens next Friday in limited fashion before going wide on November 23. Just in time for its three-year anniversary, Apple TV+ has fired the latest volley in the streaming wars, raising its subscription price for the first time since its service launch in November 2019. TV Line reports that as of Monday, October 24, 2022, the price of a monthly Apple TV+ subscription has increased from 4.99 to 6.99.
Before it debuted in 2019, Apple TV+ was originally said to be eyeing a 9.99 subscription price, so the new price is still below that and other streaming services like Disney+, which is set to introduce an ad-supported version in December along with a price increase to 10.99 for its ad-free option. This year also kicked off with Netflix announcing a price hike for the first time since October 2020, bumping up the rate for a standard subscription plan to 15.49, just a few months before reports circulated that it lost 54 billion overnight.

Clint Eastwood's first film as a director was "Play Misty for Me" in 1971, in which he also starred. Eastwood would direct 12 additional features in which he also played the lead prior to "Bird" in 1988, his first film as a director in which he did not appear. "Bird," as this writer recalls, represented a shift in Eastwood's career. He was no longer the star and director of "tough guy" thrillers and Westerns, but a more thoughtful, soulful director. At age 58, Eastwood seemed to have entered a "mellowing out" phase, more interested in deconstructing his prior career as a tough guy. When he wasn't tearing down his image in films like "White Hunter, Black Heart" and "Unforgiven," he was leaning into calmer, sometimes downright gentle films like "The Bridges of Madison County" or "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

HBO Max crime drama Tokyo Vice begins by going back to the past…twice.
The eight episode series opens in 2001. Floppy-haired journalist Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) and Tokyo police detective Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) enter into the top floor of a plush Tokyo restaurant to have a meeting – or more accurately be threatened – by the number two figure in a Japanese crime family. After the yakuza boss delivers his ultimatum Tokyo Vice flashes back even further in time to the beginning of its story in 1999, when Jake is fresh out of college and preparing to apply at Tokyo’s premier newspaper, Mainichi Shimbun (a fictional stand in for the real Yomiuri Shinbun).
Though the Y2K era may not feel that long ago to some folks *clutches Beanie Babies*, Tokyo Vice is very much a period piece. There’s no issue with that,...

The accusations came to light in a post on local site Shukan Josei Prime with actresses anonymously alleging impropriety. According to Deadline’s sister publication, Variety, the alleged predatory behavior has been linked to Sono’s acting workshops and an upcoming workshop has been cancelled.
Actor Yuki Matsuzaki, who has appeared in such films as Letters From Iwo Jima and The Pink Panther 2, has been tweeting about the allegations:
Now that Sion Sono is outed as a sexual predator who preys on young actresses luring them with roles in his films, I wonder if Any of the major Japanese film studios and TV networks would condemn such predatory practices? How about Japan Academy Awards?...

Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car made history this morning, becoming the first Japanese film ever to score an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. What’s more, Hamaguchi is now only the third Japanese filmmaker to be nominated in the Best Director category. With nods in further key categories Best International Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay, Drive My Car has four nominations total, tying Akira Kurosawa’s Ran as the most-nominated film ever from Japan (though the latter was a French co-production).
Drive My Car also joins an elite, but growing, club of foreign-language films to be nominated in the Best Picture category. That includes recent winner Parasite from South Korea.

When Steven Spielberg directs a movie, the chances are good the finished work will land among the year’s Best Picture nominees — and that was proven once again on Tuesday morning as Spielberg’s “West Side Story” landed among the 2022 Oscars Best Picture nominees.
Including his breakout blockbuster “Jaws,” Spielberg has now directed 12 Best Picture nominees: “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “The Color Purple,” “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Munich,” “War Horse,” “Lincoln,” “Bridge of Spies,” “The Post,” and “West Side Story.” Of those 12 films, only “Schindler’s List” won the Oscar for Best Picture.
As an individual nominee, Spielberg has received a record 11 Best Picture nominations — for all of the above films except “Jaws” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and also Clint Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima,” which counted Spielberg as a producer.
Directing 12 Best Picture nominees in his career puts Spielberg in rarified air.

Two years after he was notoriously left out of the Best Director Oscar lineup for “Jaws,” Steven Spielberg earned his first shot at the gold for helming the sci-fi drama “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Although he lost to fellow newcomer Woody Allen (“Annie Hall”), the recognition was enough to kick off his and the academy’s warm, 44-year relationship, which has resulted in his three competitive wins from 17 nominations. Now that he is on track to score his eighth directing bid for “West Side Story,” he will likely come one step closer to beating William Wyler’s category record of 12 and make history as the first director to be recognized in six different decades.
Spielberg’s single 1970s directing nomination was followed by two in the 1980s for “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1982) and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1983). He was bested on those back-to-back tries by Warren Beatty (“Reds”) and Richard Attenborough (“Gandhi”), respectively.

Clint Eastwood, 91, opens “Cry Macho” tomorrow in theaters and HBO Max. It’s his 42nd film as a director, and perhaps his last. Reviewing his career reveals a dual nature about his role in film history that is surprising, but also explains his success.
Eastwood has been both one of the most successful and acclaimed directors and actors over the last half century. His commercial peak came in the 1980s, while his biggest acclaim as a director spanned 1992 (“Unforgiven”) through 2006 (“Letters from Iwo Jima”).
He signed his first contract with Universal in 1954, became a TV star with “Rawhide” in 1959, and landed the role that defined his persona in 1964 with Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful of Dollars.”
With 50 years behind the camera, he doesn’t have the longest-running career as a director; Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese started earlier and Agnes Varda’s filmmaking spanned 65 years. But Eastwood’s 51 years of...

Clint Eastwood’s 5 Worst and 5 Best Movies as a Director, From ‘The Rookie’ to ‘Unforgiven’ (Photos)
[To clarify, in the best five, it’s Unforgiven as Clint Eastwood‘s best (making Bronco Billy fifth best), and on the worst list, it’s The Rookie as the worst (making Jersey Boys fifth worst)]
The Best
“Unforgiven” (1992): Clint Eastwood held on to screenwriter David Webb Peoples’ revisionist western until the time was right, and the result was an Oscar-bestowed turning point. Evocatively, suspensefully detailing a desperate widower’s reckoning with his savage past, it tracked powerfully as both a pungent deflating of merrily violent western myths and a scarily tense depiction of how, as Eastwood’s killer tells a scared young man, “We all have it comin,” kid.” By the end, each gunshot is Eastwood mercy-killing a genre he loves, and knocking us to our senses about bloody movie justice.
“Million Dollar Baby” (2004): A poor young female boxer (Hilary Swank) wants to fight. The trainer (Eastwood) reluctantly trains. Punches await, small, and huge. An unabashedly rich-in-feeling movie about toughness,...
