Hal Williams makes his final appearance as Officer Smitty
kevinolzak3 December 2016
"Here Today, Gone Today" has the gang ready to celebrate Fred's 40th year in the junk business, luring him out of the house so they can kidnap his furniture for a reupholstering job (the movie title is "The Incredible Shrinking Fungus"). Fred believes the thieves were a bunch of weirdos: "who else would steal Esther's picture? They must have been desperate!" Esther is pleased that all his useless furniture is gone: "what are YOU still doing here? Good riddance to bad rubbish!" "into each life some ugly must fall!" What no one was counting on was for Fred to collect the insurance on his stolen property! Marlene Clark makes her fifth of six appearances as Lamont's fiancée Janet Lawson, while Hal Williams' Officer Smitty exits the series after 20 episodes since season one.

Warning: Spoilers
Fred and Lamont go out to see a movie ("The Incredible Shrinking Fungus") and while they were gone their furniture was all taken. Fred confronts Rollo, who claims he was at the same movie but saw it twice due to a big guy disrupting it for him. Also, their police officer friends, Smitty and Hoppy come to have Lamont identify the furniture among recovered items. While he's gone, however, Fred calls his insurance company, and after going around a bit trying to get a bigger settlement, gets enough money to buy all new furniture for the place. When Lamont comes in and sees what happened, he confesses the taking of his furniture was a setup to have it reupholstered for his anniversary. Fred decides he likes the new furniture too much to get rid of it, but Lamont changes Fred's mind real quick when he explains that he could go to jail for insurance fraud. In another twist, after loading the new furniture in the truck, it all gets stolen along with the truck. That turns out to be Rollo, who took the truck to have it redesigned with a new logo, new tires and hubcaps, and a new CB radio, plus he also sold the furniture to a relative for a price the insurance agent accepts due to the claim being an honest mistake. Crazy day, but it all works out in the end for Fred's anniversary.
