****SPOILERS**** Promising young neurosurgeon Dr. Dennis Green, Jerry Lewis, is getting on his bosses Dr. Ben Casey & Dr. David Zorba's, Vince Edwards & Sam Jaffe, nerves with his antics in and out of the hospital that makes them feel he isn't quite right for the job. Dr. Green as it turns out is only making a clown out of himself to keep his patients, mostly suffering from serious brain trauma, and their loved ones from knowing just how serious their conditions are. It fact during the course of this "Ben Casey" episode most of them under Dr.Green's care end up dead before it's over.
Dr. Green is also trying to start up his relationship with an old flame of his Karen Fischer who's dad Mr. Burns a school bus driver is being treated by him for a what turned out to be a terminal brain tumor. It's both Karen's dad and Helen Fenton's husband who was shot in the head while out hunting, in being mistaken by another hunter for a bear, who don't have long to live. But Dr. Green their attending physician doesn't have the heart to tell them the truth about their terminal conditions. It's there where Dr. Casey and Zorba step in by giving Dr.Green the business in not having the smarts, in his bedside manners, to be a professional and competent brain or neurosurgeon.
***SPOILERS*** It's little Stevie Clyton who's suffering from a serious brain tumor and is not expected to live that brings the best out of the funny man Dr. Green in, by his screwy antics, giving the boy hope in the upcoming operation he's to have, with Green doing the operating, to save his life. With Dr. Green about to throw in the towel and quit medicine for good Dr. Casey, who still believes in him, talks him into going through with the operation so little Steive, who thinks the world of the zany Dr. Green, would feel comfortable while going under the knife! Woundeful acting and directing job by Jerry Lewis that shows that he can handle a serious as well as a comedic role that he went out of his way to do. It took a while to take Lewis serious in him more or less playing himself in the first half of the Ben Casey episode but when it called for him to be serious in his role as a brain surgeon under pressure he made you for a time feel like he wasn't Jerry Lewis at all but a Spencer Tracy or John Barrymore.
