Florence the hamster
kevinolzak29 June 2016
"Dr. Epstein, I Presume" opens with the Sweathogs reading compositions on what they want to be, with Juan bringing his sick hamster Florence to school. With hamsters, mice, a chicken, and a turtle, Epstein is quite the animal lover, so Kotter suggests that he pursue a career as a veterinarian. Guidance counselor Miss Helms (Laura Zucker) dampens his enthusiasm with her computer assessment that he's only capable of manual labor. It's touching to watch Juan say goodbye to his pets after leaving them with the Kotters, making a face for Harpo (the real Harpo would be proud), and saying "good night, John Boy!" Once Gabe learns that Florence is pregnant, everybody's off to school for the delivery. A rather awkward performance from Laura Zucker, not surprising since this was her only acting role, being the show's dialogue coach.
