Sally's always saying she'd take ANY man...so what gives here?!
planktonrules15 December 2023
The deli delivery guy, Bert (Sid Melton), is interested in Sally. He brings her a rose and invites her to go to a play, but she isn't interested. Later at work, Sally pretends she has a headache just so she doesn't need to deal with Bert. It's odd, as both are lonely people...and Bert seems so sincere.

In some ways, this is a very odd episode. After all, again and again, Sally has said she wants a man to marry her.... ANY man. But when she has a guy profess his love, she's uninterested. Of course, Bert isn't handsome but her behavior towards him seems very inconsistent and to me is a sign that the writing could have been better. Overall, a rather sad episode...not terrible but one that left me a bit disappointed.

Amusing, then sad.

Warning: Spoilers
The first half, and best part, is when Laura goes to see the play 'Waiting for an Armadillo'. A great knock on Off Off Broadway plays in Greenwich Village--great details: the usherette all in black, the watermelon, the unseen play with Carl Reiner's voice. The second half is just plain sad. But true, in that there are people like Sid Monker, so this episode is another sample of the Dick Van Dyke Show showing real how people really are.

A poignant episode spotlighting Sally

Warning: Spoilers
In his wonderful _The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book_ (if you're a fan of the show, buy this book!), Vince Waldron offers a brief plot summary -- "Sally discovers that she's got an unlikely admirer when the deli man starts dropping off flowers along with her pastrami sandwich."

I can't think of another episode of TDVDS that ends on such a bittersweet note. It could could bring a tear to the eye of the hardest-boiled cynic. In a major switch for her character, Rose Marie allows us a glimpse of the loneliness behind wisecracking Sally's brash facade.

Her kindness toward deli guy Bert Monker (played by Sid Melton, the 60's era go-to guy for a shortish, lippy little Brooklynite) is a model for a gentle let-down of a sweet but completely unsuitable suitor.

Fans of Rose Marie should not miss this uncharacteristically tender performance.
