EVIDENCE, EVIDENCE. DID WE SAY EVIDENCE?
tcchelsey22 December 2023
Yes, there are a few flaws in this one, but it's still fun to watch it all come down, and with Peggy and Toby caught up in the adventure. That's what us kids back in the day loved. For that, at least 8.5 STARS.

You have to admit, the beginning of the story has an original slant. . An old colleague of Joe's tells him he believes someone is going to kill him and make it all look like an accident. Everything rings true, and now Joe is in harm's way, particularly because he has evidence connected with the case the other p.i was working on.

The mistake here is that Mannix talked to the wrong person, without giving too much away, who spilled the beans to the killers. It's also a Catch 22, of sorts, because Joe had to talk to someone (and he always does...) in order to piece a case together. This mistake is made in lots of cop shows. The story heats up when Peggy and Toby (Mark Stewart) are kidnapped, for obvious reasons.

This all underlines what I have said before, and said it when I was a kid... Peggy should have carried a gun in her purse. Even if she wasn't a crack shot, she would have surprised the living daylights out of her captors. That would have been a classic.

Bottom line, you have to watch this one through.

Always a solid cast, first and foremost Harry Townes, an unforgettable actor, playing Martin Kimbrough.

He is the right pick for this role. Likewise, Dana Elcar, who turned up quite a bit on cop shows and had some excellent supporting roles.

Our hero, Van Williams (GREEN HORNET) has a guest role, playing an executive. Long before the Green Hornet, Van was a big Warner Brothers/ABC star in SURFSIDE 6, and many other of the studios's famous productions. He gave it all up, though, to wisely invest in business and real estate. Obviously this role was created for him, because he was a shrewd businessman in real life. His best friend and neighbor was noneother than Adam West (BATMAN).

Great trivia question, folks!

Yes, I do agree with the last reviewer, the killers were not a very wise bunch. Written by John Kneubuhl, who later retired from Hollywood and returned to his native home at Pago Pago, American Samoa, where he is held in high esteem. John holds the distinction of creating one of the most famous villains in tv history, Dr. Loveless, in the WILD WILD WEST, also writing cult horror films.

Give it a faithful watch, and root for Peggy and Toby. SEASON 3 EPISODE 22 remastered CBS dvd box set.

One of the weakest episodes of the series.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is poorly crafted. The basic plot is weak and the writing makes it infinitely worse. The plot makes no sense from start to finish. Tully suspects he may be in danger and tells Mannix were he will hide the evidence (why not just hand the evidence to Joe for safe keeping?) and yet he allows himself to be whacked upside the head by two strangers? And why do they kill Tully anyway? All he had was some pictures on a roll of film. So what? Pictures taken four months after a robbery don't prove anything and even if they did it would be easier for the crook in the picture to just disappear, than to commit murder.

When Mannix finds the film, the only person he tells is Kimbrough and thus Kimbrough must have informed the crooks, yet Mannix blithely continues to trust him. All of the contortions that two of the bad guys go through at "the cabin" was wasted energy. Much simpler to just make Peggy and Toby stay in the cabin rather than the elaborate breaking and then fixing of the gas line, going fishing etc.

But the single biggest goof in the writing comes when Joe is asking Peggy if anyone was in the rental office when she was reserving the cabin. He asks her to describe the man and then says "OK that's one what about the other one?". But there was only one man at the agency, so Joe now is referring to the two men at the cabin itself, thus conflating two completely different things. This is a glaring mid-sentence continuity goof and must have come about from heavy handed last minute editing. Toby then mentions that he took a picture of one of them, Joe develops the film, decides for no apparent reason that one of the pictured men is Andrews and immediately goes to Kimbrough and spills the beans. Andrews is then murdered by his pals which again clearly indicts Kimbrough. And why did they kill Andrews this time when they had committed murder before to protect him? What a mess this episode is.

Okay episode. Just don't think about it too much

Warning: Spoilers
The two other reviewers nailed all the problems with this episode. I suppose in the fast world of TV production, they don't want it good, they want it done now. The biggest clunker is why did the bank president, Harry Townes, hire the first PI at all. He was essentially hiring a guy to find himself. Maybe a throwaway line like "The bank officials and customers demanded further action be taken." or something like that to fill in the blank. Don't know why the gang killed Dana Elcar, a fellow gang member. The murder investigation could have revealed his part in the robbery so that didn't solve the problem. The easiest solution is for the four thieves to all just disappeared and kept Townes' share for themselves. One of the surprises here is the bad guys don't bump off their queasy inside man, as in the previous Mannix episode. We never do learn where the money is at. The cast are all TV veterans. Townes (who was in everything), Elcar (also in everything and pre-McGyver), Van Williams (post-Green Hornet), Robert Pines (pre-CHIPs and father of Chris Pine), and Jay Robinson (slimy in everything). Van Williams is working too hard here but everyone else is good. Peggy in trouble once again but she doesn't know it. Not the first time and won't be the last. Joe is not shot, knocked out, or drugged but he also doesn't get paid. The satisfaction of catching his friend's killers will have to be enough.

Very good but there is a HUGE plot problem with this one.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with two goons killing a guy and making it look like an accident. You soon learn that the dead man was a private eye and had confided to Joe Mannix that he MIGHT soon die due to what he's learned on his current case. Soon, Mannix is pulled into the case when he discovers some hidden film. But, before he can take it to the police, he's informed that the gang has kidnapped Peggy and her son out at her cabin*. So, Mannix is forced to give them the film. Oddly, this DOESN'T stop the gang and the STILL seem intent on killing Mannix. What gives?!

There is a HUGE plot hole with this show and it's a shame as it's otherwise a pretty good show. It seems that the man who originally hired the first detective actually is part of the gang. No one would have known this had he not hired the detective. So why did he hire anyone in the first place?! The plot, though exciting, makes no sense when you think about it!

*The exact same thing came up TWICE in the space of only a few episodes! Yep, Peggy and her son were nearly killed while out at the vacation cabin!!!

Unbelievably appalling
pkfloydmh15 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, yet another horrendous episode of this show, which has really hit rock bottom. This is one of the worst ones I've seen yet, and keep in mind that I've seen Fly, Little One. This one is about a private detective friend of Joe's who gets killed by two thugs at his house.

This one has so many plot holes and so much stupidity it's staggering. For example, in the very first scene, why would Tully open his door to two guys he didn't know when he was already fearful that someone was out to get him??? Then, in one of the most appalling scenes I've seen on this show yet, two of the criminals confront Joe IN A POLICE STATION and start talking about their kidnapping plot OUT LOUD while police officers ARE WALKING RIGHT BY THEM. Are you kidding me??? These bozos are so stupid they give all criminals a bad name, which is very difficult to do. Then for no reason, one of the criminals reveals their whole plan to Joe while he has Joe at gunpoint. These clowns make the Three Stooges look like Einstein.

The ending makes no sense whatsoever because it was made clear a few scenes earlier that Kimbrough was not one of the criminals and was not involved in the bank heist because the criminals were clearly holding him at gunpoint and threatening him, but then suddenly at the end, it was revealed he was the mastermind of the heist. MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE, nor does his incredibly miraculous escape, where he went from BEING TIED UP AND UNABLE TO MOVE to suddenly being free A FEW SECONDS LATER. Now that's an escape that would make Houdini proud.

Then to top it all off, there's some dreadful overacting by Gail Fisher throughout the episode, which only adds to the misery.

This is an unmitigated disaster.
