Yancy Derringer (actor Jock Mahoney), a suave sophisticated gambler and ladies man in post-Civil War New Orleans, comes across a robbery of a business shipment. Business owner Matthew Younger (actor Mark Roberts) wrongly denounces Yancy as one of the robbers and has him arrested. Yancy is released due to the intercession of John Colton (actor Kevin Hagen), city administrator of New Orleans, for whom Yancy clandestinely works as a secret agent.
The next day at a sidewalk café, Yancy happens upon Desiree LaChapelle (actress Kathleen Crowley), ward of Younger, a rich, beautiful young woman whom Yancy had known as a skinny teen. Grave robbers have stolen a treasured watch from her father's grave and, over Younger's objections to Yancy's questionable social status, she calls upon Yancy to try to find it. Desiree has also inherited her father's insurance company, which has been hit hard by the recent spate of hijackings of business shipments.
Aided by Pahoo (actor X Brands), his silent but fiercely loyal Indian companion, Yancy travels through the high and low ends of society to try to put things right for Desiree. Yancy overcomes two assassination attempts and a host of other difficulties, and solves all of Desiree's problems. Attracted to Yancy and grateful for his help, Desiree sweeps away Yancy for a romantic interlude, to the amusement of Madame Francine (actress Frances Bergen), owner of an entertainment establishment and old friend of Yancy.
