Oz's return
katierose29527 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Except for a cameo in Willow's dream over on "Restless," this is the last episode that features Oz. As I've said in earlier reviews, I have a real soft spot for Oz and Willow. I think that they're just adorable together and I'm sad to see him go. However, Tara's here now and I like her a lot, too. "New Moon Rising" isn't about Oz, so much as it's about Willow and her new feelings for Tara. Tara and Willow have a deep connection to each other than will be explored further in the seasons to come. This is the first episode that really shows their love and commitment. You really shouldn't skip it if you plan on watching any of seasons five, six or seven, because Tara and Willow's relationship will play an important part in what's to come.

"New Moon Rising" revolves around Oz's return to Sunnydale. He comes home and tries to pick up right where he left off with Willow. He's overcome his werewolf-ness and is ready to start his life again. Willow is torn. She loves Oz, but her new feeling for Tara are real and deep and she can't just let Tara go. Buffy, meanwhile, is angry when Riley dismisses human/supernatural-being relationships as wrong. She hasn't told him that Angel's a vampire and she's afraid about reaction. When Willow explains her romantic problems to Buffy, Buffy realizes for the first time that Willow is gay. It makes her uncomfortable, but Willow is her best friend so Buffy quickly overcomes her initial "wiggens" and supports Willow.

Oz, meanwhile, runs into Tara in UC Sunnydale's hallway and sense that she's hiding something. He quickly deduces that Tara and Willow are more than just friends. The idea that Willow now loves someone else sends Oz into a werewolf state. He chases Tara into a classroom, where the Initative finally capture him. They take Oz away for experimentation, as Tara hurries to to Willow what happened. The Scoobies decide to rescue Oz. Fortunately, Spike has been cutting a deal with Adam. The demon-robot-human cyborg-guy wants Spike on his team. He promises to remove Spike's chip if Spike will help him deal with the Slayer. In an effort to gain Buffy's trust and set her up for later, Spike agrees to lead the Scoobies into he Initative to find Oz. Riley, upon discovering that Oz is a friend of Buffy's, begins to rethink his earlier demons=evil stereotypes. He tries to help Oz escape, but is arrested by the Initative. The Scoobies and Spike then have to break-out Riley and Oz. The episode ends with Oz leaving town again, Riley hiding out from the Iniatative, Buffy finally telling him that she dated a vampire, and Willow and Tara admitting their love for each other.

There are some good parts to this episode. It's introduces Miss Kitty Fantastico, who will be discussed right up until "End of Days" in season seven. The episode also forces Riley to confront that his "demon's bad/human's good" philosophy is too narrow and restrictive. The lines between heroes and villains are become harder to see. As the Buffyverse progresses there is a continuing theme that human's are sometimes that worst demons out there. (This is especially clear in seasons 5 & 6 of BTVS and anytime poor Angel has to deal with Wolfram and Hart over on "Angel.") In "New Moon Rising" Riely goes from a "bigot" to an "anarchist," because he can now see the shades of gray in the supernatural continuum. Also, I like that Spike is the reason that Oz gets rescued in this episode. Granted he's trying to get the Scoobies to trust him so he can help Adam split them up, but still, he gets the job done.

On the downside, I think that Oz explanation on how he overcome his werewolf-ness is sort of lame. Charms and Tibetian monks seems like kind of a cop-out.

My favorite part of the episode: Oz and Willow's talk in the van at the end. It mirrors their first van conversation back in season two's "Innocence," where Willow realized that she had real feelings for Oz. In this episode, their talk is about saying good-bye. When Willow whispers that she'll always feel like Oz is a part of her, it's easy to remember all the cute, sweet, real parts their relationship and get a little misty eyed that it's over now.

The Return of Oz
Tweekums30 September 2019
Things have been quiet lately for Buffy and the gang... surely a sign that a greater evil is plotting something. The surprise that comes isn't from something evil but the return of an old friend: Oz. This presents emotional problems for Willow; she has been getting closer to Tara for some time but still has feelings for Oz. The next night is a full moon, during which Oz demonstrates to Willow that he has learnt to control his inner wolf. While they talk all night an Initiative team is attacked by a wolf-like demon. Later it becomes clear that Oz hasn't totally tamed the wolf and he is captured by the initiative. Buffy plans to break him out and Adam makes contact with Spike.

This episode may not have featured lots of fighting evil creatures; instead it provided a character driven emotional story. It was great to see Oz again; this led to major character development for Willow. It has been clear for some time that she and Tara are very close; finally it is made clear that they are together as a couple... something that surprises Buffy and triggers a dangerous response from Oz. The various conversations explain what Oz was up to since leaving Sunnydale. Spike's dealings with Adam suggest interesting things to come. The regular cast is on fine form; Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson standing out as Willow and Tara in some emotional scenes. Seth Green's return as Oz is also to be welcomed; he impresses in the role, bringing a vulnerability to the character... and not just when he is captured. Overall a good, emotional episode with some great character development.

