VH1 Storytellers: Bruce Springsteen (2005)

This episode of the popular television series has legendary singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen taking the stage and delivering an acoustic performance, which includes eight songs as well as him discussing the stories behind them.

Devils & Dust, Blinded by the Light, Brilliant Disguise, Nebraska, Jesus Was an Only Son, Waiting' on a Sunny Day, The Rising and Thunder Road are the songs performed and they're a pretty good selection. I'm not really sure if the casual Springsteen fan would enjoy this but those die-hards who worship the man will certainly dig the presentation of the songs (acoustic guitar or piano) as well as the stories that come with them.

He opens the set up with Devils & Dust and talks about why the Iraq War played such an important part with the song. He then goes back to Blinded by the Light and discussing how he was trying to write a hit and what changes the original version made. From here we get a duet with Patti Scialfa where he discusses everything from strip joints to not winning fights with his wife. The influence of BADLANDS plays a part on Nebraska and he discusses writing pop music with Waiting' on a Sunny Day. Thunder Road closes out the show with Springsteen explaining what he was trying to do with it.

If you're a fan of Springsteen then you'll obviously enjoy the eight songs here as they're all performed quite well. There's no question that the highlight is Thunder Road and the message behind it. The stories are all certainly interesting and the songwriter goes through them, basically line by line, explaining what he was going for.
