Underrated

Warning: Spoilers
I've been a BtVS fan since a teen. I think this episode is severely underrated. I love that it shows a side of Buffy succumbing to her sadness over parker and trying beer for the first time and getting caught up in it all. Even though she turns into cave-buffy her slayer skills still come through in the end and she still saves everyone.

This beer will give you more than a hangover
Tweekums14 April 2019
Buffy is still finding it impossible to get over the way Parker treated her; she imagines they might get back together even as she watches him flirt with other girls. Then one day she goes to the pub where Xander is now working as a barman and ends up drinking beer with four obnoxious frat boys. As the night goes on their IQ rapidly diminishes. While this is going on Willow is at the Bronze with Oz but he seems more interesting in the female singer on stage. The next day Buffy seems a bit out of it but nothing worse than a bad hangover... another evening drinking with the boys and things get worse; they seem to revert to an atavistic, caveman like state. Inevitably things get worse before they get better.

This might not be the best episode but I still found it rather fun. The way the beer effected Buffy and the boys was funny and not too rushed; I also liked the explanation as to why it affected them that way... nothing complicated or overly evil; just a one line explanation. This also meant the episode had no real villain which made a change. The episode also had some character development; I think it is safe to safe the 'Parker Situation' is over but a new situation may be developing between Willow and Oz. The cast did a fine job; Sarah Michelle Gellar was great as she played 'Cave girl Buffy'; Alyson Hannigan was a delight as Willow, especially in the scene between her and Parker; and Nicholas Brendon did a fine job as Xander gets flustered taking an order at the bar. The episode's ending was suitably light hearted. Overall I'd say that even though this might be considered a filler episode it is definitely worth watching.

A nice way to end the Parker fixation.
m-4782629 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Fear Iself and Beer Bad, are both equally hilarious. Only Fear Itself is scarier, and the one that stands out the most. And give Anya a chance at a real closure. Beer Bad, is Buffy's turn. The opening sequence sets the tone for the whole episode, and despite what some reviewers said, it's a sign of a good written one. Those insufferable rich boys, who became caveman, after ingesting too much beer. Was poetic justice at its finest. Buffy getting caught in the crossfire, was too. All she did since she arrived in college, was making poor choices, and hanging with the wrong crowd. Case in point, this group of self important kids. And the fact that she knocked out Parker, twice, during his glimpses of genuine vulnerability. Was priceless. I'm not a big fan of this season Willow. Who calls herself more independent, while being unable to wipe her nose, without her boyfriend's approval. Him leaving next episode, is still heartbreaking, but much needed for her character to grow as a person. It's also one of those episodes, that made me root for Xander. And this comes from someone who didn't since around first season finale. As usual, the soundtrack is on point, and gave the episode another appeal, with tracks by Luscious Jackson, Ash, Kim Ferron and Collapsis.

Don't drink and ape out
Realrockerhalloween2 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A terrible episode following Buffy as she experiments with alcohol and turns into a cage woman. Xander takes a job as a bar tender and feels humiliated by the local guys on campus. Its a bad episode because the owner of the joint only does it because they act like jerks and he wants to get even. I know its to show Xander he should aim not to be like him, but having the frats make fun and take away a girl he tried to pick up worked just fine. It felt like over kill especially since the effects aren't all that interesting to see cave people in modern times. Buffy spins in a chair, talks funny and knocks someone out without causing real damage or going on a chaotic spree.

One item I did like was Willow confronting Parker for treating her friend so horribly and rejecting his advanced. Maybe it will help him realize he isn't the end all be all in the dating world and help get his life together. Which makes Xander look amazing in comparison as he treats women with respect and tries to be a good guy.

Drinking your problems away
ossie8514 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Buffy is upset that Parker used her and resorts to drinking, little does she know is that the beer has been magically poisoned to turn anyone that drinks it into a primitive caveman, Buffy and a group of others fall victim to this. Also it is becoming increasingly obvious that Oz and Veruca are attracted to each other.

Why It's So Good - A fun, laid back, episode beginning with humorous Buffy imaginations of Parker apologising and then it throws in a dose of karma with the smart college boys turning into cave men. Not much is achieved in this episode but frequent viewing is recommended as it ages well. The Veruca/Oz encounters are interesting.

Watch Out For - Parker's forgive me speeches.

Quote - "Well excuse me Mr. 'I spent the sixties in an electric Kool-Aid funky Satan groove.'" - Xander to Giles.

