MATLOCK POLICE – "Twenty Six Hours" – 1951

This is the first episode of the long running Australian Police series, MATLOCK POLICE. The series ran for 228 episodes between 1971 and 1976. The series starred, Michael Pate, Grigor Taylor, Vic Gordon and Paul Cronin as Police officers in the small rural town of MATLOCK.

The town matriarch, Shelia Florance, who owns half the town, is attacked in her home and robbed. The Police are quickly on the case and develop a list of suspects. First on the list is a local handyman, Danny Adcock. Adcock had been fired by, Florance, just the day before the robbery. He says that he was getting blotto at the pub at the time of the robbery.

Next to be questioned are four hippie type bikers camping on the edge of town. Then two bozos hunting on private lands are gobbled up for questioning. Everyone seems to have an alibi.

The Detectives, Michael Pate and Grigor Taylor head back for another talk with the victim, Miss Florance. They need a list of stolen items so they know what to look for. One of the items was a very rare bottle of brandy. The same bottle had been seen in the hands of one of the hippie types. The man, Paul Weingott, jumps on his bike and attempts to flee. He does not get far and is soon being given the third degree.

Weingott swears that he never broke into the old woman's house. 'He" stole the bottle from a parked car. Weingott leads the Police to the car. The car is searched and most of the stolen items are found. The car belongs to the two men who were hunting on private land. The two are tossed into the cells and the case is closed.

The series was still being filmed in B/W at this late date. And it looks all the better for it. Michael Pate, was an Australian actor who spent 20 years in Hollywood during the 50'and 60. He had parts in, THE COURT JESTER, HONDO, TEN TALL MEN, HOUDINI, SECRET OF THE INCAS, THE KILLER IS LOOSE and 7th CAVALRY. He was also in television series as varied as, RAWHIDE, ZORRO, BROKEN ARROW, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, THE DETECTIVES, PETER GUNN, 77 SUNSET STRIP and ROUTE 66. (b/w)
