This animated short is a timely warning, especially for anyone . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . who plans on traveling to the country of France (or probably anywhere in the so-called European Union) in the foreseeable future, or people who may be considering the purchase of foreign food products that get Snuck into America prior to the new regime of Protective Tariffs and Extreme Vetting. LE GENIE DE LA BOITRE DE RAVIOLIS reveals that the French do NOT subject their canned goods to the same level of absolute scrutiny which American Cans enjoy. This is not only evident from the slipshod procedures documented here inside the ravioli canning factory in the early going, but also by the sorry result ensuing when an unsuspecting customer (or maybe NOT so innocent, seeing as how this consumer actually works on the ravioli assembly line!) opens his contaminated product. It turns out that this apparent European favorite is tainted with a powerful hallucinogen (most likely botulism). Before he expires, this unwary customer imagines all sorts of weird stuff coming out of the defective container and interacting with him. How sad! Let this be a warning to you NOT to buy any dented cans, ESPECIALLY if they originated overseas!!

A small film that lasts 8 minutes

Warning: Spoilers
A very long time ago, I watched this on a French school trip, and I was touched to say the least. With such a budget and a small running time, this movie manages to have very decent animation, as well as a very nice song at the end. I very much enjoyed it, despite it being in a different language. It even has a small amount of good humour! The only downside is how short it is, and in my opinion, the story wasn't completely resolved at the end. I still love it though.

Delightful Swiss stop-motion animated shortie

"Le génie de la boîte de raviolis" (2006 release from Switzerland; 8 min.) is a stop-motion animated movie. As the movie opens, we see a guy working in a factory that makes canned raviolis. When ht gets home from his work shift and opens his pantry to fix dinner, we notice he has nothing but ravioli cans. He opens one and magically a genie pops out, telling him he can get two wishes come true. The guy now has to decide which two wishes...

This is nothing short of a delightful stop-motion movie, and it is amazing how much is covered in just 8 minutes. Of course at the end of those 8 min., I only wished it lasted longer. I recently saw this in the theater as the opening movie for another delightful (and Oscar-nominated) stop-motion animated movie from Switzerland, "My Life As a Zucchini".

If you have the opportunity to see "The Genius In the Can of Raviolis", do not miss it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Not an original story

I had a children's book when I was a kid. I don't remember the name unfortunately; there was a woman who owned a restaurant, but only served canned spaghetti and the food was awful. One day the can she chooses from her pantry -- filled exclusively with canned spaghetti -- contains a genie. This book was published likely in the 70's, based on the art style. If anyone remembers this book I would love to know it!
