Good but it could have been so much better.

This episode of "The Paper Chase" was pretty good but it suffered on two accounts. First, it really didn't fit the rest of the series in style. Second, it shoved way too much into the show and the plot SHOULD have lasted several episodes.

The first problem is that the show was still brand-new. Yet, Hart begins dating a girl from a family that turns out to be involved with organized crime!! This does NOT fit the show at all and is such a strange diversion that you wonder what the writer might have been thinking. It was like the show was jumping the shark--and only after the fifth episode (not counting the pilot).

Let me explain about the second problem. The show begins with Hart VERY seriously dating a pretty law student named Nancy (Elyssa Davalos). This was odd since we'd never seen her in any other episode. It was hard to believe that the two were beginning to think about marriage when you'd never even seen them together until this particular show! Had they met a few episodes earlier and THEN this episode occurred, it would have made much more sense and packed a bigger emotional punch.

So is the show worth seeing? Of course. Even a second-rate episode of this show is better than 90% of the stuff out there. Plus, the episode tended to show Professor Kingsfield as a bit kinder than he'd been portrayed before in the program--which is good, as almost no one is THAT nasty down deep!