This whole stupidity with Parker is old news now. Let's get to where they ruin the show by putting her with Spike ... And the feminist double standard crap from Willow is not helping.

Possibly BTVS worse episode
katierose2955 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the time BTVS hides it messages using metaphors inside the story. "Beer Bad" knocks people over the head with its meaning... Literally. There's a club. From the snotty frat boys, to Veruca, to the stupid cavemen attacking cars, the whole episode is pretty annoying. It doesn't contribute anything to the larger story arc and has a few flat-out cringe worthy moments. If you're watching on DVD, I recommend skipping this episode.

Basically, the episode revolves around Buffy and some fraternity boys turning into cavemen. Frat guys are always bad news in the Buffyverse. Either their feeding girls to snake monsters (season two's "Reptile Boy") or government commandos (season four's "The Initivitive") or sleazy, jerk cavemen like here in "Beer Bad." Xander has gotten a job as a bartender and is dealing with stuck-up college patrons. Buffy, meanwhile, is trying to get over Parker and is spending a lot of time in the bar, drinking with a group of guys. Soon, Xander begins to notice that they're all acting strangely.

It seems that the owner of the bar, sick of the students' superior attitudes, has drugged the beer. He's spiked it with a magical potion that turns people into cavemen. Now, Xander and Giles have to try to watch Buffy and round-up the cavemen. Willow, meanwhile, is angry over Oz's growing fascination with Verca, a club singer. She runs into Parker and the two of them argue about his treatment of Buffy. When a fire breaks out, Cave-Buffy has to help rescue everyone... Even Parker.

Of course, even bad BTVS episodes have some good parts. I do like Xander and Giles trying to save Buffy together. Season four does a good job of showing their relationship develop. They're growing closer from their positions as the two non-collegiate Scoobies. Also, Willow reaming Parker is nice. I really hate that guy. And he does get banged on the head with a club, which is a good thing.

On the downside, The whole episode is kind of silly. Cavemen bouncing around campus, Buffy drawing on walls and speaking in short declarative sentences, like "Buffy want beer." Vercua singing. (I also really hate Veruca.) It's all really annoying. Plus, that one frat guy's constant use of the phrase "socic-economic" makes me want to pull my hair out. He's not even using it properly. It's such a relief when Xander finally locks him up and snaps, "There's the socio-economic ramifications of being mean to me." Thank you Xander!

My favorite part of the episode: Xander's boss's explanation for how he came across the magic caveman spell. "My brother-in-law's a warlock." It's much simpler and funnier than the average mystical amulet deal.

Under-rated
mahoneyjame-741-94326514 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I've found that this episode is rather under-appreciated by lots of die-hard Buffy fans. And that's understandable. This came out when most other TV shows on the WB, including 7th Heaven, had certain episodes funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, to point out the seriousness of the consequences of drug use among youth. Most shows did their job to try and scare our youth out of drug use, which is noble I guess, but Whedon had a different idea.

What if instead of doing what those "other" shows did, he made a parody of those types of episodes and almost called the ONDCP out? And Voila, "Beer Bad" was born, which is not a hilarious episode that shows how stupid intoxicated people act, but also a commentary on Government funded TV Propaganda.

Buffy is upset after her recent encounter with Parker Abrams goes awry, and her friend Xander, offers her a beer. When she accepts, she finds out the hard way that the beer is cursed, and her mind deteriorates into the mentality of a caveman, to the point where she can't even complete a sentence, or identify certain household appliances (her TV is off, she says, "Want people? Where people go?")

Though her IQ has dropped, she still finds capability to perform her heroic tasks a slayer, and eventually the spell of the beer wears off.

The episode does it's job, but not the job you would think. We see what drinking beer has done to Buffy, but instead of being genuinely concerned, we're laughing at her and her ridiculous new behavior.

None of us necessarily want to go drinking afterwards, but we're not sitting through an hour long lecture about consequences like we would with 7th Heaven or other shows. The message is clear and simple, stated by the man Xander himself, "BEER BAD! BAD, BAD BEER!"

Don't drink...
drago-jelisic15 May 2008
What the... This episode is one of the worst BtVS episode ever.

This episode had only one point - don't drink and that's it.

I have never seen an episode as bad as this one on BtVS.

As almost all episodes there often is one moment which makes you laugh and yes - there where some here too.

