Jonathan White and Larry D. Mann
kevinolzak17 August 2016
"The Coward" takes place at a settlement threatened by the Iroquois, starving them out of provisions and ammunition. Will Morgan (Norman Ettlinger, first of two) enlists his son Tom (Jonathan White, first of two) to accompany him to the capitol for help, despite the fears of wife Sarah (Kathleen Kidd), who has already lost one son to the frontier and doesn't want to lose the other. A surprise attack by Iroquois puts father and son in a precarious position, and when Will is felled by an arrow to the leg he is stunned to see Tom flee in terror. The timely arrival of Hawkeye and Chingachgook prevents any further injury, but the whole community brands the young man a coward including guard Jim Perkins (Stan Francis, second of three). Trading post owner Simmons (Larry D. Mann, first of three) provides Hawkeye and his Mohican friend what few provisions he can to make the dangerous trek themselves, only for Tom to join them, unwilling to remain behind to be shunned. The Iroquois wait in several places, and in time Tom shows himself not to be the coward he thought he was after Chingachgook also becomes wounded in the leg. Lon Chaney's character sums it up nicely: "all brave men afraid sometime." Though not such a familiar face, Larry D. Mann remained busy on television for many decades, especially so in cartoon voice-over work.
