"Six-Gun Nelson" At The Supermarket
ccthemovieman-125 March 2008
For someone my age looking at this episode in early 2008 really brings me back to my youth. As a young kid in the '50s, all of boys had cap guns and the like and went around shooting each other, imitating our heroes from television westerns. As Ozzie sarcastically mentions early on here, westerns dominated TV in the late '50s.

Ozzie, ever the little kid, shoots it out with neighborhood kids and then regales them with a great story about his great grandfather "Six-Gun Nelson." He and Harriet act out in the dreamlike scene, which is pretty funny. Ben Weldon, who always played the bad guy in a lot of Superman TV shows, does it here but "kills" Nelson!

Afterward, Ozzie invites the kids inside so they can watch their TV hero, "Rex Barton." Ozzie watches along with them, of course, and outdraws Barton, really impressing the kids. The unofficially enter him in a contest with the TV icon, who is appearing at the local supermarket the next day. Veteran actor Ben Johnson plays "Rex," by the way.

Ozzie preparing for that gunslinger contest, what happens, the reaction of his neighbors (Frank Cady as "Doc Williams" and Gordon Jones as "Butch") and a great song by Rick ("Believe What You Say") all make this another excellent episode. Whoever was in charge of selecting which episodes were part of this "Best Of....." DVD, knew what they were doing. Several of the episodes were in this 1958 season.
