It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Warning: Spoilers
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is certainly an inspiration for The Treasure of Kalaniopu'u, and this episode is a lot of fund, just like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Anyway, here the regular characters end up chasing one million dollars in a hidden location. It's not so much the location that matters (although it's important of course), but the shifting allegiances and double-crossing and intrigue and betrayal amongst the characters as they chase the one million dollars somewhere in Hawaii.

Anyway, I'm enjoying catching up on Magnum, although I have no interest in watching the reboot at all.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to begin by wondering why the makers of this episode decided to "spoil" it by showing us the end at the beginning. I kept on hoping it would turn out to be a fake-out or that there would be a reason for it which would become clear. But neither of those was the case. They merely took away all the mystery at the very start. Crazy decision.

But that aside, this is a fun episode, although very, very silly. Nancy Stafford is absolutely priceless as the snobbish editor (or something) who finds having to oversee a treasure hunt an insulting waste of her talents. Her snide comments and high-handed manner are hilarious, as is her overacting after the false break-in. And spare a thought for poor Higgins and his beloved flowerbed.

The very, very silly part comes in... parts. First, very people seem interested in the chance to win $1 million in a treasure hunt. Then, Thomas discovers the location of the treasure without any of this clue-solving malarkey merely by reading the end of Master's book. Finally, as TC's helicopter blows the money around, not one person thinks of closing the lid of the trunk that the money's flying out of. Everyone flails uselessly at the money in the air and then jumps God-knows-how-many feet into the water below to collect floating banknotes. I think I would have stayed at the top and tried to catch notes in whatever I could; my shirt, for example (after closing the damned lid!) But then again, I can't swim so I really wouldn't have much choice.

I guess, as usual, the events of this episode will never have happened by the beginning of the next one. Otherwise, Thomas and friends will all be pretty well-off financially, which I'm sure isn't allowed. Again, though, great job, Nancy. I didn't know you could be so funny. Although I did always know you were gorgeous!
