Simply wonderful

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best episode of season 3. The visual and verbal gags are hilarious, especially in the first 10 minutes - I laughed until I cried ("Open sewers....for the next 40 miles", "Political? Oooowh", and all the scenes of Homer parking and Homer at the cinema). The main "plot" is really a retread of previously visited themes (like in "Homer's Night Out"), about how Homer may be occasionally tempted by other women but will always stay faithful to Marge, but Beverly D'Angelo creates one of the most memorable temptresses, and her singing is wonderful. Even those who don't care for country music will probably like this episode. *** out of 4.

Yeehaw! The Simpsons make country music bearable
gizmomogwai27 April 2009
Colonel Homer is one of the rare episodes with the writing credited to creator Matt Groening, and it's one of the three infidelity episodes of the classic years. The first, season 1's Life on the Fast Lane which has Marge tempted, is still my favourite. But this second one, which has Homer almost becoming unfaithful, is good too. We saw Homer tempted again in season 5, although I guess that episode can be distinguished from this one in that in season 5 Homer is more seriously tempted, and there Marge is oblivious while in Colonel Homer, she's suspicious and jealous.

But the big thing distinguishing the two episodes in which Homer is tested is that Colonel Homer has a country music and hillbillies theme, which makes this episode more colourful. The episode succeeds despite the fact that I normally don't like country music (with some exceptions- I think Garth Brooks isn't bad, and I love that Convoy song and the one where the devil goes down to Georgia). The music here is all right, and that song about bagging a Homer is particularly catchy. Beverly D'Angelo is good as Homer's love interest, Lurleen. And, Marge is naked in bed at the end- that's always sexy. But the icing on the cake may be the part where the hillbillies talk about being bitter after one catches his wife in bed with another man. This isn't my favourite season 3 episode, but it's well worth seeing.

Country-Themed Simpsons!
g-bodyl21 August 2014
This is the twentieth episode of the third season of the Simpsons and like the last few episodes, it's not the greatest episode but very entertaining. I like to listen to country music from time to time, so this episode is a little up my alley. But I thought the new character, Lurleen Lumpkin is great and her country songs are catchy. I mean after all, she bagged a Homer.

This episode, "Colonel Homer," is about how Homer gets angry at Marge after she embarrasses him at the movie theater so he leaves the house. He goes to the bar where he meets the local waitress named Lurleen Lumpkin and they begin to hit it off after he hears her sing. Lurleen makes Homer her manager and Marge begins to suspect they may be having an affair.

Overall, I always would like myself a country-themed episode and here we got a good one. It's about a man who finds his values, despite his low I.Q. The songs are great and catchy and thus another good episode. I rate this episode 9/10.

Classic- One of the best episodes of television ever.

Warning: Spoilers
***INCLUDES MILD SPOILERS***

I've watched this episode many times, but it's been a few years. After FXX's marathon happened it got me back into the show, but I missed this one during the 12 day bonanza. So I fired up the old DVD and put on this episode.

It's better than I remembered. This is quite possibly one of the most perfect episodes of television ever created.

It's perfectly paced, the gags are great, the story is honest and emotional and all the characters involve truly shine here.

After embarrassing himself and Marge at a movie which results in Marge yelling at him, Homer drops the family off at home and happens upon a country bar. He meets Lurleen Lumpkin, a waitress who sings a song that truly speaks to him.

He winds up becoming her manager and what ensues is temptation and potential infidelity on Homer's part.

The Simpsons has always done a brilliant job with this subject and approaches these situations very carefully with a lot of heart and real humanity with characters struggling to understand how they really feel. It's very easy to identify with the three characters who are at the forefront of the episode.

You understand why Lurleen is attracted to Homer, and it feels legitimate and earned. You understand why Homer is torn between Lurleen and what seems like fading feelings for Marge. You understand Marge's heartbreak and Julie Kavner nails her performance of a wife afraid of losing her husband.

It's heavy subject material, but the episode isn't without its moments of levity which play as well as any gag in the history of the show.

One scene in particular in which Lurleen expresses her true feelings for Homer is captured perfectly with brilliant shot selection and an absolutely moving score by Alf Clausen, an arrangement that accompanies Lurleen's song, "Bunk with me Tonight".

This episode is the epitome of what makes the Simpsons, the Simpsons. With top tier writing, acting, animation and direction it may possibly supersede every episode that came before it or after it in the show's overblown lexicon of episodes.

The Colonel
safenoe26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Beverly D'Angelo is the voice of Lurleen Lumpkin in this golden era episode of The Simpsons. I can't believe it's taken me this long to post a user review for Colonel Homer considering I watched it in 1992, and I was moved to do so after today watching Papa Don't Leech, which debuted 16 years after Colonel Homer. Beverly D'Angelo's voice hasn't aged at all over the 16 years.

Anyway, Lurleen has the hots for Homer, and Homer is quite oblivious to this, although Marge isn't at all. This is the classic Simpsons episode with an overarching storyline and numerous one-liners and pay-offs from the golden era.

Good, but Old Hat
Hitchcoc24 April 2022
After Homer ruins a movie for an entire audience, Marge tells him to shut up. He is offended and hits the road, looking for a steak house. Instead he winds up in a country bar where a waitress is quite a singer. Homer is so clueless it's a wonder he can tie his shoes. Anyway, his help gets her into show business. And guess who gets nothing out of it.