Affected By Love
claudio_carvalho20 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In the full moon, Oz returns to Sunnydale and spends the night with Willow telling that he was healed of the wolf thing in Tibet, using meditation, drinking some teas and using some charms. Willow has no courage to tell him her relationship with Tara. When Oz finds that Tara and Willow are in love, he becomes upset, loses control and transforms in a werewolf, being captured by the Initiative. Riley tries to help him, but is arrested. Meanwhile, Spike closes an agreement with Adam, and guides the Scooby group to the Initiative to release Oz and Riley.

"New Moon Rising" is another great episode of the Fourth Season, where the love of Willow and Tara is finally disclosed. In the previous episodes, there was insinuation of their relationship, and it was quite obvious, but now Willow tells Buffy the truth. The situation of Riley, considered a traitor by the Initiative, seems to become complicated for the next episodes and the evil plot of Adam now has a powerful allied, Spike. My vote is nine.

Endings and Beginnings
ossie8518 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Oz returns to Sunnydale and tries to patch things up with Willow, but Willow is confused as she is just getting into a relationship with Tara. Oz reveals that he can now control the wolf, but when it accidentally comes out The Initiative take him. Riley is left with the choice - The Initiative or Oz. Adam also recruits Spike to help him in his plan.

Why It's So Good - Alyson Hannigan is fantastic in this role, as she grapples with old and new feelings. You can't go home again, and Oz just has to live that no matter hard he tries, he can't mend the trust he lost. Love them both, and love Tara.

Watch Out For - Adam's a boy scout?

Quote - "Good, 'cause you were such a s*** before" - Willow about Oz.

Return to OZ

Warning: Spoilers
Oz is back claiming to be able to control his werewolf side and wants to win Willow back. Yet Willow has moved on with Tara and feels a struggle of where her heart belongs. Oz has come back redeemed which I appreciated after his last appearance giving closure to his fans and I find it sweet that Willow is still the apple of his eye instead of their relationship never meaning anything at all. It also advanced his werewolf abilities as he's able to control when he changes so he won't be a danger to society making him a full member of the scoobies again. In a way I wish Willow has chosen Oz because it was like a fairy tale and each others first love, but another side likes Tara. It really plays with your heart as she must choose between them as both suitors are interesting, sweet and seem like the perfect fit. Yet oz still has trouble when he's angry making it clear he has more soul searching to do and will become a better man away from Sunnydale.

Another aspect is Riley learning not all monsters are evil. He gets to know Oz as a person so when his bosses take him in he has to chose loyalty to them or to his girlfriend. Riley actually defies orders with the knowledge its what's inside that counts and the initiative are biased in who is worth saving or not.

Sorry Oz, she's with Tara
Joxerlives18 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Oz is back and not before time, it's all wonderful. No matter how big a Tara fan you are you've got to adore the Willow/Oz goodbye scene

The Bad; The werewolf makeup still stupid, thankfully the last time we'll see it.

Best line; Riley; "No sir, I'm an anarchist"

Women good/men bad; Oz's jealousy of Willow/Tara brings out his more animal nature.

Jeez!; The Initiative experimenting on Oz

Kinky dinky; Riley has now acquired a double bed and Buffy now sleeps in one of his shirts. Buffy imagines that Willow and werewolf Oz have had sex?

Calling Captain Subtext; Buffy's reaction to the news of Will and Tara is a little freaked, interesting that she'll later vent on Riley due to his anti-demon stance (hasn't told him about Angel yet). Compensating through guilt? Buffy remarks about the uncontrollable nature of love, presaging her relationship with Spike. Spike notes that Buffy is a 'whiny little thing' but always wins. So what exactly do Willow and Tara get up to when the candle goes out? Only fanfic can tell! That said Willow never says to Oz 'We can't be together any more because I'm gay', in fact she seems to hold out the offer that they could possibly get back together if circumstances changed so more bi than gay. Xander obviously glad to see Oz back.

Guantanamo Bay; Riley finally rebels against the Initiative

Where's Dawn? What's Dawn's attitude to Oz? I suspect she was a fan although she also loves Tara.

