Fashion Week (#1.11)

And here we are, the three finalists are getting ready for the fashion week. Tim comes to visit the three, sees where they live and how far their progress is. Then they are all back getting ready for the finale. Wendy is being mistreated again. Kara tries to cheat with the shoes. At the end #1 is Jay, #2 Kara and # is Wendy.

Having liked Jay through the competition he did irritate me with his Wendy hate. Seems like he was obsessed with it. Actually it is amazing that after all that time apart they still held that huge grudge. And Wendy didn't even do anything that bad. She was just very vocal about wanting to win. Her throwing Kevin under the bus is not comparable to Sara cheating with the shoes while pretending that she is all perfect. Not forget that Kara has said the worst things about the lack of talent of many of them which is nonsense as all who were part of the show were very talented. I am just glad Wendy stood up for herself. And I am also glad she continues to do well i hear dream of fashion. I saw some of her latest things on her website and they are beautiful.

When it comes to results, I guess I liked Wendy's the most. I am not a fashion expert but this was the one where I would wear most. So Jay insulting her about being old and not knowing what young want was wrong, as I am younger than him...But they all had some beautiful pieces in their collection. I have some issues with Kara's, just because she is too much into fur and leather which I would never wear, but other than that she had some great parts too. All together they all did it great.

Best Collection Wins

The episode starts off with Tim Gunn (head coach for the contestants) visiting each contestant in their hometown. You can see how the contestants really live, not just how they appear on the show.

Poor Jay, for instance, seems more like a loser in his tiny hometown in PA than the fun, boisterous, flamboyant character he was on the show. Jay tells Tim the town has all of a 4-10 second tour to offer, and from the footage that seems to be an accurate assessment. Doesn't help that winter makes everything snowed-in and even gloomier, either. Wendy's house looks more comely and organized. She appears nicer in her home than on the show, though she did have that awkward moment when she said her daughter drew a picture for the judges...only to have her daughter say "no, I drew it because I was bored." Ha. Kara Saun, meanwhile, appears in her hometown exactly as I imagine her; then again, her hometown is LA.

The 3 designers then arrive in New York, where there is some drama about Jay and Kara Saun having to live with Wendy. They then went to choose their models. I think this segment could have been longer - I mean, who doesn't like looking at models? It would have been entertaining to see the models interview for the positions rather than have .5 second back- to-back flashes of the models.

Then there's a showdown between Kara Saun and Wendy. Meanwhile, Jay complains about "being stuck in the middle" and does nothing. I respect Kara Saun for stepping up to Wendy and expressing her (and many, many others') honest opinion. I'm really losing respect for Jay for trying to look like he doesn't care while in reality subjugating himself to anything the producers want - (1) for instance, when he was friends with Mario but Mario was the real rebel while Jay wasn't at all; (2) when he very rudely criticized Vanessa Riley's article because she didn't have a positive opinion of the show (again, way to suck up to the producers); (3) and now how he is being nice to Wendy after Wendy screwed everyone on the show. Not to mention he did anything the producers asked in his designs instead of standing up to his personal vision like Austin and Mario did. At this point, I'm rooting for Kara Saun. I like both her personality and her style best (out of the pretty arbitrary final 3 chosen by Project Runway judges...).

The 3 do some make-up fittings with their models and a L'Oreal make-up consultant. Wendy realizes she forgot about shoes...and accessories... One of Jay's models says he looks like Buddha.

Then, another huge blunder on the part of the Project Runway producers - Tim Gunn. First off, yes, I do hate his character. No, it doesn't help that he is the one man on earth that likes Wendy. Or that when Banana Republic decided to manufacture the design of one of the contestants, he said that that was "less likely than all of you being struck by lightning." That phrase really stuck with me - how utterly condescending of him to say that..! Not to mention it's not true, of course. He seems (is) the type of person that, when he becomes successful and in a position of power, uses that position of power to make scathing remarks and belittle people's designs rather than act as a supportive mentor.

In any case, in this case Tim Gunn says that Kara Saun's shoes were illegal. Why? Because (through good and successful efforts) she was able to secure shoes for free. But nothing free or done as a favor is allowed on the show. Where did Wendy (who, as we remember, initially forgot about shoes altogether...) and Jay get some of their shoes from? From Michael Kors, *for free*. But somehow, those free shoes are within the rules, but Kara Saun's are not. Kara Saun points out the logical fallacy in Tim Gunn's argument, but unfortunately yet unsurprisingly, Tim Gunn doesn't respond to the logic. Aggravating to watch.

The 3 go to the runway show. Wendy sees Johnny Hardesty, and says "I need to be like him." Nah, no chance - he's hot; you're not. Throughout the show, Wendy has been especially painful to watch because of how unattractive she is. She's overweight, with disheveled hair, and atrocious make-up. You'd think she would've learned from being around Austin and the like for 24/7, but nah, she didn't.

OK, now, to the real beef of the show - the collections!

1. Kara Saun I don't like pastel brown/greens, so I wasn't the hugest fan. I did think all of the items fit in well, though, and liked how they seemed to alternate between fall and spring items. Loved the green dress design with the original cut-outs and the white jacket with brown fur and loop belt.

2. Wendy Pepper Wendy has good soulful sad French music going on, and some decent pieces in her collection (green dress with fur was OK, as was the magenta one and the last one in her collection). At the end, Wendy did what she always does - used her daughter. Took her up in her arms and walked with her to redeem herself and look cuter (I mean, pretty much any little girl looks innocent and nice). Which brings me to - where's the dad, Wendy's husband? Oh, left her? Makes sense, who wouldn't.

3. Jay Loved the green cutout jacket with model that looked more like a rocker dude. Actually, I liked pretty much every outfit except for the first one with the ugly yellow puffy construction-worker-type jacket. Have to admit, his headphone and glazed make-up ideas were stellar, too. So yes, I liked his collection the best. By far. I do like Kara Saun's personality and character more, but this time Jay had the better collection.

Everyone loves to hate Wendy for having some ridiculous plan to somehow undermine the designers and get ahead in the competition despite the fact that the judges were third parties who were looking at designs and execution rather than congeniality and mental states. In this episode, however, the true villain turns out to be everyone's darling, Kara.

Kara tries to cheat, gets caught and called out, then throws a Diva tantrum trying to justify her actions. Her attitude reeks of entitlement as she seems to think that because she has "good taste" she should be allowed to break the rules the other two finalists obeyed.

The producers gave her a VERY generous option to resolve her actions, but it is pretty obvious that her attempt to break the rules cost her the win as the producers had a role in selecting the winner, and having a cheater be champion would not have looked right for the show. Sadly, she really did have the most elegant collection.
