The Love Boat takes on Sherlock Holmed
aramis-112-8048802 April 2023
Jeremy Brett, on the cusp of breaking out to worldwide acclamation as TV's consummate Sherlock Holmes, brings his peculiar talents to "The Love Boat" playing a valet. Too bad it's to Ted McGinley. Brett's tale follows the basic lines of "Ruggles of Red Gap."

Audrey Landers boards as a woman trying to find a way to cheer her glum mother (and roping in Gopher to make a fool of himself); and Vanessa Williams uses Isaac as a "beard" to keep men from bothering her.

But it's Brett who steals the show. Wonderfully underplaying his hand (if we can imagine anyone sailing in "The Love Boat underplaying), he's hilarious. He makes this the funniest cruise in a long time.

Warning: Spoilers
'Your Mr. America has just arrived.' Ace is back as ship's photographer. He's finished his course, and he knows everything about photography. Julie is still swooning. The family valet is here to serve Ace. We're welcoming Miss America winners, including Vanessa Williams. Audrey Landers is here with her mother. She intends to take care of her while on this cruise. Maybe Gopher can pretend to be an Indian prince to romance mom. What could possibly go wrong? Isaac's old High School friend is here. She's after him too. Can she keep him away from Vanessa? Glynn Turman also has his eyes set on Vanessa. How will she get him off? On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 2 1/2 * out of a possible 4 *.
