Hilarity Abounds When Wilma Gets a Commercial Gig Singing About a 'Chubby Hubby' at Fred's Expense
lmarquise-646-27941827 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The Flinstone's episode 'THE HAPPY HOUSEHOLD' is one of the best in the series, as noted by Rosie O'Donnell who used it very successfully in her early stand-up routines, which I saw in the 80's at The Comedy Store. (She did it conjunction with a great bit on how long the Flinstones living room must have been since whenever Fred ran across it with his 'twinkle toes', it lasted forever as he flew past the repeating background of COUCH - LAMP - CHAIR - COUCH - LAMP - CHAIR....) The show and episode is certainly not an attack on feminism (? !), as one 'reviewer' here wrote, but actually gives Wilma a chance to have some fun at Fred's expense. (I say 'reviewer' lightly because said scribe DIDN'T EVEN GET THE LYRICS RIGHT, which as a die-hard Flintstone's fan about sends me over the bend.) Let's remember, this was the early 60's, when 'housewives' had to get their fun in more subtle and subversive ways. (BTW- using a cartoon show to rant like a kook about one's anti-woman political agenda is not only pathetic, but certainly takes all the FUN out of the show.) So let's get back to it...

What really makes the episode great is the SONG Wilma has to sing for The Happy Housewife TV show commercial. The jingle is really catchy and funny as it pokes fun at Fred's bulbous form while advertising a big beefy meal that'll pack on the pounds. Wilma gets to 'tease' Fred about this under the pretense of it being a JOB she had to do, and that someone else wrote the jingle, not HER!. Add to this the animation of Wilma frantically going through the directors crazy motions, singing the song over and over again, while Fred watches at home getting more and more steamed about it, and you have some hilarious fun that you can JOIN IN! The jingle is sung so many times that, yes, you are downright invited to sing along!

First, the importance of getting crucial information, like lyrics, correct. Wilma sings:

MAKE YOUR HOBBY, HUBBY / KEEP YOUR HUBBY HAPPY / WHEN HE'S A LITTLE CHUBBY / HE'S THE HAPPY PAPPY / WITH ROCKENSCHPEEL!

You can imagine how this gets under Fred's collar (literally, since it's the only modern detail in his costume). He sits down to enjoy the show, while begrudgingly eating the TV dinner left for him, and progressively becomes more and more unglued while feeling the butt of the joke. Poor Fred! You even feel a little sorry for him, but, he is getting a bit of what he deserves for being a blow-hard to Wilma too often, so it's okay to laugh and join in.

In the end, she decides that the work is too hard and the director exasperating. She goes home to 'comfort' poor Fred, who is just beside himself with feeling teased and humiliated like a little chubby schoolboy.

That's the saving grace at the end. The point is made, not mean or personally, and we all get to enjoy a little fun bringing Fred down a notch or two for his bellowing at Wilma. Then she kisses his chagrined boo-boo face to make it all better so they can rub noses again. (Much in the style of The Honeymooners after Alice shows Ralph what a boob he's been. (The Honeymooners being very influential in the character sketches and ideas in The Flintstones).

The theme of The Happy Household is that remembering to be kind and sensitive to each others feelings is what makes it so.

Make your hubby happy, keep your hubby happy!

