Elaine's Party
ccthemovieman-118 February 2010
The first four episodes of this new (back in 1978) were fantastic so the odds were that sooner-or-later a so-so story would materialize. This one was it; okay, but nothing that great.

There really isn't much to this story except that it features Marilu Henner, who was pretty stunning to ogle and is a regular in this cast, as the only female cabbie: "Elaine Nardo." Dressed up for her party, Marilu really looked especially terrific.

Elaine, as viewers of this series know, held down two jobs: the cabbie and as a secretary (and window designer) at an art museum. Like Bobby and his acting dreams, Elaine's heart is in art a lot more than her cab job. Thus, she's really nervous about making a good impression to the art crowd when she hosts a party.

All I'll say is several things happen at the party that one wouldn't predict would happen, which keeps it interesting. Included in the list of surprises is a connection with an incident shown early on in this episode involving a nasty customer in Elaine's cab.

Elaine throws a party but doesn't want guests to know she drives a cab.

Warning: Spoilers
I am currently re-watching all the old Taxi episodes on DVD. This is one of my very favorite TV series of all time. Very interesting characters and situations.

The episode begins as Marilu Henner as cabbie Elaine is picking up a fare on a dark and rainy night. He wants to go to the art museum and as Elaine starts going, he accuses her of trying to take a longer route to get a bigger fare. A big argument ensues, Elaine puts him out in the rain, but that's no problem, she will never see him again ... or will she?

Elaine works during the day as a receptionist at an art gallery, but hides the fact that she moonlights as a cabbie. She doesn't think it would go well with the art crowd she wants to impress. She throws a party at her place, and wants Alex to be there, but insists that no one know they work as cab drivers. Humor is added when several of the other cabbies decide to attend also.

Judd Hirsch is Alex Reiger, Danny DeVito is Louie De Palma, Tony Danza is Tony Banta, and Andy Kaufman is Latka Gravas.

The party is going well, until the man from the argument the rainy night shows us as one of the guests. Elaine was naturally afraid but when he failed to recognize her that got her really mad, and things changed from there. Eventually for the better.

SPOILERS: As things developed Elaine went face to face with the man, identified herself as the cab driver, Alex also.
