Former cop and now Assistant District Attorney Simon Oakland who married into wealth has grown tired of the wife and her strings and has decided to get rid of her without those pesky California community property laws. He tries to make it look like a burglar did it, but in doing so he turns a suspicious light on his nephew by marriage and ward Dennis Cooney. Oakland has spoiled Cooney and his late wife was rather more strict with him. He looks good for it.
But also Oakland makes a fatal mistake. He sets up an alibi involving none other than dinner with an old friend Chief Ironside. All that does is get Raymond Burr and his picked squad interested in the case.
Oakland makes an interesting adversary, one who is not so clever as he thinks. See how he's nailed in the end.