Warning: Spoilers
This review is for another one of my favorite episodes of The Flintstones, entitled The Happy Household from Season 2, written by Warren Foster, Mike Maltese and Arthur Phillips. John Stephenson plays the pushy TV agent, a chef and the savvy rival Sam Rockbound. Mel Blanc plays the tough-toned Sam Mother who runs the greasy spoon diner Mother's Place. Paul Frees plays the Yiddish accented Rockenschpeel, the flamboyant Sam Bedrock and a TV announcer. Bea Benederet plays the lady at the Bedrock Employment Agency, with the Queen's English accent. Finally, Wilma's singing voice is provided by B.J. Baker. The classic Rockenschpeel jingle (as quoted in the title of this review) was written by Hoyt Curtin, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Plot summary: Wilma and Betty try to hurry home after a long trip shopping and bump into the garage door in the hurry. Fred argues with Wilma over the money spent. Wilma's defense is she wants to look nice for Fred and tells him she wants a job of her own. Fred doesn't take her seriously. The next morning, Wilma and Betty go to the Bedrock Employment Agency to look for a job. The lady gives Betty a typing test. The lady is impressed with Betty's speed, although she spells everything wrong! Wilma and Betty are later redirected to the Bedrock TV Studio. As they walk in, the agent tries putting Betty to work and tells her to sing. Betty says she can't sing but Wilma can. Wilma belts out a spirited Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey, much to the delight of Sam Rockenschpeel. So the agent asks her to sing The Happy Housewife theme and has her sign a contract for 39 weeks. Wilma tells the agent her husband won't allow it. But the agent says either she fulfill the contract or they'll sue. So Wilma asks Betty to leave a note for Fred with a frozen dinner. Fred comes home expecting a nice dinner and Barney just expects the usual "warmed over left overs." Much to his surprise, Wilma isn't home. He eats the dinner in one chew and growls loudly. Barney comes over to check up on Fred. He offers to turn on the TV to calm Fred's nerves and there's a new TV show called The Happy Housewife Show. At 1st, Fred isn't interested until he hears Wilma is the star. He sees all this delicious food Wilma has made and he gets furious. "My dinner on TV," he snaps! He goes into a fit as Wilma sings the theme and destroys the TV! Barney leaves and Fred waits like a hunter for Wilma to come home. Wilma tries sneaking in but Fred hears her and demands an explanation. So Wilma explains the whole story in tears and Fred says "Ok, 'Happy Housewife!' Fred, the Hilarious Husband is going down to the studio and cancel the contract!" Wilma warns the studio will sue. "Sue, schmoo!," Fred snaps and leaves. So Wilma waits for Fred to come back with Barney and Betty in tow. Fred says "Finally, I won- 2 out of 3 points!" They agree not to sue or have Fred fired from his job on one condition. "Wilma keeps right on being the happy Housewife!" Betty agrees to feed Fred home-cooked meals. But it doesn't last long. Fred critiques Betty's cooking and is quickly shown the door by Betty! So Fred comes across a restaurant called Mother's Place. He walks in and a gravelly voiced poker faced tough guy named Sam Mother greets him. Fred orders a hot brontosaurus sandwich without gravy. Sam shouts out " One HB- dry!" And just like that, Sam brings it and snaps "Here ya are, Mac. One hot Bronto sandwich- no gravy!" Then Sam turns on the TV and Fred is trying to eat his leather-like Bronto sandwich-. Unfortunately, The Happy Housewife Show is on. And when Fred hears Wilma singing "Make your hubby happy," he attacks Sam and destroys his TV set. Barney gets a call from Fred in jail. Betty overhears the conversation and thinks Fred has struck his own mother. Barney tries explaining "Mother" is Sam Mother but at no avail. Meanwhile, Sam Bedrock calls up his rival Sam Rockbound and asks him if he's seen The Happy Housewife Show and rubs in "You're being clobbered!" So Sam Rockbound goes to the Flintstones and asks Fred how he feels about being the husband of the star of The Happy Housewife Show. Fred is more than willing to vent! Sam Rockbound calls back Sam Bedrock and says he's planned a new rival show called Neglected Husband! So Sam Bedrock promises to cancel Happy Housewife immediately. Wilma is escorted in the middle of the program and an announcement is made about the show's cancellation. Fred comes home, full of glee and his Happy Housewife Wilma treats him to a feast while serenading the theme "When he's a little chubby, he's a happy pappy!" What I liked: I liked Paul Frees' voicework, especially the voice of Mr. Rockenschpeel. I also liked Barney's teasing Fred "Sorry, but there were no more warmed over left overs to be warmed over, left over!" Fred imitates Barney's hiccuoy laugh! As Wilma comes home shopping, she's able to fit a load larger than the compact car into the trunk of the car! I also liked some of the musical cues used, many from the show Top Cat. The Happy Housewife theme was previously used in a Yogi Bear cartoon but is still darn catchy! The scene where Wilma bites Fred's finger would be re-used in Season 6's The Story Of Rocky's Raiders. Yes, Fred is short-tempered and lacks patience and understanding with Wilma but it all ends happily in the end. I give this 10 HB's dry out of 10! There's also a commentary of this episode in the Season 2 DVD package worth seeking out. And if you're lucky enough to have a spouse to take care of your needs, be sure to thank them!
