The Taylors' closet is so full of crap, some of the most gaudy, embarrassing, outdated clothes you could imagine...most of which were Jill's. So Tim gives her an ultimatum: get rid of some of those clothes or he'll build a more-power closet. Under the threat of having a giant hole in the wall, Jill begins rummaging. On to Fool Time where the topic of discussion is tool boxes. Tim boasts that his small, silver tool box if well organized, but Al claims his big red one is the textbook definition of organized...and it's bigger than Tim's. Yeah, that's not the only thing of Al's that bigger than Tim's.... I'm of course talking about brains, you sickos. Anyway, a big tool box is required for being Tim Taylor's assistant. This is the Mary Poppins model, as not only will it hold bandages, ice packs and tourniquets, but also crutches and an I.V. unit. There was probably a stretcher in there too somewhere. Meanwhile, Brad takes the manly approach to a troublemaker at school by employing fisticuffs. As a result, he's given a note that he must give to his parents to sign. Randy suggests the old art of trickery: place a field trip permission slip over the note from school, so they'll think they're signing that instead. As for Tim, he's ready to take a sledgehammer to that closet and give it a good overhaul. He even went ahead and ordered Jill a big-ass modular Jetsons closet system. Jill opts for the ladies' model, but Tim refuses to have a fruity closet in his house. This is gonna take a while.
They head upstairs to argue about the closet some more, Tim going on a tirade about how little Jill took OUT, seeing as how she has an outfit for ever, single, conceivable occasion. Then they wrestle, all giggling and smiles. Brad sees this as the opportune time to pass that little disguised note on for them to sign. They see right through the ploy and discover the truth about Brad punching another boy. He says it Tim's fault...channeling his mother, I see. Actually, it was because Tim hugged Brad when he dropped him off at school, and this boy made fun of him for it. So after the boys and Tim wrestle in the backyard, Tim makes a crack about hugging Brad, who takes great offense to it, he talks about it with Wilson, who mentions different ways in which men show affection, as not all of them prefer the same methods. It's also a feeling of security, which Tim decides to put to the test on the next Tool Time, where Rock, Pete and Dwayne from K&B appear to help with the project. Tim broaches the question of hugging another man, and the only one willing to attempt it was Rock. At home, Tim and Brad have a father- son talk about the whole hugging thing, and he'll hold back on hugs, but he will still tell his son he loves him in public, by way of special messages, such as "how about those Lions?" With that problem out of the way, it's time to unveil the Taylors' new closet. Tim coaxes a reluctant Jill upstairs and shows her every little detail. Just to let you know, this isn't a Man's Closet, this is what you'd call a Spouse Closet. There are color-coded bins for accessories, shirts, pants and blouses on rotating racks, a potpourri lined drawer specifically for Jill's scarves, shoe turntables, and best of all, a warning system for if Jill accidentally puts her clothes with Tim's. She's turned on like a generator and jumps his bones right there in the closet.
Sure, I'd like to have that closet. One thing Home Improvement always had going for it are the creative room designs. Just goes to show what you can accomplish when you think, and act, outside the box. That whole closet premise was similar to the episode in Season 1 where Tim redoes their bathroom. And as far as guys and hugging, I think it all has to do with circumstance and context. There's a right time and a wrong time for everything. It was also funny Al was reluctant to hug Tim here, when in later episodes he just jumps right in and gives him a bear hug. And finally, I really like the K&B boys. I think they should have gotten their own spin-off. Would've been much better than Dan Aykroyd's Soul Man or Dave Chappelle's (Butt) Buddies. Rock, Pete and Dwayne were great characters, and Mickey Jones, Gary McGurk and Casey Sander had great chemistry. I'd like to think they could've carried their own show, even for at least one season. So anyway, if your closet is a mess and looks like hell, gather up some wish fulfillment and check out Bell Bottom Blues.
