Junk man's crude turns to crud
kevinolzak22 November 2016
"California Crude" opens with Fred determined to plant a vegetable garden, resulting in Lamont doing all the work. While his son takes a break inside the house, Fred receives a visit from Professor Leonard Miller (Patrick Campbell), a noted archaeologist who specializes in rock formations: "maybe you can tell me how Gladys Knight found her Pips?" The learned professor designates the junkyard as the location of a hidden cache of oil. The disbelieving junk dealer sells him an 'antique' shovel which he claims was used by Hannibal to cross the alps: "did you ever march behind 200 elephants without a shovel?" Even Lamont doesn't buy the incredible story, until an Esther-faced scarecrow strikes black crude. Ross Martin (THE WILD, WILD WEST) guest stars as Abdullah Aram, the Arab assessor who calculates the strike to be genuine, worth millions - Fred: "what do rich people enjoy more than anything else?" Lamont "poor people!"
