Civil rights come to Bonanza
bkoganbing15 August 2016
The civil rights revolution came to Bonanza with this episode as Dan Blocker gets involved with the struggles of a black family moved west because they don't want to sharecrop in the South. Presumably they want to sell their product uninhibited.

It's not a good beginning as Hoss finds young George Spell stealing a candle. The kid is so ingenuous in his explanation though about making a wish for better things for his family that Hoss just has to get involved.

The post Civil War era had its share of rednecks and family patriarch Ossie Davis has to deal with Roy Jenson and Jerry Summers of that variety.

This must have been a labor of love for Dan Blocker. Texas born and bred Blocker was an active liberal and campaigned for many a Democrat up to his death. In fact in his memoir about his family John Mitchum was floored by the fact he was a liberal. He seemed like such a Texas good old boy.

One of Dan Blocker's absolute best.
