Bill Sanderson is a basketball team owner who learns that his star player Frankie was forced by his brother-in-law Alan Bailey to throw a game in college. He confronts Alan in his office, who arrogantly and smuggily admits what he did. Alan tries to blackmail Bill into having Frankie throwing more games otherwise he will contact the commissioner, and report the both of them. Mr. Sanderson, who is larger and stronger, in anger backhands Alan causing him to fall, hit his head on a coffee table, and die. In a panic the team owner enlist Tony, a player (who no longer plays due to an injury) to help him cover up the crime. Barnaby is hired by Tony's sister, who is Alan's wife, to investigate his disappearance. When Tony seems like he is going to crack after a run in with Barnaby,, Bill murders him and stages it as a robbery Barnaby is now suspicious of Bill Sanderson and investigates him for both murders.
