"Sweatgate Scandal" is the series takeoff on the recent feature film "All the President's Men." School paper the Buchanan Bugle blares devastating headlines that seemingly are intended to annoy the Sweathogs. What really angers them is being accused of a break-in at Principal Lazarus' office. Kotter believes that getting a Sweathog involved with the Bugle will promote a better image for the guys, though Judy Borden (Helaine Lembeck) and Todd Ludlow (Dennis Bowen) aren't exactly pleased to have additional help. Their first assignment is to uncover the theft of 40 pounds of raw liver from the cafeteria. An attempt to investigate the Lazarus break-in is promptly rejected by the Principal himself, but a mysterious stranger who identifies himself only as 'Deep Throat' serves as secret informant: "follow the liver!" Probably the second season's lowest point, but Epstein would be back on the Bugle as a muckraking reporter in "Sweat Smell of Success." Helaine Lembeck's Judy Borden (in her 10th appearance) would be back in three more episodes, but this was the fifth and final entry for Dennis Bowen's Todd Ludlow.
