No good deed goes unpunished!

In this installment of "Four Star Playhouse", Dick Powell plays Eddie--a smarty pants taxi driver. While he was extremely sarcastic and sounds very jaded, he really is a good guy at heart--though for a while the viewer isn't so certain! This is taken to the limit with a cab fare...a rich guy who is miserable because his wife his dumped him. After taking the guy home, the man sees the lady and argues with her and then gets back in the cab...demanding the cab driver drives him to the MIDDLE of a bridge so he can jump! Well, the cabbie is so clever and jaded that he agrees to do it and acts like it's no skin off his nose if the guy jumps...provided he STILL pays his fare!

This is a very good episode of the series for two big reasons. Dick Powell is great and the show is different...really, really different. I can't for the life of me recall seeing anything like it and it's well written to boot. If you are interested in seeing it, the show is available along with many others from the series, for free download at archive.org.

Not what he was expecting

Dick Powell stars in this half hour drama from his Four Star Playhouse anthology series. He plays a most cynical cab driver almost like if Philip Marlowe stopped being a detective and was driving a cab to pay the bills.

Bills are a part of what comes up in conversation with William Johnstone who is a passenger most despondent over his wife leaving him.

Johnstone asks Powell to take him to the middle of the bridge so he can end it all. Powell takes him up on it, but he wants his fare first and foremost.

What happens afterward is for you to see, the dialog between Powell and Johnstone is really a treat for the ear.
