Fascinating contrast between today's and yesterday's attitudes .

Gomer is very sweet and sincere to Pippa Scott but by today's standards he's terribly sexist. Gomer assumes that she wants all this feminine treatment, but today we realize that everyone is an individual.

Warning: Spoilers
I usually love the old TV shows like Gomer Pyle, Andy Griffith, and Leave it to Beaver, among others because their morality messages are timeless. But this episode does not stand the test of time. As a retired Navy officer, this episode always rankles me, as it teaches the wrong lesson. The lesson this episode teaches is that a female military member is a female first and a military member second. This is not how it works nor should it. The Captain tries to teach Gomer this lesson, as does Sgt Carter, but unfortunately, the terribly derogatorily named "Captain Ironpants" succumbs to being treated as a "lady" by a junior enlisted Marine.

That being said, Gomer's innocence and kindness is heartwarming.
