Wam, bam, we're in a jam!

Warning: Spoilers
Catchy phrase for Stanley Chan.

Who stole the crown jewels from the museum?

Keye Luke stands as the first oriental performer to portray Charlie Chan, and Robert Ito would go on to appear on Quincy. Ito did the voice of eldest son Henry.

In this episode, Henry and Stanley do a good comedy duo bit. Over-zealous detective son Flip was always outstanding too. Right from the start I was never sure if the pet, Chu Chu, was supposed to be a dog or a cat, as the youngest daughter told the museum guy it was a cat when he said no dogs allowed.

The clichés on the kids (one obese, one bossy, one tomboy, one beautiful, one brain and so on) were solid, but very little ever came of their characterizations in the time allotted.

Still, a cartoon about such characters in the early seventies is definitely ground-breaking.

Listen for the Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre sound-alikes as well.

This story appeared in the first comic book adaptation from Gold Key in 1972, cover priced fifteen cents.

Different but not enough of Charlie

I watched 3 of these episodes. The animated image of Charlie Chan is really good. It could be Sydney Toler or any one of the Charlies.

The imagery is good and the way the family van changes into many kinds of vehicles is creative with the animation.

What I did not like was that Charlie Chan is not in to many of the scenes. His kids do all the detective work. The boys think they know who did this and who did that and they end up in trouble. There also is a dog that looks like a cat. There is some humor and the animation is funny.

I wish they would have stayed with the original Chan movies were Charlie was the star and the detective.

This series was produced by Hanna Barbara the producer of Scooby Doo. In the first few episodes I watched there was a song in the background. In the Crown Jewel Caper 3 minutes and 21 seconds into the video the theme song for Scooby Doo is playing in the background. Now I really love the old Scooby Doo series, not the Mystery Incorporated series so I was even more disappointed Scooby's song was used.

So I have more to view and maybe the series will improve.