But there is got to be a reasonable plot - which unfortunately is missing here...

Revenge is the main plot - and we all know that it never ends good.

Even the sun has it marks and this is BtVS biggest mark.

I give this episode 3/10 but it's a really weak three.

I enjoy this for a different reason.
gregsgirl714 January 2020
I understand fans thinking that this episode is one of the worst in Buffy history, however I love it for a different reason.

Think of young woman out there being treated like they are special to someone, and then that someone uses them to get exactly what they want (sex) and then being thrown to the side so they can move on to the next one. Unfortunately this happens way to often in our society. We lack intimacy all the time. Every new show out there is so full of sex and violence that women and men have no idea what's real and what isn't. They rely on porn to full their void and the expect their relationship or lack there of to have the same type of meaning.

This episode shows us that Parker wants his ego stoked because my guess is in High School woman ignored him so in College he's using them. Buffy on the other hand only knows Angel and that when he truly loves her he turns evil. Buffy can't understand why Parker used her and Parker can't understand why she became attached. Add the comping mechanisms that we as humans do; drinking, sex, drugs and we get beer bad. Not to mention Buffy hitting Parker over the head with a stick. That part ruled! Yet she still saved his life.

Look at this episode as a marker for woman who give their heart to someone and men who believe their owed something from previous women. It's a shoulder shrug for sure. I like it!

Terrible!
Joxerlives6 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Beer Bad

The Good; Okay there is some, Willow's Jerry Springer style confession (anyone ever read the hilarious Buffy Springer Show fanfic?) Much of the Xander the bartender stuff is funny. Giles describing caveBuffy as walking with a 'sideways limp'. Willow's confrontation with Parker. Buffy's great dream sequence (is that chocolate chip cookie dough fudge he's holding?)

The Bad; Everything else, possibly the worst Buffy episode ever?

Best line; Xander; "Nothing can defeat, THE PENIS!" (how true!)

Character death; Nope, no one dies at all

Knocked out Yep, Willow, Xander (and Parker)

Women good/men bad; The first thing the cavemen do is find a pair of pretty girls and drag them back to their 'cave'. Buffy's mooning after Parker does her no favours, he's treated her badly so she still wants him? When it comes to Parker and Buffy I always wonder what if the roles were reversed, if Buffy dumped Parker and then when she changes her mind and tries to apologise he knocks her out? What would we think then? And in fairness Parker does go to help Willow when the cavemen attack.

Kinky dinky; Is it just me or does anyone else deep down want Parker to succeed in 'jumping Willow's bones'? And then mid-coitus she should turn the tables on him American Pie style. "Say my name bitch!". Also Willow seems to think that Buffy had group sex with the 4 students, love the way her mind works! Buffy calls herself a slut, Veruca thinks Willow is a groupie.

Calling Captain Subtext; Willow tells Parker she's 'Tired of you men and your manliness'. CaveBuffy thinks Xander smells nice

Guantanamo Bay; Parker tries to apologise to Buffy so she bashes him over the head with a lump of wood

Where's Dawn? Apparently Joyce always said beer was evil which is weird when you see teenage Joyce in Band Candy and considering she wanted Buffy to be at a college with boys and keg parties?

Questions and observations; Quite possibly the worst ever episode of Buffy although rewatching it is does have some quite good humour in it and SMG gives a tremendous performance as Cavegirl Buffy. Feels like an ep of Charmed. Again, not sure about Parker, he doesn't actually do anything wrong, he just doesn't want a relationship with her as he explains to Willow (in many ways he reminds me of Barney from 'How I Met Your Mother'). Willow compares Veruca to Faith (not a compliment in her book) Oz's growing attraction to her is clear to see.

Marks out of 10; 4/10

Dumb Bars
TuDiosEsMiBastardo11 February 2009
Ivan Jelisic is right but he's being too good on this episode... It is not just boring and that its plot is reduced to revenge ain't the worth...

Willow, Buffy and Xander speaking 'bout relationships is a look at an -censored-hole's -censored-brain concept of what makes up a relationship.

Buffy's fixation on a one night stand betrays her strong persona that copes with bigger deals.

The way Xander is intimidated by implying that simple words are hard to understand because they are long makes Xander even more the fool.

Why the hell Xander showed a no-smoking sign to the only girl that seemed interested? The fact that the show offs were meant to be intelligent by saying nonsense is another give away...

Not to forget the lame version of cavemen that they all make... They are lame feigning intelligence, the are lame feigning wildness...

