Wow....Mannix gets beaten up in this one! What a shock!!!
planktonrules10 May 2013
"End of the Rainbow" begins with a guy being chased through some lonely streets at night. He tries to make a phone call but is interrupted by a guy with a gun. But, instead of shooting him, they force him into the road where he is deliberately run over to make it look like an accident. In the dead man's pocket is a matchbook with Mannix' name and number on it--so the investigating policeman phones Mannix. However, Mannix cannot identify the dead guy and is puzzled why he had his number. So, on a lark, Mannix decides to dig on his own. Soon, others related to the dead man either end up dead or attempts are made on their lives! Obviously SOMETHING is going on and Mannix is out to get to the bottom of it.

During the course of the show, you see Mannix beaten up, Mannix doing some beating up, a dame who turns out to be pure poison and a violent ending. All in all, a VERY typical sort of show for the series! Well done and, as always, entertaining.

Enjoyable episode

The other reviewer covered the plot so I won't go into it but this episode hits all the Mannix plot points that make a classic Mannix episode. Mannix has no real client - check. Mannix gets beaten up pretty good - check. After one scene, Mannix shows no effects of beating - check. Mannix gets shot out by the worse marksmen in the world - check. Mannix orders Peggy around a lot - check. Peggy manages to find all needed information in a couple of phone calls - check. Peggy really does deserve a raise - check. A good girl goes bad - check. Always good guest stars on Mannix and this is no exception. Jack Ging plays a different character here before he does 7 episodes as police Lt Ives. Kathryn Hays is wholesomely beautiful as always. She and Marti Stevens were born less than 3 weeks apart in 1933 and both are still around as of this writing. As is Jack Ging. George Savalas, (Telly's brother), has a nice part as a police sgt. Overall, a good episode with a heartfelt ending.

SIX MILLION REASONS TO DIE FOR!
tcchelsey26 January 2023
With millions of dollars at stake in a robbery, Joe has work to do... and the bodies start to pile up. Fasten your seatbelts.

Robert Friend directed this red hot to trot adventure, who worked on many westerns and in a few years would direct a popular Tarzan movie, TARZANS DEADLY SILENCE, starring Ron Ely. Joe gets bounced around a lot and all because he followed a hunch? That alone will be a common theme in the series. The question is why was an ex-con killed, and was he about to contact Joe?

I agree with the last reviewer. Joe gets beat up and where are the bandaids and arm slings? Actually, when we were kids, we never really paid attention to that angle because Mannix was like a mini battleship anyway.

Special guest star is Kathryn Hays, playing Betsy. In a few years, she would be cast on AS THE WORLD TURNS, and would remain with the show until its final episode in 2010. Hays passed in 2022.

Actress/singer Marti Stevens plays Mrs. O'Farrell. Stevens sang around the world and her claim to fame was when she ACTUALLY hid the Queen of Greece in her home who was being chased by protestors and gave her a drink! She co-starred in many episodes of the classic British soap opera EMERGENCY WARD before coming back to Hollywood. There should have been a tv movie about Marti, ya think?

Look for Telly Savalas' brother, George in a bit as a cop, a prelude to KOJAK.

To answer the notes stating there was no windshield in the Chrysler. That's because of reflection in many cases, and removing a windshield is a lot of work. It could also be done by just adjusting the angle of the car. If you watch closely, mostly older tv shows, every so often you can catch a missing windshield.

For all of us travel addicts, parts of this episode were filmed at the famous King Gillette Ranch at Calabasas, California, near Malibu. The wildlife habitat features 75,000 acres of land that includes winding roads, caves and even old missle sites! The irony behind it all is that King Gillette, who invented disposal razor blades, nearly went broke putting all his millions into real estate. But, the ranch was a WISE investment.

Recommended for thrill seekers. SEASON 2 EPISODE 5 remastered dvd box set.
