Doesn't quite work out

In this In The Heat Of The Night story Shannon Ballard is having a torrid affair with Brett Rice and they plan and plant a pipe bomb that will kill her husband.

It kills another guy with hubby, but leaves her spouse in a coma that looks permanent. Now she has to care for him in order to control the assets. One of those planned things where everything goes wrong.

In the meantime Sparta has a nuisance criminal on hand, someone keeps knocking down mailboxes while driving by. David Hart has some good moments in explaining a logarhythmc theory of how this mailbox destroyer will be nabbed.

Turns out when they get one, they solve the murder.

Life has its ironies as both Howard Rollins and Carroll O'Connor realize in the end. Their final scene is classic.
