THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Indian Affairs Affair - 1966

This is the 59th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum, plays Illya Kuryakin, Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This episode has to be seen to be believed. It is hands down the worst episode I've seen so far. The nasty THRUSH bunch are holding the Chief of the Cardiac tribe, Ted deCorcia, hostage in Oklahoma. They have a Japanese scientist, Richard Loo, hiding on the tribe's land building a miniature hydrogen bomb.

The THRUSH boss, Joe Mantell, kidnaps the daughter of the Chief to force him to help. The girl, the drop dead beautiful, Angela Dorian, is at college in NY. She works part time at a go-go club.

Well, anyways, UNCLE hears about the bomb and sends agents David McCallum and Robert Vaughn to straighten out the THRUSH types. The villains are all dressed like cowboys and the Indians are all on motorcycles.

The episode is just downright stupid. If not for the presence of knockout Miss Dorian it would be a total waste of time. Dorian would become Miss September in 1967's edition of PLAYBOY.

S2: Mostly breezy fun
bob the moo19 November 2016
The first season of this show took me a bit by surprise because I always thought I had seen it, when indeed I had not. It was interesting to see it find its feet in terms of style, tone, and character. Season 2 comes out of the box very much knowing what it wants to be, and I assume that it was already a very popular show (judging by it setting up its own spin off during this season).

Mostly the season not only gets it right, but keeps it fairly consistent. There is a cheeky sense of fun to the whole show here, but yet produces solid plots which sell themselves by virtue of being entertaining and fun. I remember some of those in the first season seemed to have overly silly plot; season two really does have many that are silly but often they work because the delivery carries the viewer along. This is not to say the season is without flaw, because there are quite a few weaker episodes, as well as some bad ones. This is notably where the plots are restricted, or overly silly, and lack the spark to make the viewer go along with them. Those with stronger villains, and with good interplay between Solo and Kuryakin, tend to be the stronger episodes; those that weaker those core formula strengths are not as good.

They are the minority though, and mostly the season is colorful breezy fun which is delivered with a sense of humor and action. Everyone seems to be on the same page and along for the ride, and this makes it easier for the viewer. Okay there are some very dated aspects, but the treatment of women is better than season 1 (mostly just in peril) even if mostly the improved treatment isn't that expanded (now they are in peril or sexy). Fun stuff though, and the tone that the recent film remake could really have done with striking.

Utter garbage for an enjoyable series

Warning: Spoilers
Trigger Alert! There is nothing more that needs to be said for this episode. The use of racist imagery and speech is bad even for a mid-Sixties era program. But that is nothing when compared to an on-screen attempted rape. This episode should be skipped, or watched only for historical or academic interest into the depiction of Natives in media. I am disappointed by this episode. Much of the rest of the season has been enjoyable fun. Even the goofier ones had more going for then than this abomination. The misfire of The Knights of the Round Table Affair looks almost stellar compared to this. How could they include an attempted rape and never mention it again? Terrible.
