As Betty nears the end of her pregnancy, Frank is on edge. He has managed to annoy the staff of the local hospital by rushing her there every time he suspects she is about to give birth. During his most recent visit, he angers the head surgeon ( Richard Caldicot ) by blocking his reserved parking space.
The big day finally arrives, and Frank goes into overdrive...
The final episode of the second season sees Frank defy all odds by becoming a success - namely by being a father. There would be no further series until 1978, though two Christmas specials would be screened over the next two years. Next to the American series 'Star Trek', 'Some Mothers' was probably the most frequently repeated series on '70's British television. Hardly a week went by without an episode popping up somewhere in the schedules.
Frank asks Dr.Smedley ( Anthony Woodruff ) his first name ( in case the child turns out to be male ). It is Horatio. Betty is not keen on it and who can blame her? Nice moment with Father O'Hara ( Cyril Luckham ) with the cleric telling Frank not to bring his shopping into church any more. The last time he did this he brought fish with him and stunk out the confessional booth.
The late Diane Holland - the receptionist - was snooty 'Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves' in 'Hi-De-Hi', while John D.Collins, the doctor, managed to land himself the most thankless acting job on television, one of the two idiot British airmen who said "Hello!" once a week on 'Allo, Allo'. I hope he fired his agent.
Funniest moment - for reasons best known to herself, Betty wants Frank present at the birth. "Its a boy! Its a boy!", he cries excitedly. The head surgeon says: "Mr.Spencer, that is a girl!". Pointing, Frank asks: "What's that then?". The umbilical cord, as it turns out.