Apocalypses; 5,

Scoobies in bondage: Oz tied up by the Initiative Buffy: 8 Giles: 4 Cordy: 5 Will: 3 Jenny: 1 Angel: 4 Oz: 2 Faith: 3 Joyce: 1 Wes: 1

Scoobies knocked out: Oz againx2 Buffy: 15 Giles: 10 Cordy: 6 Xander: 8 Will: 5 Jenny: 2 Angel: 6 Oz: 5 Faith: 1 Joyce: 2 Wes: 1

Kills: Buffy: 79 vamps, 27 demons, 6 monsters, 3 humans, 1 werewolf, 1 spirit warrior & a robot Giles: 5 vamps, 1 demon Cordy: 3 vamps, a demon Will: 4 vamps Angel: 3 vamps, 1 demon, 1 human Oz: 3 vamps, 1 zombie Faith: 16 vamps, 5 demons, 3 humans Xander: 5 vamps, 2 zombies, a demon, a demon Anya: a demon Riley; 12 vamps + 6 demons

Scoobies go evil: Giles: 1 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 1 Angel: 1 Oz: 1 Joyce: 1 Xander: 2

Alternate scoobies: Buffy: 6 Giles: 3 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 2 Joyce: 2 Xander: 3

Recurring characters killed: 7 Jesse, Flutie, Jenny, Kendra, Larry, Snyder, Professor Walsh

Sunnydale Death toll; I figure must be around 60?

Total number of scoobies: 7 Giles, Xander, Willow, Buffy, Anya, Riley and Tara attending her first Scooby meeting

Xander demon magnet: 5 Preying Mantis Lady, Inca Mummy Girl, Drusilla, VampWillow, Anya (arguably Buffy & Faith with their demon essences?)

Scoobies shot: Riley is about to shoot Oz although unless it's loaded with silver bullets you wonder would his pistol affect him? The Initiative guys surround Riley and Oz, surely if they opened fire they'd kill each other too? Giles: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 4

Notches on Scooby bedpost: I think we should add Tara to the list for Willow especially as Oz notes Willow's scent is 'all over' Tara. Giles: 2; Joyce & Olivia, possibly Jenny Cordy: 1? Buffy: 3; Angel, Parker, Riley Angel: 1;Buffy Joyce: 1;Giles, possibly Ted Oz: 3; Groupie, Willow & Verucca Faith:2 ;Xander, Riley Xander: 2; Faith, Anya Willow: 2;Oz and Tara

Questions and observations; The entrance of Connor Farrell, a great actor from Sex and the City, From the Earth to the Moon and especially an obscure old series I used to enjoy called Dark Skies (anyone else remember it? they used to show it very late on C4, basically history from a UFO conspiracists POV). In case anyone doesn't know William Boroughs wrote surrealist novel The Naked Lunch and accidentally shot his wife through the head. Adam was a Boy Scout. So, a werewolf CAN control it's impulses? Maybe Buffy and co should tell Nina that on Angel? (wouldn't you love Oz to turn up in Angel S6/Buffy S8?) Now according to Keith Toppings book the events of 5x5 occur AFTER this ep. Willow and Tara discuss Miss Kitty. Last mention of Devon. Anya displays her computer skills for the first time. McNamara is the name of Kennedy's defence secretary who is widely blamed for the failure of the Vietnam War and who died just this week.

On my 2009 Buffy calender there's a great picture of Tara and Oz with Willow in the middle. Tara's holding Willow's arm and Will's looking at Oz who looks as if he's about to form an expression as if to say "Sorry babe, I'm with her". I don't think it's a scene from the show but it's a peach of pic.

Marks out of 10; 8/10

The logical sequel to « Wild at Heart ».
m-4782630 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Where the Wild Things are, is a fine episode. It's funny, creepy, has a great soundtrack, and the analogy of the monster, echoes its frat boy party theme. New Moon Rising, is the moving on stage, following a painless breakup. The Willow character can be lucky to have known such great loves, fitting perfectly these two stages of her life. There are several similarities between her and Buffy's evolution. Only Tara has more substance than Riley, who's clearly Buffy's transition guy. It was a much needed episode, which only downside, is that it's the last we'll be seeing of a werewolf in the series. Which is true shame I think, because this season finally got its aesthetic right. The ending scenes lead to next episode's event, Angel's return. And Willow finally sorting out this bizarre love triangle. Bringing acceptance and piece of mind to all parties involved. How long before grey Willow is reunited with Oz, again?...

The One Where Oz Returns...
taylorkingston3 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy this episode. I loved seeing Oz back, but sadly, after this episode, he doesn't appear again.

In this episode, Oz returns to Sunnydale with some news for Willow: that he now can control his werewolf side, and he doesn't have to turn on the nights of the full moon. Oz gets jealous of Willow's relationship with Tara, accidentally starts to turn in front of Tara. The Initiative captures Oz and Riley tries to convince them to release him, but he doesn't have much luck. And he gets thrown in "jail" for it. Buffy and the gang break in and force them to release Oz, using their boss as leverage.

Best part of the episode: When Oz walks into Giles' house and everyone stares at him.

Worst part of the episode: When The Initiative capture Oz.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.

God they did Oz so dirty in this episode. Don't get me wrong, I love Tara and Willow but Willow and Oz just has my heart. I've hated the way they changed Oz after Veruca was introduced. I know I know nature of the wolf and all but honestly.
