Friendly Freddy's Freaky Suits

Sgt. Carter has to be an usher at a big fancy wedding and he needs a dark blue suit to do so. He sees Gomer Pyle wearing a brand new dark blue suit and is very impressed. When he hears the price he's impressed even more. But then when he hears that Gomer bought the suit from Friendly Freddy he's not impressed at all. Because Friendly Freddy always sells them junk. But Carter is desperate and so he takes the bait and buys the suit, despite having just lectured his Marines about being careful with their payday money. Shakespeare could write a play about Sgt. Carter and Friendly Freddy. This wasn't written by Shakespeare so we'll have to take what we can get.

As you can imagine things don't go as planned. The suit falls apart at the wedding. Oops. And Gomer's suit makes both him and his "girlfriend" sneeze like crazy. They go back to Freddy to get some satisfaction.

That's the set up. I won't spoil the rest.

I was trying to remember about any wardrobe malfunctions that I had in my lifetime beside splitting my pants in a sledding accident. Sargent Carter (Frank Sutton) has a dilemma. He needs a dark suit for an upcoming wedding. Corporal Boyle (Roy Stuart) suggest he wears his Marine blues but Carter doesn't want to be garish, stand out being an usher. It's the weekend at Camp Pendleton and that means payday and leave for the troops for a day on the town.. Sargent Carter gives his usual speech about getting taken by street vendors and their shoddy merchandise. Friendly Freddie (Sid Melton) parked on a side street with a station wagon full of suits and slacks sees Gomer coming his way. Freddy talks Gomer into trying on a suit,( at no obligation of course.) In truth Freddy is pushing his sub standard wares to Gomer. Next scene shows Gomer in his barracks sharply dressed in a dark suit.. Sargent Carter (Frank Sutton), who is impressed by the clothing and the price of only $39.95. Carter rushes over to Freddie with station wagon full of clothing and you guessed it, tries on a nice sharp comfortable suit," 40 stout", courtesy of the service station washroom. Whats to follow will pull the threads out of you. My personal favorite of that series. FYI, Sid Melton co-starred on the Danny Thomas Show, "Make Room for Daddy" as his personal Manager Charlie Halper. That show spawned the Andy Griffith Show when Danny was caught speeding through Mayberry by Sheriff Andy Taylor. Jim Nabors played a role in the show as the simpleton gas station mechanic Gomer Pyle which gave the spin-off to Gomer Pyle USMC. A long connection.
