Hysterical!

Warning: Spoilers
Another episode where we get to see the banter between Malloy and Reed develop into their unique friendship. The rookie vs mentor arc is being developed in this episode when we see Malloy deferring to Reed several times. These short exchanges are hysterical because they plot Reed's "happy home" mentality against the happy bachelor Malloy is so proud of. The clincher is when Malloy realizes he can get rid of the rest of the puppies with his single girlfriends!

I miss the humor featured in these early episodes. It's often rare in the late seasons. This episode is refreshing. Also glad to hear Pete finding his raspy delicious voice!

Puppies For Everyone!
chashans27 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is just simply a fun episode. One which doesn't take itself at all completely serious. There are several laugh out loud moments. At least, there were for me.

Reed's dog, named Queenie, has produced 8 adorable puppies. (Thus, she must be the "Producer" within the episode's title.) Reed spends the entirety of the show trying to unload those puppies on an unsuspecting public. First, in the Police Station locker room, Reed attempts to corral fellow Officer Jerry Walters into taking a pup. The conversation begins with an air of delightful pleasantries and concludes with Reed's neck clamped firmly within the severely incensed Officer Walters' clenched teeth and jaw. Okay, it didn't get as bad as that. However, had Reed pushed just a little bit more... Malloy quite possibly would have been looking for a new partner.

After switching up puppy-pushing tactics when luring in yet another fellow Officer - and failing at it - Reed turns his own puppy-dog eyes to the most obvious possible adopting victim of all. His partner, Pete Malloy. Though he doesn't take to throttling Reed by the throat in response like Officer Walters, Malloy lets Reed know that he's not about to weigh down his cheerished bachelorhood by adopting an attention-demanding little mutt.

Malloy gets to demonstrate some good detective skills when Adam-12 responds to a silent burglary alarm at a shuttered business. Tracking his criminal prey through a big hole in a wall (from one business establishment to the next) Malloy successfully gets his man and then sends Reed to go and get the man's female cohort who takes off out the door. Reed ends up curious as to how Malloy knew there was a second, hiding bad-girl. That's when Malloy gets to reveal his Sherlock Holmes deductions. Good for him!

There is a strange moment in the conclusion of this segment. The area of this business that has been broken into is established as being on a semi-busy city street. Malloy takes the squad car down the building's back alley. It seems the location is in the middle of a Los Angeles city/suburban location. However, during the arrest's wrap-up conversation in that back alley, there are a couple of camera shots of Malloy only. The background behind Malloy is that of a beautiful hillside with bushes and trees. The contrast of Malloy's lovely nature backdrop to the city alleyway backdrop behind Reed and the criminals, draws the viewer's attention out of what's going on and what's being said in the scene. Not necessarily a "goof". Just a strange oddity which perhaps could have been avoided with better editing.

From here, M & R return to the Station House to write up their reports of the burgulary event. We're treated to a scene in which Seargeant MacDonald takes a moment to bring Reed back to 2nd Grade elementary school for a lesson in spelling. Perhaps it's Reed's embarrassment in the scolding that prevents him from suggesting puppy-adoption to his Commanding Officer.

After more pestering of Malloy by Reed, "You'll love being a puppy papa", the partners spot a commotion on the side of a street. Numerous adults are gathered around, watching in quiet amusement, as a young boy struggles to remove his head which is stuck, lodged between two fence poles. It's an adorable little scene which features comic actor Foster Brooks in an unfortunately very small role. Apparently, prior to M & R's arrival, Foster's unnamed character had been enjoying a moment teasing the child that he'd be stuck between those fence poles for the rest of his life. While this bit of teasing by a full grown adult of a terrified little idiot is quite amusing, the funniest bit comes in Malloy's congratulations to Reed who frees the numbskull's skull from the fence. Very unexpected behavior from the Stawberry Fox towards his unsuspecting underling.

The episode's final segment sets in, triggered by Reed accidentally jinxing himself and Malloy. He mentions that they've only another 15 minutes of patrol and then they can head home. Malloy gives him the evil eye as Dispatch calls out over the radio, giving the partners one further assignment.

This last call for help features a guest appearance by the incredibly gorgeous Karen Black. She plays the victim of a late-night peeping-Tom. Malloy and Reed arrive at her home and immediately a heavy, heaving steady steaming air of overpowering wantful lust begins to rise. Though Black's character wears a nightgown which drapes all the way to her ankles, there is nothing less than 100% all-enveloping sex appeal unavoidingly present, oozing from every pore of her body. All of it is oozing directly at our heroic - and nervously gulping - Officer Peter Malloy. Just when you start wondering if the family-friendly Adam-12 is about to venture into unforseen R-rated territory, Reed steps in and makes a suggestion that utterly smacks that possible R-rating right across it's face. He delivers one of the funniest moments in the show's entire 7 year run.

This mostly light-hearted and very fun episode wraps up with Malloy and Reed heading back to the Station at the end of their shift. When Reed tempts Malloy with the thought of - not a puppy, but - dating the seriously HOT Karen Black character, Malloy reminds the young rookie of the Department's policy of "No Fraternising" with any members of the public encountered while on the job. The concluding moment's with the beautiful young female does inspire Malloy in another way though. Malloy realizes that the many girls he's dated while maintaining his bachelor status, would all make terrific puppy mamas.

Yes, a wonderful episode of Adam-12 which is just simply a whole lot of fun.
