Swedish immigrant Albert plays viola in a symphony orchestra. Trouble is his hearing is getting worse, so he's let go. Then too, the impairment is holding back his social life, especially with the Swedish girl in his citizenship class. An operation can correct the problem, but will it stay fixed and where will he get the money.
Good to see the excellent Robert Osterloh play a regular guy instead of his usual sinister type. He low-keys it here, that way we concentrate on his hearing impairment instead of his personality. Considerable time is spent on the nature of the hearing problem, with diagrams, etc. These shows are often as educational as they are dramatic. Generally, the writers excel at combining the two, as they do here. Of course, the medical science has probably progressed over the intervening years, but the problem itself likely hasn't. Also, the 30-minutes gets us to appreciate something as ordinary as street sounds, which is generally taken for granted. The entry is also a good chance to catch fashion and car styles, circa 1954. Watch too for the familiar John Larch as Albert's doctor. Anyway, it's another solid installment from a high quality series.