Bottomline? This episode alone makes the whole series seem garbage... Nonetheless Tracey Forbes is responsible for few episodes in the series so one could think again... Bu I do wonder... What kind of hole grows in her brain and suck all bits of intelligence? Sad thing that I couldn't rate this episode with 0 stars if I wanted to rate it... The worst thing I've seen in TV fiction.

Loved it!
smilesinherdreams27 May 2013
I honestly don't understand why everyone who reviewed this episode rated it so badly. I found myself laughing harder than I have laughed in quite some time. I really enjoyed seeing an episode with more laughter and fun in it. It was nice to have a break from the usual darkness that is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and to have some, well let's say relatively normal college happenings. I thought Sarah Michelle Gellar did a wonderful job and absolutely loved the ending where Parker guy finally gets a good thump on the head. I seriously recommend, I also really enjoyed the scene where Willow let's Parker have it. Great episode all around.

This episode I avoid when watching back through seasons of BTVS. Buffy as a cavewomen is annoying. I did not like the Parker Buffy love story. She was way more caught up with him than with Angel. I did not find this episode funny

I must admit I love this episode
nightwishouge16 April 2021
The premise of Beer Bad has Buffy and some newfound fratboy mates drinking beer and turning into neanderthals. If it was played for drama it would be dumb. It's not. It's played for laughs. And it's very funny.

I mean, come on. How can you not love the image of Buffy spinning around and around in a rolling chair? I love the idea that Sarah Michelle Gellar showed up to work and was directed to talk like a cave woman and freak out over television. And she commits admirably to the performance, silly as it is. What's wrong with being silly every now and again?

Xander is also great in this episode. I love how he romanticizes his job as a bartender. His interactions with the frat boys, in which they talk down to him because he is not a college student, represents his larger feelings of aimlessness and lack of worth compared to his friends. Even so, he's completely devoted to his friendship with Buffy. In my head, at least, he's over his romantic feelings for her by now and just wants to be a good friend. I really enjoy seeing the core Scoobies just being there for each other, no matter what. Unfortunately I feel we get less and less of this dynamic as the show goes on. Maybe that's why I vastly prefer seasons 1-3 to anything that follows.

Like yes maybe they were trying to get some kind of anti-drinking message across, but it was still funny and just like any other episode of Buffy.

The Forgiveness of Buffy
claudio_carvalho29 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
While missing Parker, the broken-hearted Buffy goes to the Bronze, where Xander is working as a bartender, and joins the group of four arrogant students, drinking beer with them to forget her passion. However, the owner of the bar used a warlock spell on the beer, transforming the drinkers in cavemen as a payback for their behaviors. The wild men threaten Willow, Parker and two girls and put fire on the bar, and Buffy tries to save them.

"Beer Bad" is a funny episode of Buffy, having lots of humor. The transformation of the nasty students in prehistorical men is hilarious, and I liked the response of Buffy to Parker's request of forgiveness, which is very simple and effective. The reaction of Willow to Parker talk is also memorable. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Cerveja Má" ("Bad Beer")

The One Where Buffy Turns Into A Cavewoman...
taylorkingston17 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's very funny. It confused me the first time I saw it, but now I get it.

In this episode, Buffy decides to let loose and hangs out with a couple of guys at the local bar. She gets drunk with them, of course, but I don't mind, she's allowed to have a good time. She gets drunk, but not like people normally do. She seems to have turned into a prehistoric cave woman. She is impressed by shiny things and the television, and all of her friends are wondering what happened. The men she was drinking with grow those weird eyebrow ridges, as they have turned into cavemen. They all start destroying things, and are obsessed with fire. We find out that the person who "spiked" their drinks was the bartender. He was using magic to infuse his homemade bear, with something that caused this weird phenomenon.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10.

Great fun ! Love it
nicofreezer24 May 2022
"Beer Bad" is a loot of fun, I love that Xander is a barman, i love all the comedy stuff about it. These kind of episode are vital to a show, to change the Pace with more serious episodes.

Can recognise a great show on the way it can change from one episode to another and still beiing good. Like The X files, Buffy is capable of giving us comedy episode, drama, sometime romance episodes, action one, weird one, thats why a show is great.

When a show is not confident enough, it just stay every single episodes with the same stuff, like criminals Minds or NCIS, boring show because its always the same story with just a few things changing from one episode to another.
