Another episode of Helen's jealous streak?
moakin200522 October 2019
Aren't we all getting just a bit tired of Helen and her insecurities? How many times does Andy have to pledge his love for her? I say ditch her and start courting Alice.

Helen Again Seen as a Devil
Hitchcoc3 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Helen Krump gets a lot of heat from reviewers. The relationship between her and Andy seems to be going nowhere. Andy and Opie continue to live with Aunt Bee and there doesn't seem to be room for Helen. Granted, she's abrasive at times, but Andy does some stupid things. Here, an old girlfriend shows up and Helen is treated like dirt. By the way, Howard is doing pretty well, licking up Andy's scraps. The episode is just so tiresome.

Howard's music his mom talked about in "The Lodge?"
vitoscotti12 August 2022
A unique story. But mostly everything is forced. Stunning Alice (Evan MacNeil) popping up was awkwardly done. Live wire Helen (Aneta Corsaut) woke up a struggling episode.

Andy Griffith had most of the comedy on his shoulders and it showed. Got interesting in the cabin. The Howard - Alice relationship was odd for barely knowing each other. Howard really had no business interrogating Andy. Alice seemed playfully giddy on her return from the woods that was provocative. The Helen in the woods scene was a nice touch. The dance song and the sing-along were the episode's highlights. The outer space Goober epilogue was fun and the only real big laugh.

about that song...
judilyn-4042529 October 2017
Just to respond to the previous poster about 'the oddest musical moment' when the group sings: it's a number from the musical "Call Me Madam" titled "You're Not Sick, You're Just In Love." It was originally sung by Ethel Merman in the stage production, then later in the movie version, and performed by other famous singers as well. It's written that way, as two songs in one, by Irving Berlin, one of the greatest musical songwriters of all time. Also, I'd hazard a guess that Andy's late wife was the reason he 'let a dish like Alice get away.'

A Virtual Carbon Copy of Season 5 "Guest in the House"
headr-0876824 June 2023
If you think you saw this episode before, you basically did if you watched season 5 Guest in the House. In that one a lovely daughter of an old family friend is invited by Aunt Bee to stay with the Taylor's and Helen Crump has a jealous fit just like she does in this episode. About the only difference in this episode is that in order to settle Helen Crump down, Andy dumps the unfortunate family friend off on Howard Sprague instead of sticking the poor gal with Goober, like he did in the season 5 episode..and the funny part of it all is that they go to a place where they have dancing in both episodes, and of course the hapless gal in season 5 gets stuck dancing with Goober while in this episode she winds up dancing with Howard sprague. As usual you can still count on a happy ending. The main thought you will have at the end of both episodes is wondering why Andy didn't dump Frumpy Crump for either one of these attractive and friendly gals.

Not TAGS We Love
AudioFileZ17 January 2024
This episode is an outlier. We've seen Helen get jealous before and if memory serves this kind of dynamic between Helen and Andy doesn't really fit in with the Mayberry ethos. More like stuff from the world outside of Mayberry. That said an old girlfriend of Andy returns to town and Andy doesn't stand up for who Helen is to him when the old friend and Helen meet. Instead of calling Helen his girlfriend he chooses to introduce her as Opie's teacher. BAD. Andy's core character isn't this dumb or, even, devious. But, the episode needs a quick setup so this is it. Smoothing things over by introducing Howard Sprague as Alice's date seems to work. Except the old friend is kind of keeping the door open to which a weekend retreat to the mountains for the two couples goes south. Again, Andy squirms, even lying which isn't the Andy we ever want to see. This episode is just too far from TAGS we love. Sure, writers must fill in for not having Barney, but not this way. No bad performances or anything of that nature, just a poor script for what we watch TAGS for. I don't even fault Helen's reactions because they're spot-on what a person in the kind of relationship we are led to believe is happening between her and Andy. Just a writer's mis-step that actually made an episode when it shouldn't have.
